USS Fitzgerald completely ignored Japanese
cargo ship before deadly collision as crew

A U.S. warship struck by a container vessel in Japanese waters failed to respond to warning signals or take evasive action before a collision that killed seven of its crew, according to a report of the incident by the Philippine cargo ship´s captain. Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way into how the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal container ship collided in clear weather south of Tokyo Bay in the early hours of June 17. In the first detailed account from one of those directly involved, the cargo ship´s captain said the ACX Crystal had

I´m no expert, but everything points to an egregious error made by whoever was navigating the smaller and much-more-nimble Fitzgerald. Even if the cargo ship had targeted the destroyer, the destroyer could´ve evaded a crash, as long as the skipper was paying attention.

Now I had read earlier that the Crystal was on autopilot and nobody was on the bridge. That gives lie to this story. WHICH IS IT?

"In his report, the ACX Crystal´s captain said there was ´confusion´ on his ship´s bridge, and that it turned around and returned to the collision site after continuing for 6 nautical miles."

The container ship´s captain is lying. How could his ship sound horn and flash lights yet there was confusion on bridge? And, how did his vessel travel another 6 miles after collision? A captain on bridge would have stopped immediately if he had been signaling the destroyer before the crash? Would guess that no one was at the helml of either ship that night and that the Fitzgerald´s crew was AWOL from duty stations.

THe alleged path of the container ship seems to show that it turned around to head for the destroyer. Of course the time line is unknown and it could be that the captain did turn around after the collision.

During his eight years in office, Obama fired or retired many battle-ready admirals and generals. To fill their open positions, he promoted politically-oriented officers who would tell him what he wanted to hear and bow before his superior knowledge of international affairs, much like Kim Jung Un.

#5 I believe the u turn happened between 12:58 a.m. and 2:46 a.m., after the collision.

Where were the sailors who were supposed to be standing watch, port, starboard and aft? Where were the sailors who were supposed to be watching the radar?

There is speculation that the systems of one or the other or both vessels were hacked and somehow disabled or impaired to allow the collision to happen.

Even if the cargo ship intentionally rammed the USS Fitzgerald, it is the duty of our ships NOT to be rammed. This makes me so sad - the loss of life, the loss of careers, the loss of confidence in our Navy to protect our country.

Previous story is "nobody on bridge, everybody asleep, ship on autopilot".
Now, "desperate, heroic efforts to avoid collision".

The stink of lying is palpable. I believe NOTHING about the claims of what the Crystal crew did at this point.

OTOH, how does a competent, aware USN bridge team get hit by a tanker? Answer, they don´t

I am reserving final judgement until we have some solid facts, but in almost all possible scenarios it appears as if the captain´s career is justifiably over.

Again, my former aircraft carrier captain friend told me he was NEVER off of the bridge in any congested waterway. And yes, he lost a LOT of sleep that way. When not in congested waters, he was in the sea cabin just adjacent to the bridge. Any ship closer than some defined range, 10 miles IIRC, orders were to get him on the bridge BEFORE the other ship broke the 10 mile ring.

He kept his ship and men safe, and retired honorably years later.

No way! So, if the container vessel took evasive action 10 mininutes before the collision and T-boned them anyway, they would´ve missed them by a mile if they had stayed the course. This explanation is simply not logical.

Nope. I am not buying that story. First, we heard the ACX Crystal was moving on a radical, out of control course at full speed with all running lights out in pitch darkness. That he had no idea they had even collided with another ship, and now, the ACX Crystal was doing all it could to warn other ships- BS! And, this story is only the excuse riddled lamentation of a skipper of a commercial vessel trying to shift his portion of responsibility.

I´ll wait, though, for better future information. This bit makes no sense, at all.

Regardless of any of the stories/reports on this situation, this is an Aegis class destroyer with advanced radar, capable of 30 knots and the ability to stop in 2 ship lengths. Everything and everyone not tied down would hit the bulkheads but the ship would come to a stop. That the totality of the crew, either on the bridge or in the combat information center, weren´t aware of and monitoring all ships within either a 5,000 or 10,000 yard range and were unprepared to take evasive action is inexcusable. This is the equivalent of a Ferrari getting hit in the side by horse-drawn farm cart.

The ACX Crystal Captain´s account of the collision makes no sense!

Does "failed to respond" on the part of Fitzgerald mean she maintained a constant course and speed? If Fitzgerald was crossing the path of ACX Crystal and Crystal´s evasive action (hard right turn) preceded a collision by 10 minutes, Fitzgerald would have passed well clear had Crystal maintained its original course and speed.
It was a hard right turn by Crystal that resulted in a CBDR situation (constant bearing, decreasing range, which means an action must be taken to avoid a collision).

