Oval Office under triple threat
Boston Herald, by Howie Carr

They say bad news comes in threes, and it surely did yesterday. The American people were minding their own business when suddenly three of the most frightening figures in American politics, shameless hacks who couldn’t park a bicycle straight, suddenly began babbling about running for president in 2016. And they’re all from Massachusetts. But where else would they be from? I said they were incompetent. First it was John Kerry on Wednesday in D.C. with several other former secretaries of state, saying, in what passes for a jocular tone, “I’m sort of thinking 2016, OK?” No, it’s not OK. Put your kiteboarding bloomers back

Look for Kerry, left background in the stills. Spooky! I think he may have been over-Botoxed. Yes, the thought of seeing that man´s face and hearing his strange pronouncements more than we already do is distressing, to say the very least.

Howie is right. How does MA manage to routinely send a collection of dunderheads to Washington?

But how is it that MA manages to routinely field championship-caliber professional sports teams? (Yeah, not Bosox´s year...)

In case you non-Jews haven’t noticed, we Jews bicker a lot. Some of us even have bad things to say about Albert Einstein. A fair number of us have bad things to say about Karl Marx. Or about Milton Friedman — to go the other way. (Yes, I think Friedman was a lot smarter than Marx.) So it should be no surprise that Benjamin Netanyahu is only intermittently popular in his home country. At the height of the recent Gaza war, he was a hero on the level of King Solomon, but then, after things quieted down with a relatively indeterminate

Washington Post, by Nia-Malika Henderson    Original Article

As Texas debates the implementation of some of the strictest abortion laws in the country, for at least three female lawmakers and candidates in that state, the debate has become intensely personal. The most high-profile of the three, of course, is gubernatorial hopeful and state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), who revealed recently in her memoir that she had medical procedures to end two pregnancies. “Our baby had a severe brain abnormality,” Davis said in a television interview. “We knew that the most loving thing that we could do for our daughter was to say goodbye.” Davis, now trailing badly in her campaign, made

In his speech to the United Nations last week, President Obama pledged to the world that the United States would use its might to stop the horrific depredations of the terrorist movement variously known as the Islamic State, ISIS, or, as he calls it, ISIL. “This group has terrorized all who they come across in Iraq and Syria,” the president proclaimed. “Mothers, sisters, daughters have been subjected to rape as a weapon of war. Innocent children have been gunned down. Bodies have been dumped in mass graves. Religious minorities have been starved to death. In the most horrific crimes imaginable, innocent

The woman was grabbed from behind as she was walking from a grocery store to a friend’s home in Fairfax, Virginia, on the night of September 24, 2005. The attacker dragged the 26-year-old into a darkened park and beat her and raped her. He then began to choke her, and as she lost consciousness it must have seemed that his might be the last face she would ever see. But the attacker was apparently

What can you tell about a restaurant from its menu? A lot more than what´s cooking. That´s what linguist Dan Jurafsky reveals in his new book, The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu. Jurafsky, a professor of linguistics at Stanford, looked at hundreds of examples of food language—from menus to marketing materials to restaurant reviews. Along the way, he uncovered some fascinating patterns. For example: In naming foods, he explains, marketers often appeal to the associations that we already have with certain sounds. Crackers and other crispy foods tend to have names with short, front-of-the-mouth vowels (Ritz, Cheez-Its,

In attempting to downplay the political damage from a slew of second-term controversies, President Obama has counted on the American people having a very short memory span and a healthy suspension of disbelief. The time-tested strategy for Obama: Claim he´s in the dark about his own administration´s activities, blame the mess on subordinates, and hope that with the passage of time, all will be forgotten. Harry Truman, the president isn´t. He´s more likely to pass the buck. His latest eyebrow-raiser came on 60 Minutes on Sunday, when the president blamed the failure to anticipate the rise of ISIS on his intelligence

Americans turned away from watching Obama even though he was being interviewed about the nation’s new war on ISIS. For example, Deadline Hollywood didn’t even mention Obama’s 60 Minutes interview when reporting on the drop in viewers. “With no football lead-in, CBS’ Sunday lineup fell from last week. Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder Monday announced a new federal program to target high-crime cities, including Chicago, Ill., where shootings and other violent crime have skyrocketed. Holder, who said last week he will resign once a replacement is confirmed, also announced that the Justice Department has awarded $124 million in hiring grants to 215 police departments across the country for the Community Oriented Policing Program, also known as COPS. Holder said the money would pay for nearly 950 new officers, who will mostly take on the job of community policing aimed at reducing street crime. The grant gives police departments the money to

Within Atlanta society the clan behind the Orkin pest control empire, now worth some $8 billion, became royalty, the envy of Buckhead’s WASP social set. Gary Rollins, the modern-era patriarch, would invite guests by the hundreds to join him and his wife, Ruthie, at the family’s lush 1,800-acre ranch near Cartersville, Ga. Top government officials and military brass repeatedly warned of the consequences of sticking to a timetable on full Iraq War troop withdrawal, but President Obama proceeded with the plan in 2011. U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker cautioned against such a move in the years beforehand. “I am certain that abandoning or drastically curtailing our efforts will bring failure,” he said in 2007. “An Iraq that falls into chaos or civil war will mean massive human suffering, well beyond what has already occurred within Iraq’s borders.” He told PBS later that he and Gen. The inequality police are worried that we are living in a new Gilded Age. We should be so lucky: Between 1880 and 1890, the number of employed Americans increased by more than 13 percent, and wages increased by almost 50 percent. I am going to go out on a limb and predict that the Barack Obama years will not match that record; the number of employed Americans is lower today than it was when he took office, and household income is down. Grover Cleveland is looking like a genius in comparison. The inequality-based critique of the American economy is a fundamentally

For President Obama, the color of a man’s skin is far more important than the content of his character. On the night when a police officer was shot in a Missouri town torn by racial strife, the president donned a shiny tuxedo to attend a ritzy black awards dinner, where he said police nationwide are to blame for community mistrust, even claiming that “most Americans” think the country is racist. Remember, when Ferguson exploded in racial rage in August, Mr. Obama chose not to curtail his 15-day vacation, spending day after day on the golf course in the white-skinned, white-wined, millionaire playground

WASHINGTON — The Senate’s minority whip is confident about Republicans being the majority in the 114th Congress — if conservatives can set aside differences and work to combat the massive influx of donor cash that has Democratic campaigns ahead in the money race. Only in the majority, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) stresses, can conservatives make headway on tamping down overregulation, repealing and replacing Obamacare, securing the “chaotic” border, getting Keystone XL moving, and bringing civilized debate back to the upper chamber. And only by realizing the gravity of the battle for November, he argues, can Republicans relegate Harry Reid (D-Nev.)

President Obama firmly believes the United States is better off now than when he took office, even though the American people cannot “feel” it. During an interview with 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft, Obama said, “the country is definitely better off than when I came into office.” “When I came into office, our economy was in crisis,” Obama said. The president then cited lower unemployment, private sector job growth, and deficit cuts as evidence of his administration’s success. “I can put my record against any leader around the world in terms of digging ourselves out of a terrible, almost unprecedented financial crisis,” Obama said. Sacramento, Calif. - Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed legislation imposing the nation's first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags, driven to action by a buildup of litter and damage to aquatic ecosystems. A national coalition of plastic bag manufacturers immediately said it would seek a voter referendum to repeal the law, which is scheduled to take effect in July 2015. Under SB270, plastic bags will be phased out of large grocery stores starting next summer and convenience stores and pharmacies in 2016. The law allows grocers to charge a fee of at least 10 cents for using paper bags. State Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles,
