The Ossoff variations

The jejune Jon Ossoff fell just short of winning the special election in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District yesterday. He will face Republican Karen Handel in the runoff election in June. The contest therefore shapes up as a conventional Democrat versus Republican matchup rather than the cage match of yesterday’s special election with a field of 18 candidates. America Rising has posted a clip of Ossoff fielding questions from CNN’s Alisyn Camerota (video below). Following up on reports that Ossoff doesn’t even live in the district, Camerota asks him: “Is

If fascism comes to America, it will be through our college and university system. The biggest cowards in our country today are many, if not most, of our college and university administrators followed closely by a fair amount of their faculty. They are allowing their institutions to be taken over by a monolithic world view that is increasingly totalitarian and antithetical to the diversity of opinion on which the search for truth depends. The inmates are running the asylum -- and not with any of the humor of One Flew Over the Cuckoo´s Nest. It´s only a slight exaggeration to say that

The Democrats are spending millions on all of the special elections that are being held to fill seats vacated by House members who have been appointed to positions in the Trump administration. They see these elections as a way to symbolically repudiate Donald Trump, and they think that by deploying their vast financial resources, they can steal a seat or two that they wouldn’t normally win. Such a race is taking place in Montana to fill the seat formerly held by Ryan Zinke, now Secretary of the Interior. The Democrats, seeking someone who can pretend to be a common man, have

Apparently modern America can´t shut the borders but it can shut itself down. "´We feel very confident the government’s not going to shut down,´ White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday, although he said he wouldn’t guarantee it. The spokesman wouldn’t say whether the president was willing to shut the government down over funding for the border wall." There are other things which once possible, are no longer so. CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Church of Scientology has for the moment at least lost a bid to kill $26 million in public funding for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The church made a last minute bid to block tourism tax funding for the aquarium’s expansion one day before Tuesday’s Pinellas County Commission meeting. The church argued that the aquarium is not deserving of public support for a myriad of reasons. Commissioners essentially ignored the church’s objections at their meeting Tuesday and forwarded the proposal along with other recommended projects to a special committee that will negotiate the details of how that

Democratic lawmakers reintroduced a bill on Tuesday that would ban conversion therapy nationwide, a controversial practice that seeks to change a person´s sexual orientation or gender identity. The practice is currently banned in six states and in the District of Columbia. The Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act, filed by Senators Patty Murray of Washington and Corey Booker of New Jersey, constitutes a renewed effort from Congressional Democrats to ban conversion therapy after a Republican majority let the bill die without a hearing last year. Today we celebrate the centennial anniversary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song. She was a remarkable artist. Each period of her long career is rewarding, though she deepened her art as she got older. She excelled in a wide variety of material and in every musical setting. There is an emotional reserve or detachment in her singing, but there is also joy and an irrepressible sense of fun in her approach. In my eyes she was one of the twentieth century’s great artists, deep in the American grain. Ted Gioia anticipated the occasion and paid

The forthcoming elections in France are being watched as a bellwether, not just of France, but of Europe itself. David Goldman (Spengler) writes: "the surge in support for ultra-leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon to 19% in the French presidential polls -- from just 11.4% on March 13 -- shows how dangerous the French political situation has become." Dangerous in what way? (Snip) The problem the election is trying to solve, Spengler explains, is recovering Europe from a spin that traditional political parties are powerless to fix. It is doubtful that this march represents a true cross-section of actual scientists, but you never know. In any case, the whole thing parodies itself, making our job easy. In 2004, Harvard geneticist Richard Lewontin wrote a shocking admission in the New York Review of Books: “Most scientists are, at a minimum, liberals, although it is by no means obvious why this should be so.
