One hundred and fifty-four years ago, the nation was electrified by the news out of Mississippi: after a long siege, the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, commanding the heights of the mighty river, had fallen to Ulysses S. Grant. Coming the day after the federal victory at Gettsyburg, it turned the tide of the Civil War and preserved the union for Mr. Lincoln. It was a national birthday present like none other. Gettysburg gets most of the attention, as well it should: the three-day struggle between North and South in a small Pennsylvania town was the greatest battle ever fought on the American continent: bloody,

It is ironic, but somehow fitting, that the illness of one of the worst men in American political life should be the thing that might save the Republican Party from the ineptitude of its leadership and its own cowardly instincts. I´m referring, of course, to John McCain, a man who´s been in the public eye since his Vietnam captivity in the 1960s and has contributed exactly nothing since to the country he professes to serve.

The Times ‘exposé’ on Donald Trump Jr.

The news was delivered by the New York Times in the breathless tones that might announce a cure for cancer or the discovery of life on Mars: “President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.” To which a rational response is … who wouldn’t? And also: so, what? A third response is unprintable.

Comey’s testimony proves he’s the biggest loser

If you want a visible symbol of all that’s wrong with Washington these days, look no further than the 6-foot-8-inch frame of James B. Comey Jr., whose DC circus act finally closed on Thursday with an unctuous performance before the Senate intelligence committee. Seeking to take down the president of the United States for unceremoniously firing him, the former FBI director succeeded primarily in embarrassing himself and the bureau. Call him the Biggest Loser. But Comey’s not alone.

These Obama cronies should be grilled

It was a busy week. But squeezed among Kathy Griffin’s career self-decapitation, President Trump’s Paris climate-accord pullout and the media’s anticipation of James Comey’s upcoming testimony, the really important news got crowded out: the weaponizing of the intelligence agencies against the Obama administration’s political enemies. As part of its investigation into the alleged Russian hacking of the 2016 election, Republicans on the House intelligence committee have subpoenaed records from former CIA Director John Brennan, National Security Adviser Susan Rice and UN Ambassador Samantha Power regarding a different issue: the promiscuous “unmasking” of the names of American citizens in widely disseminated (and

Comey’s Firing is a Gift to the FBI

Let’s cut right to the chase: James Comey should have been fired immediately following his disastrous press briefing last July, in which he candidly laid out the case against Hillary Clinton over her mishandling of classified information and then refused to recommend charges. Overstepping his authority while radiating sanctimony, arrogating power while clumsily intervening in the election, Comey deserved to be sacked on the spot.

Miami, a city of 430,000 people, could disappear within the century if the worst climate change predictions come true. New York Magazine´s David Wallace-Wells spoke with dozens of climatologists and researchers in related fields for an investigation on the outcomes of climate change if aggressive preventative action isn´t taken. The results were not pretty. (Snip) Within the century, a combination of polar melting, carbon emissions, and ice-sheet collapses could cause chronic flooding to wipe out Miami — and as many as 670 coastal communities, including Cambridge, Massachusetts; Oakland, California; St. Petersburg, Florida; and four of the five boroughs of New York City, according

Susan Rice will no longer be appearing in front of the House committee on Tuesday to answer questions about her unmasking of Trump and his private associates. Rice was expected to give a testimony to the House committee probing her unmasking scandal. It has apparently been postponed. (Snip) As TGP previously reported, independent journalist, Mike Cernovich broke the Susan Rice unmasking story in early April. Cernovich reported via Medium: The White House Counsel’s office identified Rice as the person responsible for the unmasking after examining Rice’s document log requests. The reports Rice requested to see are kept under tightly-controlled conditions.

