Buenos Aires - Gustavo Cerati, who became a megastar in Latin America with his brand of showy, arena-friendly rock ´n´ roll, died on Thursday at 55 after four years in a coma. The Argentine singer and guitarist, who led the band Soda Stereo before a successful solo career, died of respiratory failure, said a doctor at his clinic near Buenos Aires, Gustavo Barbalace. Cerati suffered a stroke after a concert in Caracas in 2010 and fell into a coma. National G.O.P. Moves to Take

New York Times, by Jonathan Martin    Original Article

Washington - National Republicans on Thursday moved to take control of the campaign of Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas by sending a longtime party strategist to the state to advise him, a day after his hopes for re-election and those of his party for taking control of the Senate were threatened by the attempted withdrawal of the Democrat in the race. Also on Thursday, the Kansas secretary of state, Kris Kobach, ruled that the Democratic nominee, Chad Taylor, could not withdraw his name from the ballot, a move likely to set off further legal challenges in the race. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is dispatching

Hacker breached

A hacker broke into part of the HealthCare.gov insurance enrollment website in July and uploaded malicious software, according to federal officials. Investigators found no evidence that consumers’ personal data was taken in the breach, federal officials said. The hacker appears only to have accessed a server used to test code for HealthCare.gov. The Department of Health and Human Services discovered the attack last week. An HHS official said the attack appears to mark the first successful intrusion into the website, where millions of Americans bought insurance starting last year under the Affordable Care Act.

Russia’s defense ministry on Wednesday said it would mobilize more than 4,000 soldiers, 400 technical units and major air support for a large-scale nuclear exercise, just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin made a veiled threat about Russia’s nuclear arsenal amid the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The exercise will be conducted in Altai in south-central Russia, according to The Moscow Times, and comes one day before the beginning of a NATO summit in Wales. It will specifically include Supersonic MiG-31 fighter-interceptors and Su-24MR reconnaissance planes, along with Spetsnaz special forces units role-playing as

Court rules gay marriage

Chicago - A U.S. appeals court in Chicago ruled Thursday that gay marriage bans in Wisconsin and Indiana violate the U.S. Constitution — thereby bumping the number of states where gay marriage will be legal from 19 to 21. The unanimous decision by the three-judge panel of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals is yet another in a series of courtroom wins for gay-marriage advocates. Since last year, the vast majority of federal rulings have declared same-sex marriages bans unconstitutional. The Wisconsin and Indiana cases shifted to Chicago after attorneys general in the states appealed separate lower court rulings

The future of Obamacare subsidies in 36 states will be reconsidered in court—this time in a situation more favorable for the White House. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit announced Thursday that it will reconsider a three-judge panel´s July decision eliminating insurance subsidies for coverage bought on the federal exchange. The 2-1 ruling would make the subsidies illegal for more than half the country, rendering health coverage unaffordable for many and dealing a major blow to the foundation of the health care law if ultimately upheld. The pathetic and predictable
end for Bob McDonnell
Washington Post, by Chris Cillizza    Original Article

In March 2012, I ranked the 10 most likely Republican vice presidential picks for GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Bob McDonnell ranked second on that list. Today -- roughly two and a half years later -- the former Virginia governor was found guilty on 11 charges of public corruption tied to he and his wife´s relationship with a donor named Jonnie R. Williams Sr.. While it´s always dangerous to call anything in politics "the largest and most rapid collapse in modern memory", the fall from political grace for McDonnell is absolutely stunning -- and ensures his spot in the ignominious annals

Joan Rivers, the raspy loudmouth who pounced on America’s obsessions with flab, face-lifts, body hair and other blemishes of neurotic life, including her own, in five decades of caustic comedy that propelled her from nightclubs to television to international stardom, died on Thursday in Manhattan. She was 81. Her daughter, Melissa, confirmed her death. Ms. Rivers died at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was taken last Thursday after reportedly losing consciousness while undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords at a doctor’s office on the Upper East Side. Doctors at the hospital placed her in a medically induced coma.

Analysis/Opinion: The @#%& is about to hit the fan. No, not ISIS moving to attack the West, not Russia invading Ukraine, not Ebola coming to America, not the Middle East, not Libya (where al Qaeda — surprise — now rules), not even Ferguson. Health care costs are about to explode — again — and just in time for the 2014 midterm elections. When the supermajority of Democrats in the Senate passed the ironically named Affordable Care Act in 2009, one of the chief requirements of the bill was to force health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and health care centers to share in the staggering $2 trillion cost over

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. this week will launch a broad civil rights investigation into the Ferguson, Mo., Police Department, according to two federal law enforcement officials. The investigation, which could be announced as early as Thursday afternoon, will be conducted by the Justice Department’s civil rights division and follow a process similar to that used to investigate complaints of profiling and the use of excessive force in other police departments across the country, the officials said. The move follows the shooting last month of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American, by a white Ferguson police officer who

Doctoroff will step down at the end of the year as former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg resumes executive control of the company he founded in 1981. Bloomberg, who still owns nearly 90% of the privately-held company, will not name a replacement since he plans to run it with support from other executives in the company, the company said. FRIENDSHIP, Maine -- Imagine Cape Cod without cod. Maine without lobster. The region´s famous rocky beaches invisible, obscured by constant high waters. It´s already starting to happen. The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Rudy Giuliani has plans to change golf. The former mayor, a strategic adviser to the PGA, says he wants to make the game “simpler” by shortening rounds to 12 holes. “We have to make it simpler and easier. Let’s shorten the course and make playing 12 holes instead of 18 holes the norm,” Giuliani declared in a Hamptons magazine cover story with golfer Raymond Floyd. “I’ve played tennis for 20 years, and I’ve never played five sets like the pros do,” he explained. “I’ll play three sets with my pals. So why play 18 holes? That’s what pros do to win tournaments.” Giuliani
