The Great California Earthquake of 2018:
First State To Default

If only it were just an earthquake. We could then just repair some damaged roadways or condemn a couple dozen buildings, then resume our lives. (snip), if the state-run Unemployment Insurance trust gets overdrawn, as it did in California for going on its third year now, it automatically pulls an emergency loan out from the federal government to service the underfunded account. And if that is not repaid by November 10, and it defaults, then the government forces employers to pay it. They just defaulted. Our company received a mystery bill in the mail two weeks ago, explaining our new $15,000

Another reason not to have a business in CA.

At some point, California runs out of other people´s money. Might a Trump and Rebublican Congress final act like adults and say no to the temper tantrums coming out of California politicians? I doubt it with RINOs like McLame and Grahmnesty eager to do Shumer´s whims.

Hmmmmm - - seems like the La-La Land Socialists are running out of other people´s money.

What a seismic shock!

Pretty sobering stuff for the first full week of business this year. It puts into clear focus the cost of Democrat political practices.

Isn´t there a complementary side to this, though? The other states compete for companies to relocate, and most of them provide hefty tax incentives, which shift some of the state tax load away from the businesses willing to move there. Where do they recover that modicum of revenue? Does it get shifted to the individual tax earners or are there other tax sources that can be raised (without making the relocating businesses´ tax incentives a mere illusion)?

Is that where California´s default caused by Democrats´ buying votes trigger defaults in states who use different tax-revenue shenanigans to buy Republicans votes? [I expect that the business-friendly states hide much less of a revenue shell game than the business-hostile ones; but there´s got to be some degree of a similar problem with revenue recovery.]

How about starting with no government loans unless the state is in full compliance of all federal laws.
Or no government loans for less than what the feds are paying.
Or how about selling off fed assets in that state if after two years the state has not righted itself.

I am afraid that Cali is in a death spiral. The more employers are squeezed then the more they will head for the exits and take their tax base with them.

If this were a sane world, I would say too bad, they deserve bankruptcy. Unfortunately, the rest of the US will be forced to bail them out with ´temporary´ loans and other slight of hand financial largesse from the federal (taxpayer) coffers (technically bankrupt also).

Reply 7 - Posted by: doctorfixit, 1/9/2017 12:45:11 PM     (No. 11101203)

Let´s not wait for California to secede. CA, OR, and WA counties within 30 miles of the Pacific Coastshould be thrown out of the US. That would get rid of 90% of liberals west of the Mississippi.

Well you got to remember that the more illegal aliens that California imports and allows to stay there, the more federal electoral votes that California receives as Congressional districts across the country are reapportioned every ten years based upon total population figures without deducting the huge numbers of illegal aliens who are now included in those total population figures.

Why allow masses of illegal aliens in a State to give that State more representation in the Congress and thus more electoral votes then a State would otherwise have?

That only encourages liberal Democrat run States to tolerate more and more illegal aliens, as the liberal Democrat politicians recognize that the vast majority of illegal aliens are poor, generally uneducated, unskilled, and come from socialist oriented backgrounds and countries, and are thus natural liberal Democrat voters, and since nobody is looking in California, non-US citizens can easily cast fraudulent votes while they are still illegal aliens or legal permanent resident aliens by showing only a California driver´s license that all non-citizens including illegal aliens can now easily obtain.

Once legalized, especially former illegal aliens, who no doubt will become highly dependent upon big government social welfare benefits and services once qualified to receive those payouts, are sure to become lifelong Democrat voters in numbers large enough to keep the liberal Democrat and increasingly Latino based ethnic, and racially based political classes there in power indefinitely.

Reduce the federal footprint in CA to the bare minimum. Cut back operations at Quantico, Twenty-nine Palms, etc. to an absolute minimum so they don´t get that money in their economy. Cut off ALL federal funds that come for programs such as food stamps, Medicaide, etc. Encourage lawsuits from citizens and groups that will force fiscal discipline, probably could be done under the 14th Amendment, and restoration of Constitutional rights, e.g., 2nd Amendment. Do a Cloward-Piven style attack on their idiocy, but forcing compliance with the Constitution.

