Would YOU let a homeless person live
in your backyard? Portland offers
residents free tiny homes if they rent
it to families who are on the street

Faced with an intractable homeless problem, officials in Portland are thinking inside the box. A handful of homeless families will soon move into tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners. (Snip) The project, called A Place for You, is believed to be the first in the nation to recruit stable residents to address a homeless crisis that´s gotten so bad the city last year declared a state of emergency and made it legal to sleep on the street. Portland has an affordable rental shortage of 24,000 units and nearly 4,000 people sleep on the street, in a

Comments:
Total immersion liberalism: city is spending $91,250 each on 200-square-foot sheds in which to house the homeless in people´s backyards. Just picture the ill will this will generate among neighbors, and the immediate threat of violence and destroyed property for the do-gooders who agree to such a thing.

Then the stupid city will hire people to clean up the messes left in the backyards by these slobs. Ever see ANY PLACE left clean by the wonderful lefties?

I´ll bet that, if you´re a common taxpaying Portland citizen who wants to erect a "tiny house" in your backyard for your own families´ use, the zoning enforcement Nazis would tell you "He11 NOOOOO" in a heartbeat.

This might be a good trend. Let a few of these bleeding-heart leftists take some street people in. After a few months of interactions with them, the scales will fall from their eyes, and they just might get some sense.

FTA: "Under the pilot program taking effect this summer, the homeowners will take over the heated, fully plumbed tiny houses in five years and can use them for rental income."

"Renters are an asset to any community," said no one ever. Added benefit of the program will be reduced property values for homeowners, and thus reduced property tax revenues to the city. Potheads are not good at thinking too far into the future.

A bus ticket to a place with "Affordable Housing" would work better.

But this isn´t about housing, it´s about the mentally ill, substance abusers, and layabouts that he rest of us are supposed to subsidize.

In the words of Howie Carr, Anything you subsidize, you get more of.

To answer the headline´s question.... yes, yes I would.

With the following provisions:
The person in question isnt a criminal and doesnt have a mental incapacitation.

The person must want to improve their position in life through their own hard work and perseverance.

The living situation must be temporary

I must have the right to easily, and at no personal cost, evict said person from the property for a multitude of reasons that would be detailed in a rental agreement.

My provisions, restrictions and renter responsibilities would however guarantee that city would never allow it.

Statistically, about 25% of homeless are mentally ill and a little less than half are either mentally ill or are substance abusers. (Grifter, we got no stats for...)

How long before this becomes a serious, life-threatening problem for these idiots? Both of these can be dangerous situations.

And are these really covered with clear plastic, like in the photos? That should be interesting.

- - a drug-addicted sex pervert OR a completely amoral slut who had four children by four different men by the time she was 18?

It´s a tough choice. I´ll just leave it up to the Portland bureaucracy to choose someone for me.

Absolutely not. The liability issues could be enormous.

We know welfare simply does NOT work yet liberals keep trying to repackage it and sell it to up again.

As pointed out by others. About half of homeless are mentally ill/substance abusers. Want to bet that the other half won´t be homeless for more than a year or two. They will work their way out of poverty. We used to institutionalize the people who can´t take care of themselves. Let´s stop pretending that these people can be rehabilitated or that it is "societies fault" that they are like this. They are sick or have weak personalities and yes, we may have to warehouse them because they are not fixable. But stop with the guilt. Let´s find a way to efficiently help the intractable poor but without the silliness.

Welfare does work because the beneficiaries don´t have to be bothered with working. Work is for suckers, to paraphrase Seinfeld´s Kramer. Welfare means free housing, food, health & psychiatric care, legal defense and more.

Portland´s feed & care for the homeless policies result in more of them, not less. The almost universal comment of all soup kitchens is "We never knew there were so many homeless people in our parish/town/city". There have to be unused military bases where these sad people can be housed and put to work raising their own food and maintaining their barracks. But that´s also for suckers, not them.

And after 5 years, who will be evicting them? Won´t they have a right to live there in these tiny houses for as long as they desire thus becoming the renters that wouldn´t leave horror show? This is a pant load solution and of course it´s democrats who think of it (most likely female). The home owners are giving up the rights to their property for a social experiment. What will happen to their insurance rates if they agree to do this? There are too many legal implications.

Here´s an idea: Portland residents should register their homes so that when they leave their homes for more 2 days, homeless families could be housed there. Would reduce white guilt when homeowners are enjoying themselves on vacays or weekends in the mountains. Upon their return, homeowners would politely ask these homeless guests to vacate the premises. If these squatters refuse, the homeowners could move into the backyard shack until their case moves slowly through the judicial system.

They will make adorable little meth labs.

I suspect the addition of a "rental unit" will result in increased property taxes for the homeowner.

I´m also guessing the dwelling will either need to be repaired or torn down (at homeowner expense) after 5 years to meet "code".

Opened ended black-hole of liability.

They are simply encouraging more "homeless" people to show up. The liberal Democrats who run those cities don´t care, they just facilitate the "homeless" voting for them, guaranteeing that those liberal Democrats remain in permanent political power, and continue to squeeze as much money as possible from whatever taxpayers remain in those socialist utopias.

Can you imagine the deterated condition that the insides of those tiny houses will be in when they turn them over to the "do-gooder" homeowners in five years? Chances are the city fathers will then condem the tiny houses, and charge the "do-gooder" homeowners to demolish and remove them.

Is this from the Onion? They look like small chicken coops! I can see it now; the homeowner wants the "homeless" people to move out for some legitimate reason or the supposed rental time is up. The homeless persons say no and go to a liberal Portland judge and the judge says "no you can´t make these needy people leave!"

Portland is a disaster. A huge number of houses now in low-land portions of Portland are rentals, so some house landlords who add these outhouses to their rental home backyards may see a benefit. Supposedly they´ll be hooked into the sewer, but what about garbage, food, transportation, maintenance, and every other regular function that normal residents deal with but homeless occupants can´t or won´t. What great neighbors they will make.

I live across the river in Washington and visit Portland as little as possible; when I visit the areas where this kind of idea is targeted, the commercial streets nearby are buzzing with tiny restaurants, tattoo and marijuana shops, and various non-english speaking specialty stores. Money is being exchanged to keep this little economy going and it´s not from working at factories or offices. Huge percentage of people on food stamps here; it´s essentially a high-level ghetto where one or two people rent a house, then sub-let to two or three additional occupants, and now added to that will be the outhouse homeless shelters.

Portland´s low-lands used to be a town of beautiful Craftsman houses lived in by owners who took great care and pride. Also used to be very religious, primarily Catholic. It´ a liberal hell-hole where newly discovered victims are categorized in 87 different ways by very liberal politicians enabling their voting block in ways only graduates of failed educational systems could conceive. The population of low-land Portland doesn´t even know why they are called snowflakes. But they do know when their EBT cards are renewed each month.

There are a number of closed military installations across the country. Ft. McClellan, AL and Ft. Chaffee, AR, come immediately to mind.
Move these "homeless" folks to the closed installations, require them to rehab the old barracks and let them live there--work for rent. The states probably won´t care for it unless gov´t $$$ follow the homeless. Better than those tiny, expensive "chicken coops" in peoples´ back yards.
