IS threat in Southeast Asia
raises alarm in Washington

Associated Press, by Matthew Pennington

Washington - Southeast Asia´s jihadis who fought by the hundreds for the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria now have a different battle closer to home in the southern Philippines. It´s a scenario raising significant alarm in Washington. The recent assault by IS-aligned fighters on the Philippine city of Marawi has left more than 300 people dead, exposing the shortcomings of local security forces and the extremist group´s spreading reach in a region where counterterrorism gains are coming undone. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress last week a long-running U.S. military operation to help Philippine forces

Comments:
Think the collision (ramming) of the USS Fitzgerald and Philippine-registered container ship ACX Crystal was an "accident"? I don´t, and this is why. Terrorism worldwide is "learning" (evolving) to take become a guerrilla warfare that has no limits that need only work once. Capital Hill needs to quit wasting what precious time we have to prepare for a war that is coming. Rooting out Daesh from their caliphate in Syria just means that a new one will be found as 0bama directly gave Daesh them eight years to grow from a "junior varsity" to THE preeminent threat.

Accra, Ghana — The Supreme Court of Ghana ruled Thursday that the government’s decision to allow two former Guantánamo Bay detainees to live in the country was unconstitutional. Last year, Ghana signed an agreement with the United States to allow the two detainees, Khalid Mohammed Salih al-Dhuby and Mahmmoud Omar Mohammed Bin Atef, both citizens of Yemen, to resettle in Ghana. The two were captured by Afghan forces in late 2001 and turned over to the United States, and detained at the American prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as enemy combatants for 14 years, accused of being members of

Germany on Thursday passed a controversial new law that expands the power of authorities to spy on the content of encrypted message services such as WhatsApp and Skype. Amid the wave of jihadist attacks in Europe, German lawmakers voted in favour of the law designed "to reinforce the effectiveness of criminal procedures". German investigators will now be able to insert into users´ cellphones and computers spy software (or a "Trojan horse") to access data in encrypted message services such as popular applications WhatsApp and Skype, including as part of criminal investigations. Up to now, such surveillance tools were

New York - Comedian Bill Cosby - currently facing charges of sexual assault - wants to embark on a motivational speaking tour to talk to people about dealing with such allegations. Last weekend, a judge ruled a mistrial after a jury was unable to agree a verdict on the charges that that he drugged and assaulted Andrea Constand. Prosecutors say they will retry the case. Lawyers had said Ms Constand, the former director of operations for Temple University’s women’s basketball team, was attacked by Mr Cosby at his home near Philadelphia in January 2004. He had denied the allegation.

New York - The latest lawyer hired to represent U.S. President Donald Trump in the federal investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election is an ex-Marine who likens some cases to war. "I fight hard," John Dowd said in an interview. "I believe that's what I'm supposed to do. I am not a snowflake, I can tell you that." "Snowflake" is a disparaging term for people considered overly sensitive and fragile that has been adopted by some Trump supporters to mock liberals. Dowd, who spoke with Reuters on Wednesday, is a mirror of his client in many ways. He has a no-holds-barred, hyperbolic style and a history of attacking

"I recognize that repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act has become a core tenet of the Republican Party," Obama wrote. How Do Eggs Get Their Shapes?
Scientists Think They´ve Cracked It
National Public Radio, by Christopher Joyce    Original Article

One of nature´s most efficient life-support systems is the egg. Eggs evolved over 300 million years ago as vertebrate animals adapted to living on land. And since then, they´ve taken on numerous shapes, especially among birds. Biologists have long wondered why there are so many shapes, and what determines each one. Hummingbirds, for example, have eggs like Tic Tacs. Birds called murres produce eggs shaped like big teardrops. Some eggs are more like pingpong balls. Now, an international team of scientists believes it has solved the mystery of the eggs.(Snip) "Egg shape appears to be related to flight ability in birds," Stoddard says.

