The Irish Republican Socialist party and Sinn Fein still dream of a unified Irish republic. The Catalan Solidarity for Independence coalition would see the Estelada flag raised over an independent Estat Català, and there are independence-minded movements as far-flung as the western Sahara. The Uhuru Movement is a kind of separatist movement standing on its head, looking to transcend national borders (with their colonial histories) and unite African people in a single African identity. The United States has the Texas Nationalist Movement hoping to restore the Republic of Texas, and somewhere out there is a very committed fellow who believes

How about the other 49 states declaring independence from California? Of course there will be refugees from the "interior" where surprise surprise many genuine patriot Americans live. We´ll be so busy assimilating them we´ll need to cut off Syrians and Somalis, aww. And of course we´ll need a bigger wall but count me in.

It appears that this farce is going to get more blog, article, and newsprint, but in the end will go nowhere. It makes much more sense for Kalifornia to split into the Coastal Liberal Creepozoid Party, and the more conservative inland. Also, El Rushbo nailed it the other day. The democRATS will never let FIFTY electoral votes, 50 automatic democRAT electoral votes, leave the USA.

Everyone said Trump was impossible too. I think this should be encouraged. The national flag could be a pair of raggedy 30 inch waist jeans with a grey pony tail tassel. Income tax rate would be 100%, with all non-white and non-producers getting a guaranteed income for life. There could be border guards that check you for drugs, and if you dont have any they´d give you some.
Any weird sport performed in spandex would land one a national hero medal. Sunglasses would be mandatory 24 hours a day and everyone would be required to identify as a trans-something.

I don´t know why columnists waste time writing about this farce. California isn´t going anywhere for the simple fact the US government won´t allow it to go anywhere. The USA is not going to voluntarily give up 2/3 of its western coastline regardless of what Californians want. That would be strategic suicide for the country. Apart from that the military has numerous critically important military bases located throughout the state. Does anyone seriously think that the Feds will just walk away from those because a bunch of nutjobs are unhappy with the current state of affairs? The whole thing is just ridiculous and not worthy of attention.

I don´t think that this has any legs. I´m a life long Californian, and not only do I want to stay in the U.S., everybody I know wants to stay as well. If there was to be a vote, I doubt that more than 20% of the population would vote to leave. Despite our reputation, Californian is filled with normal, non flaky citizens who work at jobs, raise their families, pay their taxes, and vote like regular citizens. Don´t listen to the few leftist loudmouths who want to leave the U.S.

While California cannot secede, there is precedent for a portion of a state to break away and form a new one. West Virginia split from Virginia, and Maine was once part of Massachusetts. And the Dakota Territory somehow split to form two sparsely populated states.

Here’s something to consider if you’re a disgruntled conservative angry about the Senate’s Obamacare replacement bill: Susan B. Anthony was a vehement opponent of the 15th Amendment. That’s the amendment which reads, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Why would this genuine icon of feminism (not to be confused with hustlers like Hillary Clinton) object to such a huge leap forward for democracy and justice? She believed it didn’t go far enough. What

Don’t make too much of the news that Sen. Bernie Sanders and his wife Jill have lawyered up: It’s just what you have to do when you’re facing an FBI investigation. That is, retaining private counsel is obligatory even if you truly have done absolutely nothing wrong. On the other hand, real questions do surround Jill Sanders’ actions as president of now-closed Burlington College. Back in 2010, Sanders arranged a $10 million loan for the school to buy 32 acres of lakefront property. At issue is whether she falsely inflated the number of donors who’d promised to help cover the loan payments. The

I’ve been talking about the importance of protecting against voting-machine hacks since 2002. And now, finally, people are starting to take me seriously. The move to paperless voting started in response to the Florida “hanging chad” fiasco in the 2000 presidential election. Some people (like me) thought this was a mistake, but such concerns were often dismissed. Now, apparently, you can’t be paranoid enough. As Politico’s Bob King noted, while 10 years ago critics of paperless voting were called paranoid, now both parties are worried. It remains true that there is no actual evidence that a single vote was changed by hackers

It was a different time, a crazy time, all those…days ago…way back at the end of last week. Like I said, it was a different time. After less than two weeks, that time is done and the political left is back at their lying, hateful rhetoric about how Republicans are hoping to kill as many Americans as possible. It

Third time might be a charm for US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who wed his Scottish actress fiancee Louise Linton in front of President Trump and the First Lady at a lavish, star-studded ceremony in Washington, DC on Saturday. It´s the third marriage for ex-banker Mnuchin, 54, who is reportedly worth upwards of $300 million, and the second marriage for Linton, 36, an Edinburgh-born actress who has appeared in several Hollywood films. She was married to Hollywood lawyer Ronald Richards. They divorced in 2009. The pair exchanged vows on Saturday evening at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium on the National Mall. The end of the Supreme Court term looms, and with it the prospect — the terrifying prospect — of a retirement. Specifically, the retirement of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who will turn 81 next month and is the longest-serving current justice, named to the high court almost 30 years ago. So if Kennedy is inclined to retire, it is hard to begrudge him that choice. But his departure would be terrible for the court and terrible for the country. It could not come at a worse time. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This August, the U.S. will experience its first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in 99 years. Total solar eclipses occur every year or two or three, often in the middle of nowhere like the South Pacific or Antarctic. What makes this one so special - at least for Americans - is that it will cut diagonally across the entire United States. The path of totality on Aug. 21 - where day briefly becomes night - will pass over Oregon, continuing through the heartland all the way to Charleston, South Carolina. Those on the outskirts - all the way into

Washington -Nancy Pelosi is sending a defiant message to House Democrats who are grumbling about her leadership: Come at me. But while Pelosi´s critics are increasingly vocal, they have not yet answered critical questions about who would fill her leadership and fundraising roles if they were to mount a serious challenge for the perch atop the party Pelosi has held since 2002. Nor have they identified a challenger. At least, not yet. A dozen House Democrats huddled in the office of New York Rep. So I’ve been wondering: Why on earth does a prosecutor, brought in to investigate a case in which there is no apparent crime, need a staff of 14 lawyers? Or, I should say, “14 lawyers and counting.” According to the press spokesman for special counsel Robert Mueller—yeah, he’s got a press spokesman, too—there are “several more in the pipeline.” Concededly, none of Mueller’s recruits requires Senate confirmation, as do Justice Department officials—notwithstanding that the former may end up playing a far more consequential role in the fate of the Trump administration. A feminist magazine is calling on all white women to “do their part to prevent white supremacy” and abort their white babies. This is sick beyond words. The feminist Medusa Magazine reported: In a progressive society, it is often white families that stand in the way of equality and justice. Systemic white supremacy depends, first and foremost, on the white family unit. When white conquerors forcefully penetrated the indigenous, egalitarian homeland of the Native peoples of America, they were quick to replicate their white societies, initiating their parasitism by establishing white plantations, headed by white fathers, submissive white mothers, and,
