Pushing Back Against Putin
Weekly Standard, by John R. Bolton

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 9/5/2014 12:37:54 AM

Vladimir Putin’s efforts to establish hegemony over Ukraine may now have reached a decisive point both for the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe and for the NATO alliance. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko warned on August 30 that Russia’s invasion of his country and extensive aid to pro-Moscow separatists could soon “reach the point of no return,” becoming a generalized conflict. (Snip) Under Obama, however, especially because of his flaccid response to Russia’s slow-motion invasion of Ukraine, NATO has begun to disappear like a sugar cube dissolving in hot tea.

Comments:
Mr. Bolton clearly points out that sanctions over time are not working. Only the threat and then getting the Ukraine into NATO will work. NATO is "controlled " by US to deter Russia since WWII. With a weak & useless 0bama, it is crumbling. However, a real war with high Russian causalities may be the unfortunate solution, then. Stay tuned.

Will ISIS Help Pave Way for Iranian Nuke?
Commentary Magazine, by Jonathan S. Tobin    Original Article

One of the ongoing conundrums of Middle East politics is the fact that the United States and Iran have wound up on the same side in the conflict against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. But in this case the enemy of our enemy isn’t necessarily our friend. Or at least it shouldn’t serve to help weaken American resolve to stop Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon. (Snip) The Obama administration fled Iraq prematurely while staying out of the Syria conflict and thus set in motion the chain of events that led to the frightening rise of ISIS. So it is not in much of a position to pick and choose its allies in its halting efforts to stop the terrorist movement from

Britain could launch air strikes in Iraq and Syria within weeks after David Cameron set out a potential timetable for a military intervention and pledged to “use everything we have in our armoury” to wipe out Islamist terrorists. Downing Street was gauging whether Conservative MPs would support a military intervention against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil), with government whips asking MPs where they stood on the matter. (Snip) However, there were concerns that Mr Obama, the US president, is unwilling to go further than the targeted air strikes he has already launched in northern Iraq.

During his Labor Day speech on Monday, President Obama attempted to invent a new constitutional right – one that should alarm all conservatives, especially during this time of grave national security concerns. As he ticked off his litany of principle rights he supports, such as “women’s rights and civil rights,” he added an item to the list – “immigration rights.” (Snip) Conservatives must be clear, that while reasonable people can debate the amount and type of immigration from a policy standpoint, the notion of a constitutional or natural right for anyone in the world to come to the United States is a radical and dangerous one.

Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has been served with a subpoena by the office of the Sheriff of the Parish of East Baton Rouge to appear at a hearing on the lawsuit objecting to her candidacy held by Judge Winston Fields in Baton Rouge in his courtroom at the 19th Judicial Court on Friday at 9 am. However, the subpoena issued by the Clerk of Courts failed to explicitly require Senator Landrieu´s attendance at the hearing, as Judge Fields´s order of September 2 directed the Clerk of Court to do. Instead, the citation gave Senator Landrieu an alternative to a personal appearance in court Friday.

Zipping through airport security?
TSA says 50 percent of travelers do
Washington Post, by Ashley Halsey III    Original Article

More than half the people passing through U.S. airports now receive preferential security treatment because they pose no clear threat to aviation safety, federal officials say. The shift has significantly reduced the lines at security checkpoints, according to the Transportation Security Administration, reflecting the goal of TSA Administrator John S. Pistole to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to screening passengers. For years, the TSA faced criticism from Congress, the travel industry and fliers for giving the same scrutiny to grandmothers, toddlers, airline pilots, soldiers and other seemingly harmless passengers that

Scientists have discovered the fossilized remains of a new long-necked, long-tailed dinosaur that has taken the crown for largest terrestrial animal with a body mass that can be accurately determined. Measurements of bones from its hind leg and foreleg revealed that the animal was 65 tons, and still growing when it died in the Patagonian hills of Argentina about 77 million years ago. Although it was a plant-eater, a healthy Dreadnoughtus likely had no real issues with predators due to its intimidating size and

Moscow - Russian President Vladimir Putin’s maneuvers in eastern Ukraine — and repeated statements about protecting Russian-speaking citizens wherever they live — are raising concerns that the former KGB officer is aiming to assemble a new Russian empire from the remnants of the old Soviet Union. “Putin’s real plan is the destruction of Ukraine and the re-establishment of the USSR,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said hours after Mr. Putin on Wednesday outlined a seven-point plan for a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine that called for Ukrainian troops to withdraw from disputed regions in the former Soviet republic

In an effort to keep Matt Lauer happy, NBC is reportedly footing the bill for the “Today” host to take a helicopter to and from work so he can spend more time with his family. In June, Mr. Lauer extended his $20 million salary with NBC News through 2016, following speculation that he would leave the show over the brutal departure of Ann Curry in 2012, the New York Post reported. As part of the deal, the network reportedly agreed to pay for Mr. Lauer to take a helicopter to work in Manhattan from his home in the Hamptons. Mr. Lauer also has an apartment in Manhattan. “NBC News chiefs want to do everything to keep Matt happy,”

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell was trying to tweet about his visit to an elementary school to announce a new program for disadvantaged children — but an attached photo said otherwise. The tweeted message from the Democrat’s account included an accompanying picture of a blond dressed in what appeared to be a black leather bondage collar and gear. One of Mr. Markell’s followers picked up quickly on the discrepancy between the tweet’s text and the photo. The text read: “At Warner E.S. in #WilmDE to announce new initiative to support many of #netDE’s most disadvantaged students PHOTO: ow.ly/i/6M3N.”

President Obama said Wednesday that the federal government has authenticated a video showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff at the hands of Islamist militants, and the U.S. objective now is to “degrade and destroy” those militants so they no longer pose a threat to the civilized world. Speaking at a press conference alongside Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Mr. Obama seemed to lay the groundwork for expanded U.S. action against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIL and ISIS. Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. The layoffs came as no surprise after the Gannett Company followed the lead of many other companies that have already separated and spun off their dying publishing business into separate companies. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. FRIENDSHIP, Maine -- Imagine Cape Cod without cod. Maine without lobster. The region´s famous rocky beaches invisible, obscured by constant high waters. It´s already starting to happen. The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Rudy Giuliani has plans to change golf. The former mayor, a strategic adviser to the PGA, says he wants to make the game “simpler” by shortening rounds to 12 holes. “We have to make it simpler and easier. Let’s shorten the course and make playing 12 holes instead of 18 holes the norm,” Giuliani declared in a Hamptons magazine cover story with golfer Raymond Floyd. “I’ve played tennis for 20 years, and I’ve never played five sets like the pros do,” he explained. “I’ll play three sets with my pals. So why play 18 holes? That’s what pros do to win tournaments.” Giuliani
