Has the Cold War returned?
Washington Examiner [DC], by Charles Hoskinson

Original Article

Meet the new enemy, same as the old enemy. NATO leaders meeting in Wales this week have all but declared the Cold War back on, and Russia has responded in kind. Just six months after Russia annexed Crimea and followed that with efforts to destabilize the rest of Ukraine, relations between the alliance and Moscow have entered the deep freeze. Among the issues on the table at the two-day summit are plans to reinforce NATO´s military presence in Eastern Europe and measures aimed at deterring further Russian moves on Ukraine, which is not a NATO member. It´s a stunning turnaround from just

I don´t think Putin´s all that serious about becoming a world nemesis again.I think he enjoys poking his thumb in the US´s eyes simply because we have a frittering president.Mutually assured destruction is still a big player in an all out war and you´d have to be a real nut to pull that trigger.

Obama´s a bigger threat to the survival of this country than any outsider.

Sarah Palin urges conservatives

When Pat Roberts faced a conservative primary challenge this summer, he did what most Republican senators have learned to do: turn hard right. Now, facing an unexpectedly strong independent challenge, Roberts is doubling down. On Thursday, the three-term Kansas senator turned to tea party darling Sarah Palin to rally voters behind his flagging campaign. The former Alaska governor praised Roberts for standing with Sen. Ted Cruz a year ago during his marathon floor speech against President Obama´s healthcare law, which preceded a strategy that resulted in a government shutdown. "He [was] one of the few senators fulfilling campaign promises, doing what

Then he took her friendly approach to Wall Street after decrying her connections to the “fat cats” he had promised to tame. He took her advisors. He took her lobbyists. But now, in the full effacement of Barack Obama’s promise to reshape the Democratic Party and American politics, he has taken Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy. After a push that began with the publication of her memoir in June and escalated in multiple interviews with her, her husband and her allies, including fellow former cabinet members, President Obama

The people who anonymously accused now-dead Sen. Daniel Inouye of sexually harassing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand should come forward and make their claims in public, says Inouye’s last chief of staff. “I don’t think it is fair because Senator Inouye is no longer here,” said Marie Blanco, Inouye’s final chief of staff. “There’s nothing to back [the claim] up,” said Blanco, who worked for Inouye for 34 years. “Come forward,” she said. The scandal began this month when Gillibrand claimed in her memoirs that she was harassed by senators. But she refused to name the senators, even though she’s trying to champion the issue

The View is a television show that, apparently, a lot of women watch. Currently, Rosie O’Donnell, who was once famous for something–I have no idea what–is one of the hosts. Still, many women watch. So this video of The View’s women grappling with the Obama administration’s response to ISIS terrorism is noteworthy. I want to highlight O’Donnell’s contribution near the end: We are bombing Syria because Syria has so much oil, so there is a “financial incentive.” What the Hell is this supposed to mean? Why are liberals obsessed with oil? And what, exactly, is the “financial incentive?” Here is the

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, having decided for some inexplicable reason to do a long interview with a fashion magazine (maybe it is her celebrated collection of lace collars), reaffirmed the most important things we know about her: her partisanship, her elevation of politics over law, and her desire to see as many poor children killed as is feasibly possible. Speaking about such modest restrictions on abortion as have been enacted over the past several years, Justice Ginsburg lamented that “the impact of all these restrictions is on poor women.” Then she added: “It makes no sense as a national policy to promote

President Obama has put America at the center of a widening war by expanding into Syria airstrikes against the Islamic State, the Sunni extremist group known as ISIS and ISIL. He has done this without allowing the public debate that needs to take place before this nation enters another costly and potentially lengthy conflict in the Middle East. He says he has justification for taking military action against the Islamic State and Khorasan, another militant group. But his assertions have not been tested or examined by the people’s representatives in Congress. How are Americans to know whether they have the information

Emma Watson, the actress best known for her role in the “Harry Potter” series, gave what many are calling a powerful speech at the United Nations this past weekend, in which she called on men to join the cause for gender equality. In launching the HeForShe campaign, she acknowledged that the term “feminism” has taken on a nasty “man-hating” connotation and encouraged men to stand as allies in the fight. (Snip)Whether or not feminists will hear Watson’s message remains to be seen. But in the meantime, I’m hoping someone at the NFL was listening. Executives there have, from the very start,

Grim forecasts released separately on Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization say that by the end of January, the Ebola epidemic engulfing Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia will explode to at least 100 times its current size. An estimated 550,000 to 1.4 million people will be infected compared with the 5,347 so far. Scientists now report that 70 percent of infected patients are dying, up from 50 percent in previous reports. Shockingly, the Obama administration is pouring a staggering $750 million into only one of these three countries, Liberia, over the next six

Until, that is, a press aide for the Clinton Global Initiative follows you into the bathroom. Chozick describes a "friendly 20-something press aide who the Clinton Global Initiative tasked with escorting me to the restroom," adding: "She waited outside the stall in the ladies’ room at the Sheraton Hotel, where the conference is held each year." President Obama spoke very well, as he often does, when he went before the United Nations to address the slaughter by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. “No God condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning — no negotiation — with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force.” The president is right as rain about that, but am I the only one who thinks the president made a mistake by going to the United Nations before going to the US Congress? The short version: Since last month’s Wargaming column, almost all the movement has been to the right. The slightly longer version is that there are three factors in play here, none good for Harry Reid keeping his majority leader position, and time is running out to find honest ways of countering those factors. Now let’s get to the meat. The only outlier according to RCP’s poll averaging is that open Michigan race between Democratic Congressman Gary Peters and former Republican Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land. Despite Land’s experience with running a competitive statewide campaign, Peters consistently polls ahead of her in the

And that’s not a good sign, in case readers wonder. The initial air strikes in Syria ordered by Barack Obama included a number of targets near Aleppo that focused on the Khorasan group, chartered by so-called core al-Qaeda to refocus attacks on Western aviation in particular. US intelligence sources tell Eli Lake at the Daily Beast that the bombmakers of Khorasan had worked to develop non-metallic bombs, including clothing seeped in explosive compounds, that could pass through airport detection systems. In the weeks [see update] before the airstrikes, however, the terrorist group “went dark,” just as intelligence officials

White House aides posted the sloppy salute video on Instagram. President Obama on Wednesday delivered a speech at the United Nations filled with his usual soaring rhetoric of global collectivism and the importance of “international norms.” But the president also displayed a shocking naivete about global affairs, religion, Islam — a Pollyannaish interpretation on the state of the world and America’s role in it. Although Mr. Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize just eight months into office, the president made his annual trip to the ineffectual world council to deliver a call to war. “Ladies and gentlemen, we come together at a crossroads between war and peace,

Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. However, Bin Bayyah himself has long been engulfed in controversy for many of his views, including the reported backing of
