IS threat in Southeast Asia
raises alarm in Washington

Associated Press, by Matthew Pennington

Washington - Southeast Asia´s jihadis who fought by the hundreds for the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria now have a different battle closer to home in the southern Philippines. It´s a scenario raising significant alarm in Washington. The recent assault by IS-aligned fighters on the Philippine city of Marawi has left more than 300 people dead, exposing the shortcomings of local security forces and the extremist group´s spreading reach in a region where counterterrorism gains are coming undone. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress last week a long-running U.S. military operation to help Philippine forces

Comments:
Think the collision (ramming) of the USS Fitzgerald and Philippine-registered container ship ACX Crystal was an "accident"? I don´t, and this is why. Terrorism worldwide is "learning" (evolving) to take become a guerrilla warfare that has no limits that need only work once. Capital Hill needs to quit wasting what precious time we have to prepare for a war that is coming. Rooting out Daesh from their caliphate in Syria just means that a new one will be found as 0bama directly gave Daesh them eight years to grow from a "junior varsity" to THE preeminent threat.

If Trump wants to avoid a

invite Kim Jong Un to the White House
Independent [UK], by Kim Sengupta    Original Article

Five months ago Donald Trump tweeted that North Korea would never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the US. This morning, Pyongyang launched what it claimed was its first ever intercontinental ballistic missile. The state TV channel declared that Kim Jong-Un now ruled over “a strong nuclear armed state with a very powerful ICBM which can strike anywhere in the world”. Taking away the customary hyperbole what we saw, say international analysts, was a missile reaching an altitude of 1,741 miles and flying 580 miles before crashing into the sea. This would have reached Alaska, but no other part

New York - When caught in what many may perceive as a white lie, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s spokesperson had a simple strategy to explain perceived inconsistencies surrounding the governor’s revealed private trip to a closed public beach: call it on a technicality. When confronted with photos showing that Mr Christie had lied to reporters about going to the beach – he had said he hadn´t "had any sun" that day – a spokesperson brushed off the notion that his boss had done anything other than tell the straight and narrow truth to reporters. “He did not get any sun. He had a baseball hat on,” Brian Murray,

Russia and China joined diplomatic forces on Tuesday and called on North Korea, South Korea and the United States to sign up to a Chinese de-escalation plan designed to defuse tensions around Pyongyang´s missile program. The plan would see North Korea suspend its ballistic missile program and the United States and South Korea simultaneously call a moratorium on large-scale missile exercises, both moves aimed at paving the way for multilateral talks. The initiative was set out in a joint statement from the Russian and Chinese foreign ministries issued shortly after President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi

North Korea declared Tuesday it had successfully tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile -- a watershed moment in its push to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the mainland United States. Experts said the device could reach Alaska, and the launch, which came as Americans prepared to mark Independence Day, triggered a Twitter outburst from President Donald Trump who urged China to act to "end this nonsense once and for all". The North´s possession of a working ICBM -- something that Trump has vowed "won´t happen" -- would force a fundamental recalculation of the strategic threat posed by the isolated,

Italy has warned that the current scale of migrant arrivals is unsustainable and that it could even close its ports and impound aid agencies´ rescue ships. The EU's Schengen system - free movement across most European borders - was overwhelmed by an influx of migrants and refugees in 2015.

Seoul -North Korea launched another ballistic missile Tuesday, just a few days after the leaders of South Korea and the United States agreed to leave the door open for dialogue with the communist nation. "North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea from the vicinity of Banghyon, North Pyongan Province, at around 9:40 a.m.," the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. The North's provocation was immediately reported to President Moon Jae-in, it added, as Moon ordered the National Security Council to convene an emergency session. The Kremlin is running out of patience as it waits for the U.S. to return two diplomatic compounds shuttered in the waning days of the Obama administration, Vladimir Putin’s foreign affairs adviser said Monday. Russia has displayed “unusual flexibility” on the issue, Yuri Ushakov said. But, he added, the Kremlin’s patience “has its limits” and it’s up to the U.S. to “free Russia from the need to take retaliatory moves.” The compounds were seized from Russian control in December as a punishment for the Kremlin’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Resolved: Barack Obama is better

Washington Post, by Philip Bump    Original Article

President Trump has decided that it is important that he keep tweeting from his personal Twitter account because it allows him to speak directly to the American people outside of the filter of the mainstream media, by which he means the media’s pesky insistence on fact-checking his comments and including unflattering news in analysis of his presidency. Over the weekend, Trump took this defense of his social-media use to a new place: Not only is his tweeting perfectly fine for a president, but it is defining what it means to be presidential. (Tweet) In a sense, this is probably true, for better or worse.

Hank Greely, the director of Stanford’s Law School’s Center for Law and the Biosciences, believes the reproductive process will begin with parents choosing from a range of embryos created in a lab with their DNA. Although this can already take place, Mr Greely believes it will become far cheaper to do so and couples will opt for this method to prevent diseases. The process involves taking a female skin sample to create stem cells, which is then used to create eggs. These eggs are then fertilised with sperm cells,

Some people simply cannot handle the fact that Donald Trump was elected president. One of those people is Donald Trump. Trump has shown himself intellectually and emotionally incapable of making the transition from minor entertainment figure to major political figure. He is in the strange position of being a B-list celebrity who is also the most famous man in the world. His recent Twitter attack on Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s Morning Joe exemplifies that as much as it does the president’s other by-now-familiar pathologies, notably his strange psychological need to verbally abuse women in physical terms.