Hollywood was caught in the act of being itself last night: arrogant, ignorant, mentally ill, and disdainful of the American public that elected Donald Trump our next President of the United States. The occasion for this hatefest was a supposedly gala event, the Golden Globe Awards, in which the relatively few members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (many of them stringers for impecunious overseas media outlets) vote on awards that are considered precursors of the Academy Awards. The HFPA makes a lot of money off the broadcast, and rumors that individual members sell their votes are so common that

This may be the single most despicable act of media bias I have ever encountered. It took a lot of effort and art for CBS Radio to put together an early report on the Chicago torture incident that was strictly factual, yet created the impression on listeners that a group of white Trump supporters had attacked a helpless mentally challenged black man. (snip) "In the video he is choked and repeatedly called the n-word. His clothes are slashed and he is terrorized with a knife. His alleged captors repeatedly reference Donald Trump. The Democrat-Media Complex has gone all in on the propaganda campaign to convince Americans that Donald Trump’s election is illegitimate because “Russia hacked the election.” (snip)But they may have made a fatal overstep with the release of the top-secret report on Russian influence to NBC News. It is crime to share top-secret information with people who do not have the requisite security clearance. So, as a first step, Donald Trump has tweeted: "I am asking the chairs of the House and Senate committees to investigate top secret intelligence shared with NBC prior to me seeing it." In light of this, Josh

Thankfully, America is not a land of nobility, but not all noble ideas are un-American. The sense of aristocratic obligation, recognized in the French noblesse oblige or German Adel verpflichtet, is a decent, honorable idea (snip)Obama was not born into substantial wealth, but his family on both sides was well connected, providing a traditional advantage that allowed him entry into elite society. This old-style leg up then combined with modern leftist ethnic-racial privileges, overwhelmingly present in academia and the media, to advance Obama at every turn. President Obama came as a stranger, and is leaving as a stranger. The Obama presidency has been different from any other administration in the last two centuries. From the start, he has gone out of his way to defy the very essence of the American Republic, our constitutional limits on the power of any single dictatorial individual. Under Obama, the US Congress and even the Supreme Court have failed to assert their constitutional independence, presumably out of fear of this president an the accusations of racism that followed opposition to him or his policies. According to the Supreme Court, Obamacare was a

According to our leftist betters, a sickening graphic video showing a white man being brutally tortured in Chicago by four black attackers as they shout, "F--- Donald Trump! F--- white people!" isn´t evidence of racism or a hate crime. In the left´s alternate universe, Pepe the Donald Trump-loving cartoon frog is racist. Kidnapping, torturing, and scalping an innocent white man because he is white is not racist. Black-hating mass murderer Dylann Storm Roof speaks for all white people, but the newly arrested black perpetrators in Chicago, Jordan Hill, Tesfaye Cooper, Tanishia Covington, and Brittany Covington, are all rogue actors. Donald Trump has hit back at Meryl Streep calling her a ´Hillary lover´ after her Golden Globes acceptance speech took aim at the president-elect. Streep, who was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award on Sunday, slammed Trump in front of a room of stunned Hollywood stars. She said the moment he mocked and humiliated a disabled reporter ´broke her heart´ as Streep labelled it the year´s most stunning performance. Trump told the New York Times early Monday that he had not seen Streep´s speech or the Golden Globes coverage. Trump told the New York Times early Monday that he

Turning attention away from her and toward Donald J. Trump, Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes to call out the president-elect for appearing to mock a disabled New York Times reporter in 2015, and warned that a free press would need to be defended. Ms. Streep campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Some conservative commentators immediately criticized her decision to bring politics so vividly into the show. But the room roundly applauded her remarks, which included a plea to support the Committee to Protect Journalists.

A group of wealthy elites who bundled millions for Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns are having their lives “upended” because their ambassadorships at plum posts will end when Obama leaves office. The New York Times reported that President-elect Donald Trump’s transition staff has informed the State Department that politically appointed ambassadors must leave by Inauguration Day. The Times called it a “break with precedent” to remove political ambassadors, many of whom received their posts by fundraising for Barack Obama, on schedule by Jan. 20. The new administration is “declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods,” the Times wrote, referencing

DONALD Trump’s plans to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem is a “declaration of war on Muslims”, a close aide of Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has declared. Donald Trump wants to overturn years of government policy and move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Mr Trump’s advisors say the move is a “priority” for the president-elect after his inauguration later this month. But the billionaire businessman’s plans have been criticised by one of Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas’s aides. Mahmoud al-Habash said the proposal to move the embassy is "a declaration of war on Muslims."

President Barack Obama taunted Republican lawmakers Friday as they prepared to gut his "signature legislative achievement" ObamaCare. During an online interview with left-wing White House echo-chamber "explainer" website Vox, Obama snidely said that he would publicly support repealing "Obamacare" if Republicans could come up with something better, but expressed doubt that the GOP would be able to manage it. "Now is the time that Republicans have to go ahead and show their cards," the president said. "If in fact, they have a program that would genuinely work better, and they want to call it whatever they want -- they can

She is among the most famous and easily recognized women in the world, but first lady Michelle Obama feels "invisible" when she steps off her official stage, according to her best friend and ally in the White House. And the reason is a remarkable one considering that she and her husband, President Obama, are America´s first African-American presidential couple. According to top adviser Valerie Jarrett, Obama is invisible because she is black. In her new book about the importance of black mothers in America and how they walk a tightrope in society, White House correspondent April Ryan revealed that Jarrett
