NYC loses $1.6B by returning to

New York Daily News, by Kenneth Lovett and Erin Durkin

Original Article

The expiration of mayoral control of city schools could cost the city up to $1.6 billion over 10 years — and the city would go after the state for the bill, according to a memo from de Blasio administration officials. Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris estimates that scrapping mayoral control and going back to the old system of local school boards would cost between $125 million and $160 million a year. Costs would soar because under the old system, there were more than 6,000 employees doing administrative jobs across 38 community and high school districts in 2002, not counting central staff. The city slashed

“Mayor de Blasio has utterly failed New York kids. That’s the only reason we’re having this discussion. Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature support the idea of mayoral control.”

That´s odd, de Blankmind hasn´t failed at anything else.

My niece teaches in the Bronx. She wants to work for the teachers´ union. Her take is that the administration (and dumbbell teachers) do things that make it more difficult to teach the students. It is also a part of the world where learning and education are not valued. (We don´t know why she stays there.)

On Russia, a senator´s deception,

Republican Sen. Charles Grassley´s accusation that Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer lied about President Trump and the Russia investigation -- that Schumer said the president was under investigation after he, Schumer, had been specifically told by the FBI that Trump was not -- is shedding new light on the events that led to the president´s rising frustration over the Russia probe, the FBI, and Democrats who sought to make political hay out of Trump´s troubles. Start in January. As inauguration day approached, the Trump-Russia affair dominated media talk. The central question, then as now, was whether Trump or his associates colluded

Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota has a message for fellow Democrats who yearn for President Trump’s impeachment: Be careful what they wish for; they just might get it. Mr. Franken told the International Business Times on Monday that those hoping that the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 election will pave the way for impeachment should consider Vice President Mike Pence’s policy preferences. “Pence ran the transition and some of the very worst nominees, I felt — [EPA chief Scott] Pruitt, [Education Secretary Betsy] DeVos, [HHS Secretary Tom] Price, [Budget director Mick] Mulvaney — were Pence selections, clearly, I

North Korean treatment of Western prisoners

North Korea´s deplorable record of human rights offenses speaks for itself. But the most curious element of the Otto Warmbier tragedy is why the young student may have been so badly mistreated at the hands of his captors, who some survivors say are strangely cordial to Western prisoners. Consider the case of Matthew Todd Miller, a California man who in 2014 was sentenced to six years of forced labor in North Korea. Miller, who was released six months later, says he was actually treated rather well and even was allowed to keep his iPhone and iPad for at least a month.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer is leading a search for his own replacement on the briefing room podium as part of a larger plan to shake up the White House communications operation, according to two people with knowledge of the effort. Last week, Spicer and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus reached out to Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham about the role of press secretary and Daily Mail editor David Martosko about the role of communications director, according to a White House official. Spicer and Priebus have had preliminary discussions with Ingraham, and Martosko met with chief strategist Steve Bannon

CNN has been on a 24/7 mission to knock President Trump out of office -- or, failing that, discredit him with whatever it can. How bad is it? On Saturday, CNN openly sided with Cuba´s communist regime as it slammed Trump for rolling back former president Barack Obama´s steps to expand relations with Cuba. So it´s must be a real heartbreaker for the bigwigs at CNN to see the network´s new poll on Trump. "Should Trump be investigated for obstruction of justice?" the poll asks (remembering to include a very unflattering picture of the president). As of Monday morning, 2,698,604

Watergate prosecutors had evidence that operatives for then-President Richard Nixon planned an assault on anti-war demonstrators in 1972, including potentially physically attacking Vietnam whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, according to a never-before-published memo obtained by NBC News. The document, an 18-page 1973 investigative memorandum from the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, sheds new light on how prosecutors were investigating attempts at domestic political violence by Nixon aides, an extremely serious charge. NBC News is publishing the memo, and an accompanying memo about an interview prosecutors conducted with GOP operative Roger Stone, as part of special coverage for the 45th anniversary of the Watergate

After two days and almost six hours of high-stakes public testimony, I’m struck by the total lack of any compelling claims supporting the “big” collusion narrative, that Russia conspired with Trump or Trump officials to “hack” election. While we certainly aren’t privy to all the relevant information or all the relevant testimony, nothing that James Comey said last week or that Jeff Sessions said today (much less any of the questions directed his way) contained so much as a meaningful hint that the Committee was on the verge of uncovering the political scandal of the century. Fired FBI Director James Comey has emerged as the main figure in what some Democrats believe will be an obstruction of justice case against President Trump in the Trump-Russia matter. Comey´s stories of conversations with the president, plus the fact that he was fired, ostensibly as a result of the Russia probe, make him potentially the star witness in the case. Which brings up an intriguing legal question. Comey is a good friend of special counsel Robert Mueller — such a good friend, for about 15 years now, that the two men have been described as "brothers in arms." Their work

The end of the Supreme Court term looms, and with it the prospect — the terrifying prospect — of a retirement. Specifically, the retirement of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who will turn 81 next month and is the longest-serving current justice, named to the high court almost 30 years ago. So if Kennedy is inclined to retire, it is hard to begrudge him that choice. But his departure would be terrible for the court and terrible for the country. It could not come at a worse time. Any court vacancy these days, under a president of either party, triggers a battle

A feminist magazine is calling on all white women to “do their part to prevent white supremacy” and abort their white babies. This is sick beyond words. The feminist Medusa Magazine reported: In a progressive society, it is often white families that stand in the way of equality and justice. Systemic white supremacy depends, first and foremost, on the white family unit. When white conquerors forcefully penetrated the indigenous, egalitarian homeland of the Native peoples of America, they were quick to replicate their white societies, initiating their parasitism by establishing white plantations, headed by white fathers, submissive white mothers, and,

There is a place for contempt in our public discourse. We should have contempt for a regime in North Korea that brutalized a young American student named Otto Warmbier. We should have contempt for a regime in Syria that uses poison gas to massacre innocent men, women and children. We should have contempt for Islamic State terrorists who behead Americans, burn people alive in cages and systematically rape Yazidi girls. But we should not have contempt for each other. Yet, we do.
