The Ossoff variations

The jejune Jon Ossoff fell just short of winning the special election in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District yesterday. He will face Republican Karen Handel in the runoff election in June. The contest therefore shapes up as a conventional Democrat versus Republican matchup rather than the cage match of yesterday’s special election with a field of 18 candidates. America Rising has posted a clip of Ossoff fielding questions from CNN’s Alisyn Camerota (video below). Following up on reports that Ossoff doesn’t even live in the district, Camerota asks him: “Is

Islamic State jihadis have blown up the landmark Great Mosque of al-Nuri and its famous leaning minaret in Mosul, Iraq´s army said on Wednesday night. The Iraqi army had launched a push, backed by British and American forces, to regain the medieval mosque and surrounding areas from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) fighters earlier in the day. The twelfth-century mosque, along with its minaret, was one of Iraq´s most famous buildings. And it was where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Isil leader, declared the creation of the so-called caliphate in a speech in summer 2014 after his fighters swept through large

In 2016 the Western political system had a stroke. Since then it has been incoherent and unable to focus. One example of incoherence is it´s attitude towards Russia. "The Kremlin is viewing the shoot-down, at least publicly, as an act of blatant aggression by the US and its coalition partners and is demanding a full investigation into to incident, including why the deconfliction phone was not used first before

It´s time to ignore the travel ban, which has become an absurd political football thanks to the moral narcissists of the Ninth Circuit who take a tweet more seriously than the law. The ban was only for three months anyway, scarcely a minute in the grand scheme of things, and meant to allow for the development of so-called "extreme vetting." So do it. Time to cut to the proverbial chase, determine what that vetting would look like, and institute it before more people die and America starts to look like Europe with Fifth Avenue turning into the Champs-Élysées. The year´s most important news story probably never made it into your news feed. Nonetheless it might change your life forever. For the first time, China has demonstrated that it is far ahead of the United States in a critical new technology, namely quantum communications. A Chinese satellite succeeded in transmitting so-called entangled photons to earth stations. That´s the high-tech equivalent of sending a message in undeveloped photographic film: If you try to read it, the light will destroy it. The Chinese breakthrough has huge implications for cryptography, and for a host of other applications. The tortoise just overtook the hare.

A number of recent articles have argued that America -- and the post WW2 order -- is broken. Ian Bremmer, the president of Eurasia Group, a political-risk consultancy wrote that the "Pax Americana, the stabilizing role played by the U.S. superpower, is no more. The G-Zero era—where no one country (or constellation of countries) is willing or able to assume the responsibility of global leadership—is now officially upon us. And it’s already wreaking havoc." The phrase "G-Zero" is a play off the slogan of the G-20, which assumed the world could be led by a small elite of countries. In

WASHINGTON – Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday introduced legislation that would automatically register voters who transmit information to state and federal agencies, potentially adding 50 million new voters around the country. In introducing the legislation on the House Floor, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) discussed Shelby County v. Holder, a 2013 Supreme Court decision that struck down certain aspects of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and eliminated the need for nine states to seek federal approval for altering voting laws. Central to the decision was the debate over racial discrimination through polling laws. Controversial voting laws in Texas and South Carolina went into effect

In late May, 40 scientists from five Canadian universities set off from Quebec City on the icebreaker and Arctic research vessel CCGS Amundsen. The expedition was the first leg of a four-year, C$17m research project designed to delve into the effects of climate change on Hudson Bay. The icebreaker was soon diverted.
