No family member was employed in 16,069,000 U.S. families in 2016, or 19.6 percent of families, according to newly released data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of families with nobody employed increased by roughly 19,000 from 2015 to 2016, although the percentage slightly declined from 19.7 percent to 19.6 percent. For the purpose of the study, the bureau counts a family as households headed by a married couple or by unmarried women or men. The definition includes households with children under 18 years old and households without children. There were 82,092,000 families in the United States in 2016, according
Comments: "lack of job skills"? Well, no. A larger cause is the abundance of entitlement checks.
Umm...is there any other common trait among those families in which not a single person works? Why yes, yes there is, as noted in the statistics farther down in the article. Looks like the federal government is now running the biggest plantation in the world.
Unsurprisingly, between the Democrats destroying our economy (after they took over both Houses in 2007) and Obama´s assuming office in 2009, the highest recent percentage was in 2011. Also, what is the age distribution? Couldn´t a healthy chunk of the families where no member is employed be retirees, a group which as the boomers retire would seem likely to expand? The statistics presented would be more meaningful if it were considering more typically working age Americans. Another question is what percentage of families are entirely comprised of people who have either never had a job or have no history of regular employment. btw, Hispanics are walking right into the welfare trap that has destroyed many millions of Black families since the War on Poverty first began.
And while y´all are indignantly riding your "entitlement" hobby horses around the conservative corral, don´t forget that rather many of us are 70-something year-old baby boomers. We are finally retired, or at least semi-retired, living the good life, wallowing in Social Security luxury. Enjoying the generosity of the dole, lazily drinking our malt liquors, waiting on the front porch for our next free! check. Thanks, y´all! (Don´t believe all the numbers you read. Remember what they say about liars, damned liars, and statistics?)
While I don´t agree with your characterization, #6, the article leaves unclear whether the depressing statistic includes retirees who are enjoying themselves after 40+ years of work and contributing to their current affluence. A more honest assessment would be to know the percentage of under 65s who aren´t working. That number, I suspect, would still be depressing.
I may have missed it, but the statistics don´t seem to break out retirees. In addition, the statistics do not including working off the books, drug dealing, prostitution, other criminal activities. (Up until the Dollar Bill Clinton presidency, the IRS was allowed to do lifestyle audits - that´s how Al Capone went to jail. Those audits were killed by the Clintons)
No the fact that 20 Percent of families do not have anyone working is government welfare programs have made to easy to not have to.
Policymakers do not need to address the "skills gap that is preventing these unemployed families from seizing these available good jobs," they need to drastically cut welfare programs to force them to seek training and enter the workforce.
So boys and girls here´s what we really need to get our arms around:
20% or so (as pointed out undefined contribution from retirees) with no worker likely to vote for more free stuff
20% or close to it (16.7%) of all people who are employed work in government jobs from local to federal. Likely to vote for more government, it´s their trade.
Many others in neither above category do work but are net beneficiaries of wealth redistribution. Without a means of eliminating intersection with the above that´s 47%. Not likely to vote for you and I to keep more of our income.
We have passed a tipping point. The only thing saving us at this juncture is that there´s a reason those of us who pay for all the rest of them have the means to do so and they do not: We get up in the morning and work, and when that´s not enough we work harder. When we hit a bump in the road and are out of work we pick ourselves up go back to school, take a lesser position, do whatever it takes to get back to work.
Those on the dole lack the ambition to do otherwise so we can just barely beat their numbers at the poles. So of course they import more gimmedats.
Apologies to the genuinely needy for whom it is our honor to assist. You are being used as cover for the thieves.

When Hurricane Ike devastated much of East Texas some years ago....I received a letter from the state which confirmed that as small business owner in this area I was entitled to compensation $ because my business could not operate due to the unavailability of lights, gas and all the things needed to run a business. I took this letter down to the local welfare office, as instructed, where I was met with a dozen Black office workers who looked me up and down and told me to take sorry white azz back home cuz they didn´t no nuffin´ ´bout no money for no honkies like me.
I´m no White Supremacist.....but I´m becoming open to the idea.
One more point: many of us "unemployed" contribute by volunteer efforts, working for free in clinics, schools, and museums, building Habitat houses, maintaining historic properties, teaching ESL and GED prep, running summer programs for kids. Some of us work part-time, doing yard work, accounting, baby sitting, housekeeping, free-lance writing and photography, editing, tutoring. We don´t make that enviable list of worthily employed folk. But our efforts add considerably to the weal of the community. Stick that in your statistical pipe and smoke it.
