US Pays 22.1% of NATO Budget;
Germany 14.7%; 13 Allies
Pay Less Than 1%

While President Trump’s weekend Twitter assertion that “Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO” is disputed by experts – and by Berlin – it draws attention to the fact that Germany, like the majority of the 28 members of the alliance, has yet to meet a NATO-agreed commitment to devote two percent of GDP to defense spending. At the same time, a closer look at NATO funding also underlines that – as is the case with the United Nations – the U.S. contributes more than one-fifth of the direct, collective funding that keeps NATO’s military and civilian operations on track. Germany can split hairs over President Trump’s rhetoric, but the reality remains the same. They are not covering their share. Period.

Read the article. That simply isn´t true. Germany is paying more than a lot of other countries for NATO including larger countries. I am not a fan of Germany and agree that they haven´t yet met their defense spending goal of 2%. Some of the countries paying very little of NATO funding are either very small countries- Luxembourg- or poor countries- Albania, Romania, etc. What I think is remarkable that some of the less prosperous countries are paying quite a lot and some are meeting their defense budget commitments even with precarious economies- i.e. Greece. Both Poland and Estonia are less prosperous countries than many of the Western European countries and they are both doing a lot with defense and Poland also doing quite a lot with NATO spending.

Nice try #2. If they agreed on 2% of GDP decades ago, the fact that others pay less is immaterial. Don´t worry! Someday the media might catch President Trump in a lie.

We also have bases, attachments and other assets that are not under the NATO budget. It´s probably closer to 30% to Germany´s 12%.
Their 2% should be closer to 7%.

Do not get hung up on semantics. Germany has not kept its part of the NATO agreement. To say that they have paid a lot or somesuch is obfuscation. They are to pay 2% of the GDP. They are a wealthy country. They have not paid their agreed share. What other countries have not paid is a separate issue. The NATO agreement was not set up to be weakened by relativism.

Saying that any country contributed X percent to the whole budget is an absolutely meaningless statistic, intended to obfuscate the issue.

The only valid measure is whether they are paying 2% of their GDP. If they pay 80% of the whole thing and are not meeting the 2%, they are shirking. If they pay .0005% of the whole and (because they are small and/or poor) and are meeting the 2% of GDP, then they are good.

False comparison of the percent of whole, intended to muddy the waters. Don´t fall for it.

To determine how much of the burden we are carrying, you have to sum up all the shortfall, for all the years gone by, and apply interest. It would be staggering.

That goes for the UN as well, and it isn´t just Germany that is stiffing us.

SEATTLE — Millions of gallons of raw sewage and untreated runoff have poured into the United States´ second-largest estuary since a massive sewage treatment plant experienced equipment failures that forced it to stop fully treating Seattle´s waste. The county-run facility has been hobbling along at about half-capacity since the Feb. 9 electrical failure resulted in catastrophic flooding that damaged an underground network of pumps, motors, electric panels and other gear. The sewage treatment plant — Washington state´s largest — is only partially treating dirty water that goes down Seattle toilets and washes off roofs and roads before discharging it into Puget Sound.

Democrats and “progressives” who gathered at a town hall in the San Francisco district of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Friday pressed her to revive the “single-payer” option for national health care — i.e. a government-run system. The pressure came after Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, at the urging of President Donald Trump, withdrew the American Health Care Act, the House Republican leaders’ effort to replace Obamacare. The measure lacked the 218 necessary votes. Local public radio station KQED reported: “I extend my hand to the president if he wants to improve the Affordable Care Act,” Pelosi told a crowd

I have a friend who is a retired public school teacher. She is very likeable and in some areas an independent thinker. One day in conversation she brought up the terrible poverty and near-anarchy that prevails just on the other side of America’s southern border. It quickly became clear that she believed America was at fault, that America’s prosperity was somehow the cause of Mexico’s problems. When I asked her what the solution might be, she replied without hesitation that we should get rid of that border, and not stop there but get rid of all borders. Then, she said,

Broken promises are as old as politics itself, and there are many famous examples of them in modern history. President George H.W. Bush´s "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge comes immediately to mind, as does President Bill Clinton reneging on his middle-class tax cut, and President Barack Obama never closing Guantanamo Bay. But in each of those cases, those were promises that were made in a given campaign by a given politician. The promise of Obamacare repeal is much different.
