Valedictorians´ days numbered?
Schools rethink class ranking

LANCASTER, N.Y.- At many American high schools, the graduation-day tradition of crowning a valedictorian is becoming a thing of the past. The ranking of students from No. 1 on down, based on grade-point averages, has been fading steadily for about the past decade. In its place are honors that recognize everyone who scores at a certain threshold - using Latin honors, for example. This year, one school in Tennessee had 48 valedictorians. About half of schools no longer report class rank, according to the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Administrators worry about the college prospects of students separated by

Class rank is a victim of grade creep. Any school that has 48 valedictorians doesn´t have any grade discipline.

Actually, I like the idea. Class Valedictorian may have the best GPA, but when studying is all they do, with no extra or intra curriculars, and nothing outside of academics that contribute to how rounded their prep school education really is, the standing can be misleading. More weight needs to be given to overall involvement and overall achievement in a number of areas that school instruction can´t necessarily measure.

Yeah, NOTHING!!

If you want to reward students for being busy, then that´s a different award altogether!

The problem is that the Valedictorian took 3 shop classes, 2 music classes, and 3 PE classes.
The kid 10th in class took Calculus II, Physics, Trig, etc. My daughter was just a victim of these antics. That is how the afleetes keep their GPA up.

#17 Caveman points out a big problem. It happened at my son´s very good high school. The only way the PE & foods class kids were kept out of the top spots was by a kid taking lots of AP classes and getting A´s in them. If the school won´t differentiate between gym class and Calculus then the award loses its meaning.

Ex-Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson’s testimony Wednesday should mark the definitive end of “Russia hacked the election” hysteria. Too bad it took so long to get to this point. Johnson told the House Intelligence Committee outright that the Russians failed to alter “ballots, ballot counts or reporting of election results.” Yes, it’s clear Russia (with Vladimir Putin’s full approval) orchestrated cyberattacks designed to influence the 2016 contest, and also pushed fake news. But the hack, and release via WikiLeaks, etc., of Democratic e-mails produced nothing game-changing.