According to the technical notes linked to the article:
"Family A family is a group of two or more persons residing together who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption."
That would apparently include retirees.
"Unemployed The unemployed are persons who had no employment during the reference week, were available for work at that time, and HAD MADE SPECIFIC EFFORTS to find employment sometime during the 4 week period ending with the reference week."
Many retirees have small businesses or part-time jobs. Employment is any paying job with no minimum number of hours, and any small business.
My wife is retired and I haven´t received a W-2 in 15 years. Kids out of the house for 20 years. I have a six figure income while being technically unemployed as I was laid off from my last "real" job even though I never applied for benefits. It would be wise to assess these employment figure with a whole shaker full of salt.
FTA: The presence of children made parents in the family more likely to be active in the labor force. In 2016, 80.4 percent of families with children under 18 years participated in the labor force by holding a job or looking for one, compared with 56.7 percent of families with no child under 18 years.
That´s where they hid the retirees..."households without children," 43.3% not working. I´d hazard to guess not all of that sector are of "working age" (young adults before building a family and career) but are included to make the statistic look worse because we now have a Republican administration.
I am not older than 65 but I am retired from homeschooling my three children through high school. My youngest isn´t employed either. She is a full time student and due to other medical issues and our ability to support her in school, she doesn´t work but attends college all year long. If my husband were to die tomorrow, we would be one of these families since I have medical issues that prevent me from working but don´t receive any governmental assistance. Therefore, they may consider me an able-bodied person, but I am not. Also, since my dh can support us, why does our family employment statistics matter to anyone? Phony stats.
Many of those on welfare are there because it´s more lucrative. We have trained people to think if you are broke, others keep giving you things and the more kids you have the more refunds you will receive. Do better and lose it all. Worse yet, a lot of food handouts are not healthy, so I see why they develop diabetes and high blood pressure.
Unfortunately, whatever is done to correct the problem will throw the disabled and elderly under the bus too. A refugee will receive more SS and benefits (plus money to start a business) than most retirees.
In the 2004 puppet satire film “Team America: World Police,” a grotesque, gluttonous and evil Michael Moore rants outside Mount Rushmore and eventually – strapped with dynamite like a suicide bomber – blows it up. One would think that members of the political left would stop becoming the absurd caricature that people like the producers of the film – Trey Parker and Matt Stone – keep making them out to be. But the absurdity goes on. What started out as an issue of the right to assemble and protest against the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in
In January 2012, President Barack Obama finalized his regulation banning employers from offering their staff health insurance unless it paid the entire cost of birth control. The penalty for providing coverage without birth control was set at $100 a day per worker — more than 15 times as much as the penalty for offering no coverage at all. This mandate was not part of the Obamacare law passed by Congress. It probably wouldn´t have passed if the controversial proviso had been included. In the time since, the mandate has been battered by litigation. A unanimous Supreme Court recently rebuffed the Obama administration´s
Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Saturday evening issued an executive order removing the case of two police officers slain in Kissimmee, Fla., from a prosecutor who had previously stated she opposes the death penalty. “Today, I am using my executive authority to reassign this case to State Attorney Brad King to ensure the victims of last night’s attack and their families receive the justice they deserve,” Scott said in the order. King will replace State Attorney Aramis Ayala, who argued earlier this year that the death penalty is not a deterrent and causes cases to drag on for years, inflicting anguish
Growing debate over the removal of Confederate monuments Debate is heating up throughout the country over what to do with Confederate statues and memorials. But it appears, at least for now, that 10 major U.S. Army bases will keep the names of Confederate soldiers. The Army refused to answer questions last week on whether those bases – including Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Hood in Texas, and Fort Benning in Georgia – will keep their names, the Charlotte Observer reported. All 10 U.S. military bases named for Confederate soldiers are located in
Last Sunday ABC News had absolutely no question about how to identify the van driver in Charlottesville: “REGISTERED REPUBLICAN.” I guess none of the terrorists in Barcelona yesterday were REGISTERED REPUBLICANS, but then, judging by the headlines last night, it’s somewhat unclear if a human being was even involved in this latest slaughter. Washington Post: “Van Rams into Barcelona Crowd.” MarketWatch: “Barcelona Truck Attack reportedly leaves at least 12 dead.” So was it a truck or a van that committed this atrocity? The New York Times at least said, “Van Driver Kills 13.” These Muslim terror attacks are like the old movie “Groundhog Day.” It’s
