De Blasio’s Escape
City Journal, by Bob McManus

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara shot an arrow into the air, but it didn’t land anywhere near Bill de Blasio. The same can be said for Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance, who concedes that New York’s mayor may have twisted campaign-finance laws into a pretzel, but that’s okay, because his lawyer said so. So ends a year-long, two-pronged investigation of de Blasio and a clutch of his top aides into practices that clearly compromised state and federal campaign-finance statutes, but did not break them—or, at least, did not break them so egregiously as to warrant prosecution, which effectively is the same

Despite outrage over cuts, federal funds

President Trump´s proposed cuts to the popular "Meals on Wheels" program have prompted dire warnings -- but they appear to ignore the fact that only a fraction of the program´s budget comes from the government. A glance at the program´s 2015 financial statement shows the program brought in just over $7.5 million in funding that year, mainly from corporate and foundation grants making up $5.15 million. Government grants made up just $248,347 of the funding – or 3.3 percent of total funds. Still, Trump´s call to cut the program fed into the outrage Thursday over a multitude of reductions that the president has

"We all want progress," C.S. Lewis wrote, "but if you´re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive." This has always been one of my favorite distillations of conservatism. In principle, I still believe it, passionately. Of course, whenever you read a sentence that begins "In principle," you should consider it a kind of magical conjuring, a rain dance that calls forth a thunderclapping "but" ... But politics doesn´t work this way. For starters, we don´t walk down this road as individuals, but

Bureaucrats braved a bad week. Donald Trump proposes cuts of 29 percent to the State Department, 21 percent to the Departments of Agriculture and Labor, 18 percent to Health and Human Services, and 31 percent to the Environmental Protection Agency in a partial outline of his budget entitled “America First: A Budget Blueprint to Make America Great Again.” Defense, Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, and programs supporting school choice receive boosts. For pretty much everything else, Trump lowers the boom. “The first cut is the deepest,” Cat Stevens told us. But when the deepest cut comes as the first it indicates what a

History will record that once upon a time there was something that called itself #TheResistance, and it was President Trump’s bestest buddy because it provided him the cover to ruthlessly dismantle everything Barack Obama and Team Libfascist tried to build. Whining, virtue signaling, and figuratively choosing to die on strategically insignificant hills while dressed like lady parts; these were its methods. Yet instead of defeating him, it only made Donald Trump stronger, and helped ensure his crushing of its members’ liberal dreams. See, the problem for #TheResistance is that it is composed of stupid people who think they are smart people,

On Saturday afternoon, Preet Bharara, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York and the most celebrated federal prosecutor since Rudolph Giuliani held the same post three decades earlier, was fired by President Trump. Some 48 hours later, Michael Steinberg, a former top trader with Steven Cohen’s hedge fund, then known as SAC Capital Advisors, is ready to disclose his next act: an early-stage venture capital fund called Reciprocal Ventures, which will focus on fintech (i.e., financial technology) startups. The coincidence is almost too perfect. In 2013, the US attorney’s office charged Steinberg with insider trading, one of

Blink and you’ll miss the key line at 1:15 of the clip below — but a lot of political media didn’t miss it, as it represents the first polite pushback lately from Team Ryan that what Trump fans are calling “RyanCare” is actually TrumpCare too. With a few notable exceptions like Sean Hannity, most of Trump’s media base is all-in against the bill and nudging him to ditch it and scapegoat Ryan for it. Breitbart is openly trying to drive a wedge between Trump and the Speaker; Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, a friend of Trump’s, published an op-ed yesterday encouraging

A bitter policy fight between two of President Trump’s top aides that began with disagreements over trade policy has now expanded into other areas of the White House’s economic agenda, setting the stage for the first major showdown between senior officials of the nascent administration, the FOX Business Network has learned. The feud between Trump’s senior adviser Steven Bannon, and Gary Cohn, who heads the president´s National Economic Council, represents the first major policy rift of the Trump White House, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. People who know both men say that while they maintain a cordial,

The lawmakers disclosed multiple conversations with foreign diplomats who outlined active political meddling by the Obama administration´s State Department, including the use of taxpayer funds to support leftist causes in Macedonia, Albania, Latin America, and Africa. A portion of this State Department funding appears to have gone to organizations supported

Can you imagine Steve Bannon’s reaction upon seeing this story at Breitbart on the off-chance that he didn’t orchestrate the leak himself? The entire political establishment will assume that he ordered the hit, knowing how much antipathy Bannon has expressed towards Ryan in the past. In fact, this story from October, in which Bannon was accused of describing Ryan as “the enemy” and wanting him out as Speaker by this spring, appeared just two days after the Ryan conference call about the “Access Hollywood” tape that Breitbart’s publicizing today. On the morning after Election Day, Chuck Schumer’s phone rang. It was Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly described Schumer as his friend — which, the New York senator was at pains to clarify when we first spoke in mid-February, “isn’t quite true.” There had been the occasional favor; at Schumer’s request, Trump hosted a fund-raiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at Mar-a-Lago in 2008, and Schumer made a cameo on “The Apprentice” in 2006. Beyond that, Schumer told me: “I bump into him at meetings here and there. We never went out to dinner once. We never played golf

Six weeks into a new administration, with unified Republican government for the first time in a decade, the GOP should be busy enacting a bold reform agenda. Instead, the party is wracked by internal divisions on key issues from health care to taxes. After House Republicans released their long-awaited bill to repeal and replace Obamacare it was attacked from all sides of the GOP spectrum — with conservatives calling it “Obamacare lite” and moderates openly worrying it won’t do enough for the Obamacare Medicaid expansion population or those who will lose their Obamacare subsidies. All the emphasis seems to be on cutting. We will cut CPB, NPR, NEA. Why aren’t we talking about growing and building and knocking down barriers? Why aren’t we talking about jobs and a boom and reforming regulation and taxes so people can build and invest? Is cutting the absolute No. 1 priority right now? In a country that is, in Pope Francis’ famous characterization of the modern world, “a field hospital after battle”? Is that what the Republican party wants to lead with? Why isn’t the priority unleashing, getting past limits, pushing toward dynamism and expansion? All these old arguments—we have to

Three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit warned a House Judiciary subcommittee Thursday that their jurisdiction should not be split in two. "Circuit division would have a devastating effect on the administration of justice in the western United States," Chief Circuit Judge Sidney Thomas said in prepared remarks to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet. He said a split would "increase delay, reduce access to justice and waste taxpayer dollars." There have been attempts in both the House and Senate to split the 9th Circuit and create a new 12th Circuit.

A federal District Court judge in Maryland is considering whether he should order President Donald Trump to double the annual inflow of refugees up to 100,000 per year. Any demand by the judge that the federal government airbus an extra 50,000 migrants — including many adherents of Islam’s sharia legal system — into American neighborhoods would be an unusual intervention into government roles normally left to the elected President and Congress. If actually implemented, the judge’s plan also would be extremely expensive for Americans, because state and local communities subsidize each new immigrant with roughly $1,600 each per year for decades.
