Former President George H.W. Bush, hospitalized for a second time this year due to another case of pneumonia, got a "big morale boost" from a visit by another former president, his son George W. Bush. "No father has ever been more blessed, or prouder," the elder Bush tweeted Thursday along with a picture of the two smiling together. (Photo/Tweet) George H.W. Bush, 92, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday "for observation due to a persistent cough that prevented him from getting proper rest" and was diagnosed with pneumonia, Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath said. GHW doesn´t look good in the picture. I had a cousin around GHW´s age who had frequent cases of pneumonia and pleurisy once before the final case carried her off. It sounds like GHW is on the same vector.

On a similar note, James Earl Carter has been uncharacteristically quiet lately. It makes me wonder if his brain cancer has taken a turn for the worse.

What would you conclude if you voted for a candidate or a party because of a promise to repeal or change a law that you strongly felt was harmful and unjust, but once in office the party refused to do it? You might conclude, rightly, that those politicians didn’t really work for you, and the party didn’t care what you thought. That’s precisely the message Republicans have been sending their constituents throughout the Obamacare repeal fiasco. The failure of Senate Republicans to pass a so-called “skinny repeal” in the early hours of Friday is merely the latest instance of GOP

On October 24, a project that has been 80 years in the making and 20 years in the writing will be released in the form of a book titled, “Never Look at the Empty Seats,” a memoir of my life, my career, and my experiences and a wee bit of advice to those whippersnappers who would like to pursue a career I’ve devoted over 60 years of my life to. I know, I know, the title is kinda weird, so let me explain it. When you’re just starting out, trying to establish a career, if you’re truly serious about it,

President Trump has just announced via Twitter that he has fired Reince Priebus from the position of Chief-of-Staff and has replaced him with DHS Secretary John Kelly. It would appear GOPe Priebus’s inability to guide ObamaCare was the final straw. The wife of Anthony Scaramucci has filed for divorce. Multiple sources tell Page Six that Deidre Ball has decided to call it quits with the newly appointed White House Communications Director after three years of marriage. ´She is tired of his naked ambition, which is so enormous that it left her at her wits’ end,´ said one source. Another source said that Scaramucci´s new boss was also causing problems in the couple´s relationship. ´Deidre is not a fan of Trump, and she hasn’t exactly been on board and supportive of Anthony and his push to get back into the White

You’re not the only one spending fewer summer weekends watching other people get married—but don’t worry, the weddings you’re still invited to might feel a little more special these days. Fewer Americans are getting married, and the ones who still are have scaled back their weddings. Their nuptials are becoming smaller, though not necessarily cheaper, affairs. (Graph) Many couples are waiting longer and longer to schedule their weddings. In 2015, the median first-time American bride was almost 28 years old and the median groom almost 30, according to the

Repair crews got their first look Friday at a damaged cable that caused a power outage on the Outer Banks. Residents have been in the dark since Thursday morning, when a construction crew working on the new Bonner Bridge inadvertently cut a transmission cable. Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Thursday evening for the communities, and authorities asked all non-residents to leave the islands by noon on Friday. Laura Ertle, a spokeswoman for Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative, said employees of the Roanoke, Virginia-based company that erected the cable on the original Bonner Bridge in 1995 would dig up the cable

A 2005 sketch of the Manhattan skyline drawn and autographed by President Donald Trump sold for $29,184 Wednesday. (Photo/Tweet) The sketch was made by Trump for a September 2005 charity event fighting against illiteracy. Coincidentally, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain also attended the same fundraiser, The New York Times reported Friday. The sketch, auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions, features Trump Tower at the center. The relatively basic rendering includes a simple rendering of the skyline with his iconic signature signed in gold. “Light smudge and abrasion to right side, otherwise near fine condition,” the auction house said in its

It’s a rather dismal time in American politics. There’s been lots of fighting, drama, and tweeting of late. Over the past few months, we’ve seen disappointed hopes, angry passions, and forlorn despair all rise to the surface. On the cultural front, we’ve experienced a good deal of unrest and volatility, fragmentation and decay. But there’s hope, friends. From across the pond, the British have delivered unto us the most delightful “reality TV” show an Anglophile could ever ask for. It features people being nice to each other, the punniest hosts on television, two judges talking about “soggy bottoms,” and the

President Trump´s sweep of the Rust Belt last November caught the Acela corridor off guard, inducing months of rumination from people with elite diplomas in coastal cities hoping to diagnose the Democratic Party´s decline in its historical strongholds. One would be hard pressed to find a congressional district more representative of this shift than the district of Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., which covers rural parts of central and northern Wisconsin. From 1969 until 2010, the district re-elected Democrat David Obey time after time to represent its interests in Washington. But a changing economy has hit the district hard, shuttering paper

The Treasury Department is ending an ineffective Obama program that promised to help millions of Americans save for retirement, the government announced Friday. Treasury announced the myRA program would be phased out, after costing taxpayers $70 million though few Americans used the program. Former president Barack Obama used his 2014 State of the Union address to launch the myRA program, with a promise to "help millions" to save for retirement. Two years later, only 20,000 had signed up. "The myRA program was created to help low to middle income earners start saving for retirement," said Jovita Carranza, U.S. Treasurer. On Wednesday night, I received a phone call from Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director. He wasn’t happy. Earlier in the night, I’d tweeted, citing a “senior White House official,” that Scaramucci was having dinner at the White House with President Trump, the First Lady, Sean Hannity, and the former Fox News executive Bill Shine. It was an interesting group, and raised some questions. Was Trump getting strategic advice from Hannity? Was he considering hiring Shine? But Scaramucci had his own question—for me. “Who leaked that to you?” he asked. I said I couldn’t give him that information.

President Trump responded to the Senate Republican´s inability to pass a skinny version of Obamacare´s repeal the only way he knows how: Twitter. (Tweet) Senate Republicans weren´t able to muster enough votes to pass their skinny repeal of Obamacare. Senators voted 49-51 shortly before 2:00 a.m. Friday morning. Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) cast a surprise "no" vote. He was joined by GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine). The bill, titled the Health Care Freedom Act, would have repealed the individual insurance mandate. It would also have repealed the employer mandate for eight years.

President Donald Trump’s Wednesday announcement on Twitter that transgender men and women will not be allowed to serve in the military “in any capacity” was not a complete surprise: Last month, Defense Secretary James Mattis announced that the military was hitting the pause button on an Obama-era plan to welcome openly transgender people into the military. But the announcement was a legal land mine. The Trump administration may soon learn that singling out a class of people for exclusion violates the constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law. President Donald Trump has been attacking his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, daily. There have been brutal attacks on Twitter, in media interviews, and during speeches. Conventional wisdom is that Trump is getting ready to fire Sessions or hoping Sessions resigns. Conventional wisdom also assured everyone that Hillary Clinton would win in a landslide, the only question being by how large a margin. Trump´s complaint is that his attorney general should not have recused himself from the Russia hacking hoax and that he is dragging his feet on long overdue investigations and prosecutions: Deep State leaks; unmasking; DNC and Clinton collusion