Since Hillary Clinton’s unexpected loss to Donald Trump, her donors have strategized with Democratic leadership about how to revive the failing party. Billionaire George Soros held a closed door conference with wealthy donors in November 2016 that addressed how to “take back power” and was attended by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. On the weekend of Trump’s inauguration, David Brock hosted a retreat for the most prolific Democratic donors to figure out how to “kick Donald Trump’s a--.” On July 15, Page Six reported that Sen. Kamala Harris, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, met with top Clinton donors in the Hamptons. Many figures in Clinton’s inner circle attended, including Clinton’s

The mainstream media’s silence over Klaus Eberwein’s death is deafening. Eberwein was a former Haitian government official who was expected to expose the extent of Clinton Foundation corruption and malpractice next week. He has been found dead in Miami at the age of 50. The circumstances surrounding Eberwein’s death are also nothing less than unpalatable. According to Miami-Dade’s medical examiner records supervisor, the official cause of death is “gunshot to the head.“ Eberwein’s death has been registered as “suicide” by the government. But not long before his death, he acknowledged that his life was in danger because he was outspoken on

Sens. Mike Lee and Jerry Moran jointly announced Monday night that they will oppose a vote to open debate on the Senate GOP´s healthcare bill, meaning Republicans currently do not have the votes to advance the legislation in its current form. Lee, R-Utah, and Moran, R-Kan., announced their opposition to the bill in tweets in which they cited one another, but they issued separate statements. With Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, already coming out against advancing the healthcare bill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., no longer has the votes he needs to have least 50 of 52

Subway wants to freshen up the look of its stores as it tries to stem a sales decline. The sandwich chain says the redesign - which includes a brighter atmosphere, displays of vegetables behind the counter and ordering tablets - is the first major revamp since the early 2000s. The changes will take place as stores around the country are remodeled and new ones are built. The makeover comes as Subway´s sales have fallen for four straight years amid competition from places including Jimmy John´s and Firehouse Subs. Since 2012, Subway´s average annual sales per store are down 13 percent

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) has been accused of “slut-shaming” female players after introducing a new dress code that forbids plunging necklines, leggings or revealing skirts on the course. Reactions to the move by golf’s governing body have been overwhelmingly against it, with Teen Vogue, the influential youth magazine, saying the dress code had set women “way back”. In an email sent around by LPGA player president Vicki Goetze-Ackerman on July 2, players were warned that they would face a fine of $1000 if they breached the new dress code which comes into action on July 17.

Dunkirk is a great movie but there aren’t enough ‘women’ or ‘people of color’ in it, according to a review in USA Today. The movie – with a cast including Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and former One Direction singer Harry Styles – has been given a slew of five-star reviews for its vivid, nailbiting depiction of the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk in 1940. But though USA Today’s reviewer praised it too, he couldn’t resist giving it a little rap on the knuckles about its shameful lack of diversity and equality: The trio of timelines can be jarring as you

Pensions: Even in normal years, the annual Social Security and Medicare trustees´ reports typically get overlooked. This year is far from normal. But the reports should be top of mind for anyone who cares about retirement security. The Social Security report finds that the "trust fund" will run out of money in just 17 years. The news only gets worse from there. The program´s unfunded liability over the next 75 years is now $12.5 trillion, which is up from $11.4 trillion last year and $4.7 trillion a decade ago. In other words, Social Security´s long-term unfunded liability has increased by 166% in

Former Vice President Al Gore condemned President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement in an interview Monday. “We’ve never had a president who´s deliberately made decisions the effect of which is tearing down America’s standing in the world,” Gore said on the "Today" show. The one-time Democratic presidential nominee also attacked Trump for “undermining our alliances” and damaging America’s reputation in “many ways.” Gore–who has spent most of his post-political career as a climate change activist–has occasionally weighed in on the president’s decisions. If any doubts remained that the Fox News channel is continuing to swerve from its conservative roots, they were erased on July 16, 2017 when Ezekiel Emanuel, M.D., a principal architect of Obamacare and a barely hinged spin doctor for the Democrat socialist left, appeared on the channel’s signature weekly program Fox News Sunday in his new role as a paid contributor. During the program, the ever arrogant Emanuel jumped on the Resist Trump bandwagon and suggested that President Trump is worthy of being impeached. The mob occurred in Philadelphia´s Germantown neighborhood on Sunday night, outside the city-run Lonnie Young Recreation Center. Police said that the incident began at around 9.30pm, when officers arrived to find the center´s sidewalks and street filled with teenagers, believed to be age 12 to 17. (Snip) Videos posted on Facebook and taken by cookout attendees showed that teens also climbed on top of cars and blocked siren-blaring cop cruisers by taunting and dancing in front of them.
