Gone With the Wind: Olivia de Havilland,
100, becomes oldest ever Dame

Daily Mail [UK], by Tim Lamden

She’s one of the last surviving legends of Hollywood’s golden age. Her beauty and enigmatic smile saw Olivia de Havilland play alongside the biggest names of the silver screen – Errol Flynn, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. (Snip) But it is only now – two weeks before her 101st birthday – that the Gone With The Wind actress has been given a damehood for services to drama. It makes her the oldest woman ever to receive the honour. In a statement, she called it ‘the most gratifying of birthday presents’. For all her talent in front of the cameras, Dame

Comments:
This is absolutely amazing. She looks wonderful in the photo of her from 2011. Until I read this I didn´t know she was the sister of Joan Fontaine and they had a rocky relationship. It´s sad that they didn´t speak from 1975 until Fontaine´s death in 2013. I can´t imagine that ever happening with me and my sister. They sure have good genes in that family. Fontaine was 96 when she died.

One of my favorite movies. I bought the DVD a year ago when I feared it would be banned. When I was in high school in the 70´s my friend and I went to see it at a drive-in. We didn´t get home until 40 a.m. because the movie was so long.

Wonderful. One of the greatest movies of all time. As another poster remarked, it´s a wonder that the Nazis on the left haven´t tried to ban it since it shows some sympathy toward the South. Can´t have that, of course, they want to wipe out any vestiges of the Confederacy.

Well, they can kiss my rebel ass.

Maybe it was meant to be that way in the movie (base on the book), but Olivia de Havilland´s presence as Melanie was so beautiful, so romantic, so lovely, so sweet, so sublime. So non-Scarlett.

Good for her. Now, let´s view her other movies. I plan to.

#1 – Your comment brought up an old memory. In the early 70’s our local drive-in offered a double feature: How the West was Won, and Gone With the Wind. We hid two girls in the trunk of my mother’s ’68 Bonneville. We got out at 4am also. Fun times.

GWTW is my absolute favorite movie and Dame Olivia’s portrayal of Melanie Wilkes made a great impression on me. I’ve enjoyed her movies on TCM for decades. I think “The Heiress” is probably her greatest performance. I can still hear the steel in her voice when she says, “Lock the door, Mariah.”

As far as the sister thing with Joan, my sympathies always sided with Dame Olivia. It always seemed to me that Fontaine was consumed by jealously. I’ve had some rocky times with a sister and I can empathize.

Dame Olivia is a lady, a very great lady, just like Melanie Wilkes.

really took something to make Miss DeHaviland a plain girl but with expert makeup and Olivia´s impeccable acting, by golly they really pulled it off!

Olivia somehow blocked her sister from using the family name, believing it would diminsh her status as a leading lady.
Olivia is not a nice person, but that doesn´t diminish her acting abilities.

There were few actresses at any time who were as ravishingly beautiful as Dame Olivia de Havilland in 1938 when she played Maid Marian aside her distant cousin--reportedly fifth cousin, twice removed--Errol Flynn in Robin Hood, a classic for the ages in its own right. Among her many outstanding performances I enjoyed her Miriam in Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Of course, her sweet Melanie in Gone With the Wind will live forever.

Her bad relationship with talented younger sister Joan Fontaine is regrettable--we should strive to forgive earlier slights--but lingering over that is unnecessary in light of the triumphant and long life she has lived. I hope she makes 115. In her 2011 picture (age 97), she could pass for a full generation younger.

Hers were the days when the studio moguls practically "owned" their actors/actresses by contract. Anything they did, said, or wore was subject to scrutiny. As a result, the ´normal afflictions´ of youth and beauty were subject to business sense, while "handlers" kept them in line, including Errol Flynn. Any scandal would mean the end of a promising career, and sometimes did. As a result of this oversight, the actresses remained "chaste" in the eyes of their adoring fans and the actors were the rugged, love idols of women everywhere.

I need not describe today´s degeneracy and resultant destruction of the art of film.

The two-year-old restored US diplomatic relationship with Cuba was roiled Wednesday by what US officials say was a string of bizarre incidents that left a group of American diplomats in Havana with severe hearing loss attributed to a covert sonic device. In retaliation for the hearing loss incidents the US State Department has expelled two Cuban diplomats from the US over safety concerns of American officials and launched an investigation. Blonde hair is at least 11,000 years old. The variety we’re now most familiar with began as a genetic mutation in northern Europe, where the sun is weak: Light hair allows more vitamin D to trickle in through the scalp, the theory goes, which is useful when the sky is cold and dark. There are two possible rationales: the legitimate one and the brass-knuckles one. Here’s the thing to bear in mind about the Washington Post’s report that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had the FBI execute a search warrant against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in late July: Prosecutors don’t do pre-dawn raids on the home of a cooperating witness.
