Justice Kennedy, tear down this wall
Washington Examiner [DC], by Editorial

Battles over religious liberty sometimes resemble a schoolyard brawl, with adversaries hurling childish taunts at one another and hulking bullies preying on smaller, weaker opponents — think of the Obama administration´s vicious and unrelenting attacks on the Little Sisters of the Poor. It´s appropriate, then, that an important religious liberty case now before the US Supreme Court should center arguments over funding for the resurfacing of a schoolyard playground. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Comer. This story began in 2012, when the Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Mo, which operates daycare and pre-school facilities,

Amazing (not) how publicly funded universities can make allowances for Muslim students using tax dollars to build or modify existing rooms to provide these Muslim students their own prayer rooms.

I´m making a guess her but I´ll be a Muslim school applied for this same grant and received it with no problem.

If we´re gong to have this wall of separation, then it had better apply to all religions - not just the one that this country was founded on.

There are two chances.
Slim: Kennedy will waffle.
None: Kennedy will hold with the liberals.

It depends on what Kennedy´s PR guy tells him.

If there´s one thing that members of the American left believe as an article of unshakable faith, it´s that they constitute the country´s true silent majority. You can hear a profession of this faith every time a mainstream Democrat disappoints at the ballot box: "If only socialist Bernie Sanders had been the nominee in 2016, he would have beaten Donald Trump." "If only the corrupt, plutocratic, consultant-heavy, and overly cautious DNC had run true progressives in this year´s special elections instead of civility-mongering centrists, the party could have capitalized on the self-evident awfulness of the GOP." More sophisticated analysts might concede that

The rapid pace of change in American life does not exempt politics. Witness how fast Democrats are cycling through scapegoats. First came Hillary Clinton. When she emerged to gripe about all the reasons she lost last year, except herself, party activists told her to be quiet and go away. She has, for now. Next came Nancy Pelosi. When Republicans won four contested special elections for House seats, disgruntled Dems turned their fire on their minority leader, telling Pelosi it was time to get out of the way. She refuses, for now. And now comes Barack Obama. The former president, shredding what was left

Yesterday’s Washington Post carried the Russia story of the day. Post reporters Greg Miller, Ellen Nakashima and Adam Entous purport to deliver the goods on “Obama’s secret struggle to punish Russia for Putin’s election assault.” It’s a long, long story that is of interest from a variety of perspectives. The Post purports to give us the inside story on the collection of intelligence on Russian interference in the presidential election and serve up the apologetics explaining the Obama administration’s passive response. Based on highly classified intelligence related to the Post, the CIA discovered Russian interference in the election while it was

There is a place for contempt in our public discourse. We should have contempt for a regime in North Korea that brutalized a young American student named Otto Warmbier. We should have contempt for a regime in Syria that uses poison gas to massacre innocent men, women and children. We should have contempt for Islamic State terrorists who behead Americans, burn people alive in cages and systematically rape Yazidi girls. But we should not have contempt for each other. Yet, we do. Our politics today is descending into a bitter spiral of contempt. And we saw the consequences in the

America moved a half-step closer to replacing ObamaCare this week with Sen. Mitch McConnell’s release of his draft reform bill. Senate Republicans need to work out their differences quickly and keep the ball moving. Congress has a ton on its plate, and the GOP can’t afford to bog down. Like the one that passed the House, the bill is just a start on moving beyond ObamaCare. It would repeal the earlier law’s taxes and individual and employer mandates and revamp its subsidies into tax credits. And also slowly begin reforming Medicaid, one of the entitlement programs that collectively are on

Aron Nimzowitsch, among the chess greats of his day, didn’t take well to losing badly. Knowing that he was about to be beaten by an inferior opponent in a 1925 tournament, he jumped on the table and yelled, “Against this idiot I have to lose?” Democrats must know the feeling. The number of refugees who entered the U.S. during President Trump’s first three months compared to the last months of President Obama’s term was cut nearly in half, according to statistics released Friday by the Department of Homeland Security. According to the statistics, a total of 13,000 refugees were admitted to the U.S. in the past three months, compared to 25,000 under Obama, The Los Angeles Times reported. The most popular countries of origins remained the same: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syria, Iraq, Somalia and Myanmar. Obama set the ceiling of 110,000 refugee arrivals across the U.S. President Trump

Freighter Was On Autopilot

The deadly collision between a U.S. destroyer and a container ship June 17 took place while the freighter was on autopilot, according to Navy officials. The Philippines-flagged cargo ship ACX Crystal was under control of a computerized navigation system that was steering and guiding the container vessel, according to officials familiar with preliminary results of an ongoing Navy investigation. Investigators so far found no evidence the collision was deliberate. Nevertheless, an accident during computerized navigation raises the possibility the container ship´s computer system could have been hacked and the ship deliberately steered into the USS Fitzgerald, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. The Highlander Research and Education Center is one of the unsung mileposts of the struggle for civil rights. People like Rosa Parks, John Lewis, and Ralph Abernathy refined their organizing skills at Highlander. It was there, in 1957, that a young Martin Luther King Jr. first heard Pete Seeger sing “We Shall Overcome.” On his way to the airport after the anniversary of what was then known as the Highlander Folk School, King proclaimed, “There’s something about that song that haunts you.” Highlander has since moved farther east, but its mission remains the same. The end of the Supreme Court term looms, and with it the prospect — the terrifying prospect — of a retirement. Specifically, the retirement of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who will turn 81 next month and is the longest-serving current justice, named to the high court almost 30 years ago. So if Kennedy is inclined to retire, it is hard to begrudge him that choice. But his departure would be terrible for the court and terrible for the country. It could not come at a worse time. Any court vacancy these days, under a president of either party, triggers a battle

A feminist magazine is calling on all white women to “do their part to prevent white supremacy” and abort their white babies. This is sick beyond words. The feminist Medusa Magazine reported: In a progressive society, it is often white families that stand in the way of equality and justice. Systemic white supremacy depends, first and foremost, on the white family unit. When white conquerors forcefully penetrated the indigenous, egalitarian homeland of the Native peoples of America, they were quick to replicate their white societies, initiating their parasitism by establishing white plantations, headed by white fathers, submissive white mothers, and,

Ramadan will come to an end this weekend with the major Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, and thus far President Donald Trump’s recognition of Islam’s holiest month has been limited to a statement that almost exclusively addressed violence and terrorism. Breaking with a tradition that dates back more than 20 years, to Bill Clinton’s administration, the White House will not be hosting an iftar—the meal Muslims consume to break their fast—in 2017.

Or, I should say, “14 lawyers and counting.” According to the press spokesman for special counsel Robert Mueller—yeah, he’s got a press spokesman, too—there are “several more in the pipeline.” Concededly, none of Mueller’s recruits requires Senate confirmation, as do Justice Department officials—notwithstanding that the former may end up playing a far more consequential role in the fate of the Trump administration.