Mexico City - May was the deadliest month in Mexico since 1997 with three people killed every hour, according to the Mexican government. There were 2,186 homicides last month, according to figures from the Executive Secretary of the National System for Public Security which go back 20 years. In some states which were previously considered peaceful, like Baja California Sur and Nayarit, the rate doubled. “This is the overwhelming and absolute failure of Peña Nieto’s public safety policy,” Alejandro Hope, a Mexican security analyst, told BuzzFeed News. The Federal Communications Commission has levied its largest fine ever against a Florida-based robocall network responsible for nearly 100 million calls over the last three months of 2016. The agency on Thursday proposed a $120 million fine against Adrian Abramovich of Miami, Fla., alleging his operation, doing business as Marketing Strategy Leaders, made 96 million spoofed robocalls during the period in which the FCC investigated. Of those calls, about 90% were made to wireless phones, with 10% to landline phones. The calls used "neighborhood spoofing" technology to include local area codes and the first three

The government cannot strip citizenship from someone who lied during their application process if the false statement wasn’t central to their claim for immigration benefits, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The decision could make it tougher for the government to oust people it deems to have misled immigration authorities. Justice Elena Kagan, writing for the court in the unanimous decision, said the government must prove that the lie was serious enough that if officials had known the truth at the time, they would have denied citizenship. The case before the court involved Divna Maslenjak, a Serbian who sought refugee status

Jon Ossoff was on a trajectory to defeat Karen Handel narrowly, poised to deliver a humiliating blow to the White House in a race billed as a referendum of Donald Trump’s early months in office. Then the Republican voters in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District unexpectedly showed up in droves. Pollsters say sky-high turnout drove Handel, the GOP nominee, to a nearly 4-point victory on Tuesday, despite most pre-election surveys showing Ossoff with a small-but-shrinking lead. Mathematically, a 4-point loss for a Democratic House candidate in a district that has traditionally elected Republicans by wide margins is an encouraging result for

A city on Mars with a million inhabitants could be achievable within 50 years, the space entrepreneur Elon Musk has forecast, as he laid out plans to turn mankind into a multi-planetary species. The SpaceX founder warned that humans would need to venture away from Earth to avoid a ‘Doomsday event’ and our ‘eventual extinction.’ But he said that a huge Martian city could be established this century, which would not just be an outpost, but a fully functioning society with ‘iron foundries and pizza joints.’

Ed Morrissey may be on vacation but he’s still keeping his ear to the door of American politics. He popped up on Twitter this morning, searching for his dictionary to look up the definition of “chutzpah.” The reason for his apparent confusion was a rather off-putting interview with Georgia-06 Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff conducted by NPR’s Rachel Martin. The subject of the massive, record-breaking amount of cash dumped into this race couldn’t be avoided, so Martin asked Ossoff to weigh in. He did so, but his take on the subject rang a bit hollow to say the least. (Emphasis added

Despite receiving an invitation to meet with President Trump, members of the Congressional Black Caucus have reportedly chosen to decline, per Politico. Both Trump and the Congressional Black Caucus met in March to discuss issues important to CBC members, yet many in the Caucus felt as if little to no progress has been made since that meeting three months ago and that any subsequent meeting would be merely lip service. One Democratic aide illustrated the thinking of some in the Congressional Black Caucus saying, “No one wants to be a co-star on the reality show.” Former “Apprentice” star Omarosa Manigault,

California is restricting publicly funded travel to four more states because of recent laws that leaders here view as discriminatory against gay and transgender people. All totaled, California now bans most state-funded travel to eight states. The new additions to California’s restricted travel list are Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota. They join Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee as states already subjected to the ban. California Attorney Xavier Becerra announced the new states at a Thursday press conference, where he was joined by representatives from ACLU Northern California and Equality California.

Illinois is like Venezuela now, a fiscally broken state that has lost its will to live, although for the moment, we still have enough toilet paper. But before we run out of the essentials, let´s finally admit that after decade upon decade of taxing and spending and borrowing, Illinois has finally run out of other people´s money. Those "other people" include taxpayers who´ve abandoned the state. And now Illinois faces doomsday. So as the politicians meet in Springfield this week for another round of posturing and gesturing and blaming, we need a plan.

He said his administration would be ´putting in legislation to that effect very shortly.´ It is unclear, however, how Trump´s proposal would change the current situation.