Although admittedly slow to maneuver, a hard right turn started 10 minutes before the time of collision should have allowed Crystal to complete a turn away from a ship crossing her bow.

I´m not defending the actions of Fitzgerald (which we do not know), but this story makes no sense.

I find it astonishing that a US Naval vessel could have been hit like this. The Captain is responsible for his ship and the outcome reflects his leadership. Even if he was "off duty" a responsible Captain would have had standing orders to call him at any time.

It sounds like the Fitzgerald was deaf, dumb, and blind. There should have been many redundant watches at all times but no one appeared to have been watching at all. There is NO excuse for it and NO excuse for a collision.

What the cargo ship did or didn´t do is an interesting piece but the responsibility for the collision rests with the Fitzgerald and her Captain.

I said it earlier, and it seems worth repeating that the responsibility for the collision can be laid at the feet of Affirm-A or some other Dimmi "value."

I cannot see how a lumbering, laden container ship could ever hunt down, outmanuever and hit any naval combat vessel.

Hitting a lumbering, laden container ship is like hitting the Lighthouse:

US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

#17, you do not understand that it makes literally ZERO difference which officer on the bridge made the error - it is the captain´s fault, 100%. His choice to not be present and trust his officers.

The captain trained them all, the captain judged their abilities and temperments under stress and he decided that he could sleep.

It is fairly certain that the captain made a serious error in training, and judgement. HIS FAULT.

It has always been that way, and has to be that way. The captain of a USN ship is give huge leeway, and is given huge responsiblity. Most do well. A few fail the test, most by running their ship aground. Back in the old days, these guys were given command of a Naval Base. Nobody every ran one of them into anything. And realistically, they command very little, can cause little damage as they wait their few years to retirement. Not sure what current practice is for cashiered captains, my info is decades out of date.

Barring some unusual revelation in events, which is still possible, and I hope for, because USN captains are normally very good men, this captain´s career is toast.

In Federalist No. 68, his pseudonymous essay on “The Mode of Electing the President,” Alexander Hamilton wrote that the Electoral College could shield the United States “from the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.” (Snip) Hamilton and his colleagues never could have envisioned a year like 2016, when an enemy state—Russia—was able to manipulate America’s election process with stunning effectiveness. But it’s clear the national security rationale for the Electoral College is outdated and therefore it should be retired. Simply put, it enables foreign powers to more easily pierce the very shield Hamilton imagined

Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown of California compared President Donald Trump supporters to prehistoric cave dwellers Monday during a New York climate event. Brown, an outspoken Trump critic, issued an usually harsh derision of Trump supporters after dismissing the president’s rhetoric on climate change science and U.S. policy toward North Korea as “stupid and dangerous and silly.” “They’re both kind of very similar,” Brown said. “You should check out the derivation of ‘Trump-ite’ and ‘troglodyte,’ because they both refer to people who dwell in deep, dark caves.” Brown attended the climate event, which coincided with the U.N. meeting in New York,

The Project, said O´Keefe, will lead to people being fired. "In the coming weeks, you’re going see one of the biggest investigations this organization has ever done," O’Keefe said. "It’s a continuation of American Pravda series. It’s aimed at the media. We’re going after their holy grail." "We have tripled our journalists in the field," he continued. "They are not even here, they are out there everyday. It’s gonna be big, it’s gonna be massive.

Hillary Clinton on Monday would not rule out the possibility of challenging the results of the 2016 presidential election, saying it’s clear the Russians influenced the outcome and that the legitimacy of President Trump’s victory could be called into question as congressional and independent probes into Russian involvement move forward. (Snip) “I wouldn’t rule it out,” she said, though she quickly admitted there’s virtually no legal path forward, and that challenging election results at this point would be unprecedented. “There are scholars, academics, who have arguments that it would be [possible], but I don’t think they’re on

President Trump disturbed some in the press after vowing in his United Nations speech to "destroy" North Korea should the country attack the U.S. In his speech, Trump referred to North Korean President Kim Jong Un as "Rocket Man" and said he was on a "suicide mission" in advancing the country´s nuclear weapons development. "The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea," he said. On Twitter, MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell said Trump "threatened to commit a war crime" by threatening North Korea.

Over the years, a curious habit has taken hold at the United Nations. A body designed to strengthen the best of humanity has too often become a font of doublespeak and appeasement that protects the worst of humanity. That tragic comity was shattered when President Trump played the skunk at the garden party and dared to tell the truth. Many truths, in fact. Among them, that Islamic terrorism is a scourge that must be stopped. That Iran is controlled by a “murderous regime” bent on getting nukes. That North Korea’s “Rocket man is on a suicide mission” and the United States “will have
