An unarmed Minuteman 3 missile, with an effective range of 8,000 miles, was launched from a silo at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 12.02am. The missile struck a target approximately 4,200 miles away on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, military chiefs said. Pyongyang test-fired a ballistic weapon on Saturday despite warnings from the US that failure to curb its nuclear and rocket trials could lead to ´catastrophic consequences´. The missile travelled 30 miles before crashing down on an inland part of North Korea. But it has since been claimed that Kim Jong-un´s spooked officials deliberately exploded the KN-17 device shortly after launch fearing it had been fired towards Russia by accident. Caroline Kennedy is known for her classic sense of style and fashionable know-how, so it came as quite a shock to see the diplomat take to the red carpet at this year´s Met Gala in a highly unflattering - and rather bizarre - dress that quite closely resembled an antique lampshade. The 59-year-old, a close friend of Met Gala chair Anna Wintour, arrived at the star-studded event in the bizarre layered gown, which featured three different floral patterns, each printed on their own poofy layer of fabric. Of the books that journalists and historians have written on the life of Barack Obama, three stand out so far. In “Barack Obama: The Story,” David Maraniss shows us who Obama is. In “Reading Obama,” James T. Kloppenberg explains how Obama thinks. In “The Bridge,” David Remnick tells us what Obama means. Now, in a probing new biography, “Rising Star,” David J. Garrow attempts to do all that, but also something more: He tells us how Obama lived, and explores the calculations he made in the decades leading up to his winning the presidency. In anticipation of May Day, the international communist holiday, the New York Times published an opinion piece celebrating the American communists of the twentieth century, arguing that communism – an ideology that has killed 100 million people – gave Americans a “sense of one’s own humanity.” The column, titled, “When Communism Inspired Americans,” lionizes communism as a religion with a “founding myth” that helped the “educated middle class” feel relevant in national politics. The author, Vivian Gornick, quotes her mother expressing gratitude for communists and crediting them with America’s thriving republic. Save for a passing reference to the Soviet Union, however,

“Rising Star,” the voluminous 1,460-page biography of Barack Obama by David J. Garrow, is a dreary slog of a read: a bloated, tedious and — given its highly intemperate epilogue — ill-considered book that is in desperate need of editing, and way more exhausting than exhaustive. Many of the more revealing moments in this volume will be familiar to readers of Obama’s own memoir, “Dreams From My Father”; a host of earlier books about Obama and his family; and myriad profiles of the former president that have appeared in newspapers and magazines over the years.
