In my Navy the Captain would have been on the bridge if a container ship had been in close vicinity of my ship!

Stop it! The destroyer did NOT hit the cargo ship! The cargo ship made a U-turn and came back and rammed our destroyer square and midship. Our destroyer did not have time to avoid the attack. Our destroyer was attacked. Our ship and it´s captain are not to blame for anything so stop with the misleading headline and story content!

First sadness for the losses of these brave Americans. RIP and God help their families.

But, why does the US and Western media keep harping that the US ship ran into the cargo vessel. The cargo vessel was clearly out of control, actually radically reversing course several times at high speed, making hair pin turns in a busy shipping lane. The US ship was hit amid ships, at a sharp angle, almost perfectly targeted. What is going on here? Was this actually a deliberate act attempting to sink and american naval vessel?

Agree with #6 - and don´t forget it was 20 a.m. - even the Captain has to sleep!

My questions are:
1. Why wouldn´t a Navy destroyer assuming it is equipped with uber technological devices not have spacial radar and even LOUD warning signals when anything is within an unsafe distance especially at night?

2. Wouldn´t such high tech radar/sonar detect the erratic maneuvers of ANYTHING near it especially a vessel as large as a cargo ship?

3. Especially within such close proximity of North Korea?

Lots of speculation with a tiny amount of information.

First I hope we get the name of the captain of the cargo vessel.

Second, with what LITTLE we know it seems to me the container ship was going in the opposite direction of the destroyer. When they passed the container ship turned around and came back at high speed. As it overtook the Fitzgerald, maybe a couple of hundred feet to the starboard, (right side) the ship going much faster than the destroyer deliberately swerved into the destroyer. At these close ranges with reaction times and maneuverability the Captain of the destroyer had insufficient time to avoid the collision.

With the minuscule about of info we are given, to me it leaves no doubt this was no accident but was a deliberate act.

Something stinks in this. I´m no expert but if you look at the photos, it is obvious that the cargo ship hit the destroyer and not the other way around as it is reported by the enemedia.

Let´s not forget that the leadership of the US Navy had a huge scandal this year. Many admirals, captains and officers were ensnared in the Fat Leonard scandal. Billions of dollars were misappropriated. Admirals and captains were derelict, negligent, etc. If this much corruption has been uncovered, who knows what has not been uncovered. All of our institutions have been shown to be incompetent, unfortunately the Armed Forces are not immune. Those innocent, young soldiers died because of incompetence at the top. So very sad. God rest their souls.

Captain was NOT on the bridge - he was sleeping in his quarters at point of impact. Even leaders have to sleep sometime. Our guys not at fault. Seems to me to be a deliberate attack.

Even assuming a deliberate attack, how does a cargo ship outmaneuver a destroyer? Recall the hilarious Chinese claim that their jet fighter was rammed by a USN P3 Orion, a four-engined propellor-driven plan. Not implying the Fitz was stunting like the Chinese fighter, but the disparity in agility and speed is striking in both cases.

This ain´t hard. The Fitzgerald was the burdened vessel, the cargo ship was privileged for two reasons, even I, a Naval Academy graduate who slept through signals class and was commissioned in the Marine Corps can easily grasp (even Rio Lindans can understand). The cargo vessel saw the Fitzgerald´s starboard running lights making the cargo ship privileged. The cargo ship was MUCH LESS maneuverable than the Fitzgerald, again making the cargo ship the privileged vessel even if the cargo ship was dark on not squawking IFF. I have no idea why the Fitzgerald allowed the cargo ship to get into a constant bearing, decreasing range condition and there might be a good reason but per rules of the road, the Fitzgerald was the burdened vessel and the cargo ship was the privileged vessel. My SWAG is sans skipper on the bridge, the OOD got the Fitzgerald into an en extremis condition before the skipper got back on the bridge to unscrew everything. I also smell a No-Band-Change-of-Command for the skipper.

#13, I stand corrected at #9. The captain was in his quarters at the time of impact. The article I read just hours after the collision alluded to his presence on the bridge which is not correct.
