Their tearful queen, the one woman they wanted

Rhianna Levi, 17, was so busy giving her details to the British Red Cross volunteer at the door that she didn’t spot the police outrider drawing up behind her. Nor did she notice the noisy metallic chorus of camera shutters or the blue hat moving towards her. Her mind was on finding somewhere for her family to live for the foreseeable future. Forms completed, she turned round to rejoin her mother. Whereupon, she found herself chatting to the Queen. After this week’s carefully stage-managed appearances at the Grenfell disaster zone by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, there was something

I´ll give her credit. At her advanced age she could have easily sent a lesser one of the Royal family.

Of all the royals, only Elizabeth has impressed me over the decades. From her younger years helping with the war effort, and her amazing ability to balance the royal pomp and circumstance with a touch of reality and sensible views, and no giant ego apparent.

I doubt we will see her equal again.

She is a tough old bird, and I say that with deepest respect. It´s the way I referred to my 90+ year old aunts who lived through the depression.

God save the Queen, I believe she intends to outlive Charles.

I agree with you #2. Queen Elizabeth is from another time and generation, not one that let everything hang out, but one of quiet dignity. I believe Elizabeth really does care very much for her people, and this visit once again confirms it.

A police officer, a songwriter and a surgeon who were blocked by on Twitter by Donald Trump are among a group suing the President. A lawsuit has been filed by seven Twitter users who have fallen foul of the commander-in-chief, plus the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University. It has accused Trump of trying to ´suppress dissent´ after the seven criticized him on the social network. Legal papers state: ´In an effort to suppress dissent in this forum, Defendants have excluded—“blocked”—Twitter users who have criticized the President or his policies. ´This practice is unconstitutional, and this suit seeks to end it.´

Sadiq Khan today tore into YouTube for refusing to take down four ´shocking´ videos boasting about gang violence which were reported to them by the police. The London Mayor warned that people could be killed needlessly unless more is done to take down material which encourages violence. The menacing videos, in which gang members wearing scarves and masks and brag about how they would murder their rivals, have been viewed over 356,000 times. The Metropolitan Police reported the clips to the internet giant in December, but despite having policies to remove threatening material, eight months on YouTube have

Now we´re getting down to brass tacks. The UK is prepared to offer the EU £36 billion in payment of outstanding liabilities as we leave, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The figure seems to be well sourced and has a plausibility about it. Equivalent to 40 billion euros it is significantly less than the 100 billion euros some in the EU had mooted and is at least approaching the same ball park as the more commonly suggested 60 billion euros. Two things are particularly interesting here. Firstly, there has not been much outrage amongst Eurosceptics. Richard Tice, from the Leave Means Leave campaign
