A perfect storm of climatic conditions turned Hurricane Irma into the monster that is currently wreaking havoc on the Caribbean and headed for the US mainland. Unusually warm ocean water in the Atlantic, high atmospheric pressure and weak wind shear have combined to fuel the category five tropical cyclone. Wind speeds of 250 kph were recorded as it hit land in Barbuda yesterday morning, before instruments broke. With ocean winds reaching sustained speeds of 183 mph (295 kph), this makes Irma the strongest storm to ever form over the Atlantic. For Irma to not only gain its strength but subsequently

Hurricane Irma — with its ferocious 185 mph winds — made landfall in the Caribbean early Wednesday, slamming into Barbuda and Antigua as it headed for Puerto Rico. Cuba and South Florida were still in Irma’s projected path into the weekend. The catastrophic Category 5 storm, the most powerful Atlantic storm on record, is expected to bring strong storm surges and up to 20 inches of rain in some places. Irma is moving west-northwest at 16 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center’s advisory at 5 a.m. Wednesday, with the track shifting slightly to the east. For the first time, North Korea specifically mentioned the possibility of an EMP attack on the US following Sunday´s test of a 100-kiloton weapon, which the regime claims is a thermonuclear bomb. The weapon could wipe out much of a city, but the pulse from a high-altitude blast could sow chaos and destruction far wider. Hillary Clinton, in her campaign post-mortem released Tuesday, tore into women who didn’t vote for her failed presidential candidacy in November and regretted it, saying ‘these people were looking for absolution that I just couldn’t give.” Clinton’s book, What Happened, is an angry account of how she lost to President Trump in November. Among the multitude of people/countries/events she blames for her defeat are young women who didn’t vote for her. In the book, she talks about the Women’s March in D.C. and other cities across America as “bittersweet” as it contrasted the enthusiasm of activists with the lack of

I know it ´s premature, since I predicted (and I stand by it) that Donald Trump would win reelection handily in 2020, but more and more I am convinced that Nikki Haley should be our first woman president. And this is not just a reaction to the recent publication of Hillary Clinton´s new book What Happened in which Mrs. Clinton apparently details precisely the opposite, blaming everyone and everything for her defeat from Bernie Sanders to the "late eclipses of the sun and moon," except for herself. Amazon has been monitoring and deleting reviews after Hillary Clinton´s new book was greeted with a torrent of criticism on the day it was released. What Happened, which covers the former Secretary of State´s unsuccessful election campaign against Donald Trump, was published on Tuesday. Clinton and her publisher Simon & Schuster claimed the book would offer a candid account of her failure and her own reflection on it.  Reviews of What Happened have been mixed, with some suggesting it Clinton uses it as an opportunity to blame others – such as Bernie Sanders and Vladimir Putin – for her failure, rather than herself.

During an interview with Vox on Tuesday, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton argued that without FBI Director James Comey, she could have picked up a point or two more among white women and that Comey allowed husbands and boyfriends to tell their wives and girlfriends that Clinton would end up in jail. Clinton began by saying that white voters have been leaving the Democratic Party since Lyndon Johnson predicted they would. She added that gender isn’t “the motivating factor that race was for President Obama.” Clinton then cited research that Sheryl Sandberg discussed with her about women become less likeable the

The country’s voting machines are susceptible to hacking, which could be done in a way so that it leaves no fingerprints, making it impossible to know whether the outcome was changed, computer experts told President Trump’s voter integrity commission Tuesday. The testimony marked a departure for the commission, which was formed to look into fraud and barriers to voting, but which heard that a potentially greater threat to confidence in American elections is the chance for enemy actors to meddle. “There’s no perfect security; there’s only degrees of insecurity,” said Ronald Rivest, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
