U.S. officials meet asylum

U.S. officials began taking fingerprints of asylum seekers in an Australian-run camp on the Pacific island of Nauru on Monday, signaling that vetting of applicants for resettlement in what U.S. President Donald Trump called a "dumb deal" has restarted. Australia agreed with former U.S. President Barack Obama late last year for the United States to resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers held in much criticized processing camps on Papua New Guinea and Nauru. In return, Australia would resettle refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Trump labeled the agreement a "dumb deal" in a Tweet, but said he would stand by it. Interviews

Does Trump Have a Strategy

The Wall Street Journal is delighted to hear Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s tough words on North Korea and China. “Let me be very clear: The policy of strategic patience has ended,” Mr. Tillerson said, referring to the Obama Administration policy of waiting for North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions or collapse. A day earlier he criticized “20 years” of a “failed approach” to the North’s nuclear ambitions. I, too, appreciate the secretary of state’s candor. But straight talk isn’t going to be enough. As the Journal concedes, He and President Trump are trying to persuade China that the new

The Washington Post detailed the House GOP’s fight over the ObamaCare repeal and replacement plan this week, rounding up the dramatic details of leadership’s fight to win support for the measure. At one point, the paper said, House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) got down on one knee to plead with Rep. Don Young of Alaska – the longest-serving Republican in Congress -- to support the bill. (He was unsuccessful.) The moments highlighted by the Post during the Republican conference negotiations show what a tough battle Ryan and his deputies faced in whipping the vote. But they also show the fierce support

President Trump is reportedly creating a new White House innovation office that will be led by his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. The White House Office of American Innovation will be announced Monday, the Washington Post reported, and will report directly to the president. The idea is to help meet some of the goals President Trump pledged to accomplish during his campaign, such as working to help with veteran care and fight opioid addiction. The new office, which is described in the Post report as a “SWAT team” to fix the federal bureaucracy, is working with tech giants such

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus dismissed speculation Sunday that President Trump wants to oust House Speaker Paul D. Ryan over the failure to pass a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. “No, he doesn’t,” Mr. Priebus insisted on “Fox News Sunday.” The speculation about the president’s dissatisfaction with the speaker mounted after Mr. Trump urged his Twitter followers to watch Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro’s program on Saturday, in which she opened the show with a call for the removal of Mr. Ryan. “I think it was more coincidental,” said Mr. Priebus. “There was no pre-planning here.”

It was a careful choice of words, Bernard Lewis being nothing if not careful. In 2004, the West audibly gasped when its preeminent scholar of Islam famously told the German newspaper Die Welt,“Europe will be Islamic by the end of the century,” if not sooner. Listen carefully. He did not say that Muslims will be the majority population in what is still recognizably Europe. No, Professor Lewis said “Europe will be Islamic.” We are not talking about Muslims here. We are talking about Islam. Lots of individual Muslims desire peaceful coexistence, even assimilation. But Islam’s aim is to prevail. So,

Republicans Ryan and Trump after announcing the cancellation, sounded as if efforts to fulfill campaign promises to repeal and replace the 2010 health care law were essentially finished. Donald Trump crowed for months he would strike a "terrific" deal on health care. His ambitions ended in a brief phone call Friday afternoon, in which Speaker Paul Ryan told him the truth: He was nowhere close. The businessman president, who sold himself to tens of millions of disillusioned voters last year as the only outsider who could tame a broken capital, ended his first confrontation with lawmakers overmatched, outmaneuvered and ultimately empty-handed. “We learned a lot about some very arcane rules,” Trump said in the Oval Office soon after the defeat of his effort to undo President Obama’s

President Trump and his advisers ought to study the collapse of the American Health Care Act. It´s a case study in how Beltway institutions—the so-called Swamp Trump pledged to drain—can herd a president and his party toward unpopular legislation and political defeat. Begin with this question: Why the rush to repeal and replace Obamacare? Yes, repealing the law has been a Republican priority since 2010. But Democrats had spent decades laying the groundwork for universal health care before finding themselves in control of the government in 2009. And even then, it took a year for the Affordable Care Act to

I fear the conservatives may have erred. Let´s accept that Paul Ryan´s healthcare bill wasn´t optimal. If the Congressional Budget Office was anywhere close to correct in its original estimations, the bill would have cut government spending by $12.5 trillion, cut taxes by $900 million, repealed Obamacare´s tax increases, and instituted the largest entitlement reform in the last thirty years. But yes, it´s true, it wasn´t full repeal. Indeed, as long as insurance companies are required to cover pre-existing conditions, government healthcare is with us, and the bill would not have changed that. And it is certainly fair to doubt whether

The Ryan American Healthcare Bill is a piece of moderate GOP trash that Mr. Ryan owns and has been trying and failing miserably to sell as the long-promised Republican repeal and replacement of Obamacare. Former President Barack Obama´s journey to French Polynesia was undertaken so he could write his memoir. The Washington Post reported Sunday that Obama is writing his White House memoir during his extended stay at the eco-friendly resort in French Polynesia´s atoll of Tetiaroa. Bidding for the former president and first lady Michelle Obama´s book rights surpassed $60 million.

Broken promises are as old as politics itself, and there are many famous examples of them in modern history. President George H.W. Bush´s "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge comes immediately to mind, as does President Bill Clinton reneging on his middle-class tax cut, and President Barack Obama never closing Guantanamo Bay. But in each of those cases, those were promises that were made in a given campaign by a given politician. The promise of Obamacare repeal is much different. Republicans ran on repealing and replacing Obamacare for seven years, over the course of four election cycles. They won the

Brexit was caused in part by climate change, former US Vice-President Al Gore has said, warning that extreme weather is creating political instability “the world will find extremely difficult to deal with”. Mr Gore, speaking at an event in which he previewed a sequel to his landmark 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, said the “principal” cause of the Syrian Civil War had been the worst drought in 900 years, which forced 1.5 million people to move from the countryside to the cities. It is hard to overestimate the damage the Freedom Caucus has done to the fledgling presidency of Donald Trump, and to the country. By blocking the American Health Care Act of 2017, the conservative group has guaranteed that Americans will struggle forward under the burden of Obamacare. In the next few months insurers will announce their premium hikes for the coming year; chances are, given the continuing withdrawal of major companies from the marketplaces and the ongoing failure of the bill to attract enough young and healthy participants, the new rates will not be pretty. Last year premiums went up

The first cocktail party at Barack Obama’s new office last month was certainly more casual than any he had hosted in recent years. The wine bore a random assortment of labels, as if assembled potluck-style. The self-serve appetizers were set out in the narrow hallway. The host, tieless, eschewed formal remarks, as a few dozen of his old administration officials — Joe Biden and former chief of staff Denis McDonough, as well as more junior ones — mingled in a minimalist wood-paneled suite that could be mistaken for a boutique law firm. “It was a bit of a shock to
