Newspaper unearths 19th-century
discrepancy about alleged lynching

PITTSBURGH - For more than a century, the death of David Pierce has been a stain on Western Pennsylvania as the only victim of a lynching in the region. The African American man was said to have shot and killed Sanford White, a white superintendent of a coke works near Dunbar, Fayette County, on the morning of Dec. 19, 1899, after Mr. White intervened during a fight between Mr. Pierce and another white coke executive, Richard Cunningham. Pierce was described as a "Negro" and a "dangerous character" in the initial news report that went out over the telegraph coast to

Meanwhile, Planned Parenhood snuffs out more Black lives in New York City alone over the course of one year than all the lynchings since the end of the Civil War.

Let´s take a look at who was originally compiling these lists of "lynchings"... Tuskegee, the NAACP, the Chicago Tribune.

Like today´s Southern Poverty Law Center and similar "civil rights" outfits, they have no need or particular desire to be factual and truthful, especially if it does not advance the "racist, unjust" meme that is the heart of their purpose.

Historians who say things like "a thorough examination would find many more cases that were never reported on those old lists" are guessing, creating prophesies begging their fulfillment.

Perhaps these same academics will one day enlighten "bigoted America" and the world with a list of bogus "hate crimes" perpetrated to rile race relations. Anyone following this site sees such nearly weekly - swastikas, nooses, nasty notes left for wait staff, arson fires, etc. etc.

Interesting. I always assumed when a lynching was mentioned, that they were talking about a hanging. If a lynching is when three or more people take the law into their own hands and kill someone, then the Old West was a hotbed of lynching. It had nothing to do with race, however. For decades, there was "no law west of the pecos," and stealing cattle or especially a horse was a hanging offense, carried out immediately. God forbid if you molested a woman. Seems more civilized than what we have now in liberal cities.

What grabbed my attention in this was the following paragraph:
The mistaken case of Pierce´s lynching apparently occurred because the initial news report, appearing in print as soon as the afternoon papers on the day White died, relied on second- or thirdhand accounts of what happened. That became the story of record, despite later stories in the Pittsburgh papers that got most of the facts correct.

Sounds kind of like the way "hands up don´t shoot", "I can´t breathe", and many of the other incidents last year evolved.

So the media mis-reporting of incidents in the rush to be first seems not to be a new phenomenon; though the social-media-inflamed riots and BLM assassinations of cops seem new...

While the Tuskegee Institute/University is working on their list of lynching victims, I hope they delve into the role of Southern Democrats in these crimes against African-Americans.

Also, the Tuskegee Institute/University itself was part of a horrific "study" of men infected with syphilis - 399 men (plus infected wives and children) all because Tuskegee would not inform the men or provide treatment when treatment was readily available after penicillin was found to help (in 1947). This was a 40 year study, from 1932 to 1972.

New history of movie ´Casablanca´

Casablanca isn´t only one of the most beloved movies of all time; it´s also one of the most written-about movies of all time. Noah Isenberg, director of screen studies and professor of culture and media at the New School, does a good job of synthesizing all of that writing in We´ll Always Have Casablanca. Junkies might not find a lot of new insights, but the book is a hugely readable and entertaining look at how Casablanca came to be, and how it came to be such an indelible part of American pop culture. Casablanca got its start in a 1940 play

Do you remember that “day without immigrants” protest that we talked about last week? It took place as predicted (and in fact demanded by activist organizers on the left). But in at least one location in Tennessee some of the participants learned a rapid and likely lasting lesson about the intersection of free speech and personal responsibility. Bradley Coatings, Inc. found out at the last minute that their tightly packed customer schedule was going to go up in flames when nearly 20 of their employees announced with roughly 12 hours notice that they would be taking part in the poorly

Unnerved by the high-profile arrests of 600 undocumented immigrants across six states last week -- not including Pennsylvania and New Jersey -- some Philadelphia-area businesses and restaurants that employ foreign-born staff, in the United States legally or not, are expected to take part Thursday in a “Day Without Immigrants” protest.

The liberal columnist for USA Today doesn´t have a problem with all liberals, just the subset she defines as the "illiberal left." As political discourse has become more coarse, she sees growing danger. In her recent book, The Silencing, she argues some on her side want no part of fair debate and are taking an axe to free speech.