This month marks 40 years since NASA launched the two Voyager space probes on their mission to explore the outer planets of our Solar System, and Australia has been helping the US space agency keep track of the probes at every step of their epic journey. CSIRO operates NASA’s tracking station in Canberra, a set of four radio telescopes, or dishes, known as the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC). It’s one of three tracking stations spaced around the globe, which form the Deep Space Network. The other two are at Goldstone, in California, and Madrid, in Spain. Between them they provide
On July 18, 2015, about a month into his long-shot campaign for president, Donald Trump famously attacked John McCain. "He´s not a war hero," he said. "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren´t captured." Campaigning in Iowa that summer, Trump mocked Jeb Bush for being "low-energy." In February 2016, Trump said Bush´s brother, the forty-third president, had lied in order to invade Iraq. When Mitt Romney attacked Trump the following month, Trump responded by calling the 2012 Republican nominee a "choke artist." On his path to the 2016 GOP nomination and then the
There´s a whiff of Weimar in the air. During the years of the Weimar Republic (1919-33), Germany was threatened by Communist revolutionaries and Nazi uprisings. Foreign Minister Walter Rathenau was assassinated, and violent street fighting was commonplace. Then Adolf Hitler took power in 1933. America is nowhere near that point. But many surely agree with The American Interest´s Jason Willick, who wrote Sunday that "this latest round of deadly political violence has" him "more afraid for" the United States than he has "ever been before." But as he pointed out, this political violence -- identity politics violence is a more precise term
A federal judge on Thursday ordered the IRS to name the specific employees the agency blames for targeting tea party groups for intrusive scrutiny and said the government must prove it has ceased the targeting. Judge Reggie B. Walton also said the IRS must explain the reasons for the delays for 38 groups that are part of a lawsuit in the District of Columbia, where they are still looking for a full accounting of their treatment. Judge Walton approved another round of limited discovery in the case and laid out six questions that the IRS must answer, including the employees’ names, why
The attempt to find systemic police bias has come to this: the difference between an officer saying “uh” and saying “that, that’s.” According to Stanford University researchers, police officers in Oakland, California, use one of those verbal tics more often with white drivers and the other more often with black drivers. If you can guess which tic conveys “respect” and which “disrespect,” you may have a career ahead of you in the exploding field of bias psychology. In June, a team of nine Stanford psychologists, linguists, and computer scientists released a paper purporting to show that Oakland police treat black drivers
Now for a few words about the Confederate statues contretemps in various states. 1. I wonder how many of the counter-protesters at the Charlottesville event even had any idea who Robert E. Lee was. He was a major hero of the Mexican-American War. He fought for the Confederacy against the Union, but at the time he did it, it was not illegal. Slavery was — while 100 percent evil — completely protected by law as of 1861. When Lee went to work to defend his native Virginia, he was not violating any law. In fact, at no time did the
Thousands of fans of Elvis Presley gathered at his iconic Memphis mansion, Graceland, on Tuesday to honor “the King of Rock” a day prior to the 40th anniversary of his death. The vigil was attended by Elvis’ former wife Priscilla Presley, 72, who was snapped mingling with attendees in the afternoon. Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child, was also at the memorial alongside 10-year-old twin daughters Harper Lockwood and Finley Lockwood. The 47-year-old rocker lit candles with mourners, joining them for a procession throughout the grounds of the 13.8-acre estate — which includes the graves of Elvis, his parents and his grandmother. Elvis
WASHINGTON – Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) said many federal employees are leaving the Environmental Protection Agency and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration over “fear” that the Trump administration is going to “suppress their viewpoints” or move them to irrelevant positions. Beyer, ranking member of the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Oversight, was asked if he would have full access to the “unfiltered” final version of the latest federal government report on climate change. The New York Times published a leaked draft of the report, which was submitted to the Trump administration for review. “The majority members of my committee may
Yvette Felarca, the Berkeley area school teacher and militant left-wing protester responsible for organizing the riot at the University of California, Berkeley in February 2017, claims that violence against the far-right is “not a crime.” Felarca, who belongs to “By Any Means Necessary,” a far-left group, is currently facing assault charges after she was caught on video assaulting a white supremacist during a July 2016 rally in Sacramento, Cali. (Video) The school teacher and her compatriots engaged in violent clashes against members of the far-right Traditional Worker’s Party, which had a permit to march in the city. The violence between
Federal authorities are investigating whether sensitive data was stolen from congressional offices by several Pakistani-American tech staffers and sold to Pakistani or Russian intelligence, knowledgeable sources say. What started out 16 months ago as a scandal involving the alleged theft of computer equipment from Congress has turned into a national-security investigation involving FBI surveillance of the suspects. Investigators now suspect that sensitive US government data — possibly including classified information — could have been compromised and may have been sold to hostile foreign governments that could use it to blackmail members of Congress or even put their lives at risk.
Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal hoped for the assassination of President Trump in a Facebook comment on Thursday then deleted it in a panic. She even acknowledged she would get a visit from the Secret Service for her comment. (Photo) Maria Chappelle-Nadal’s Facebook comment was so egregious that even ABC News reported on the story. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports: Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City, posted a comment in a Facebook conversation Thursday morning saying she hoped President Donald Trump will be assassinated. The comment was removed but Chappelle-Nadal confirmed to the Post-Dispatch that she had written it in
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has revealed that during the 2016 presidential campaign, House Speaker Paul Ryan told him and his fellow Republicans to give up on Donald Trump´s campaign and just focus their energy on keeping "President Hillary Clinton accountable." According to Ryan, the Republicans had no chance at the White House, so at the very least they should try to retain their House majority. The directive came during a conference call, Gohmert told The Daily Caller in a video interview and then confirmed again during his appearance on "Fox & Friends" Sunday. The Texas Republican, as you can imagine, was not
As the “Russian Collusion” excuse for Hillary’s loss fails for want of evidence (and common sense) as did her “misogyny” claim before it, Hillary’s pal, Governor Terry McAuliffe, obviously thought he had another keen plan to keep his party from utter ruin. Instead, he is more likely to have stirred up a whirlwind, which will sink his party even further in the voters’ eyes. Led by Charlottesville Deputy Mayor Wes Bellamy (a McAuliffe appointee to the local school board now on leave for racist, sexist, homophobic tweets, the city council narrowly approved removing a statue of Robert E. Lee from
Ten sailors are missing and five have been reported injured after the USS John S McCain was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel on Monday morning, the Navy has said. The collision between the US guided-missile destroyer and merchant vessel Alnic MC was reported at 5.24am local time. The John McCain was underway east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, on its way to a routine port visit in Singapore. It is now sailing under its own power and heading to port, the Navy said. The crew is reportedly fighting flooding in two crew berthings and an area of the ship known as the 'shaft alley'.
WASHINGTON — The Secret Service can no longer pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump´s family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast. Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex´´ Alles, in an interview with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year. The agency has faced a crushing workload since the height of the contentious election season, and it
NEW YORK -- A former New York City police officer, whose claims of police corruption in the 1970s were chronicled in an Al Pacino movie, joined dozens of current and former officers Saturday at a rally in support of getting quarterback Colin Kaepernick a job in the NFL. Kaepernick, the former starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, became a controversial figure last year after he refused to stand for the national anthem in what he called a protest against oppression of people of color. He opted out of his contract in March and became a free agent, but so
WASHINGTON — Five days after President Donald Trump took office, he signed an executive order that promised a swift, sharp crackdown on illegal immigration — immediate construction of a massive border wall, quick hiring of 5,000 new Border Patrol agents and stepped-up deportation of undocumented migrants. "Beginning today, the United States of America gets back control of its borders," Trump declared at the Jan. 25 ceremony at the Department of Homeland Security, which controls federal immigration agencies. Seven months later, construction of the wall has yet to begin, the number of Border Patrol officers has actually dropped by 220
The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Sunday gave a strong endorsement to the movement for removing monuments to leaders of the Confederacy and called for the electoral college to be abolished. Speaking at the Islamic Center of Southern California, Jackson blamed the electoral college system, giving disproportionate influence to less populated states, for the 2000 and 2016 loss of Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Hillary Clinton despite their winning the popular vote. “Today we are looking at a structural problem,” Jackson said. “These monuments must go. Calling for the audience to repeat, he said, “Say the monuments and the flags
Trust in the mass media is at an all-time low. Two-thirds of Americans believe the mainstream press publishes fake news. Yes, there’s still much good journalism to be found, if you know where to look. Yet, ask reporters who’ve been around a while, and many will tell you that a lot of good journalism is being left unpublished. Good journalists hate what’s happening to the news. We have only ourselves to blame. Firewalls that once strictly separated news from opinion have been replaced by hopelessly blurred lines. Once-forbidden practices such as editorializing within straight news reports, and the inclusion of opinions as if
