Federal complaint says N.C.
hog farms hurt minorities

Charlotte Observer, by Bruce Henderson

A federal complaint says North Carolina’s regulation of hog farms discriminates against minorities who, disproportionately, endure strong odors and contaminated water. Three groups filed a complaint Wednesday that asks the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate what they say are violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The filing comes nearly 20 years after 25 million gallons of waste burst from an Onslow County hog farm into the New River, focusing public attention on a fast-growing industry. Then and now, manure is washed out of the metal barns where hogs spend their brief lives into open pits called lagoons. Water from the lagoons

Farming is, by nature, rural. So who was there first? This smell would be called a nuisance and if you move to a nuisance you get to live with it. It is like moving next to an airport runway and then complaining about the noise.

#1 unfortunately they do and then somehow they get ordinances passed that will not allow planes to take off before a certain hour or land after certain hours. I was on a plane that was grounded because a new ordinance had just passed and the plane had to wait 45 min to take off. I missed my connecting flight because of this nonsense

Oh for pity´s sake...
I live in the country, this may be a news flash to some but some things stink! in the countryside. There happens to be a big hog farm near me, some days you get a stronger than usual whiff, but if you live here you just don´t notice it.
That brings me to my point. What do goody good two shoes climbed out of their air conditioned car and decided life wasn´t good enough for the rest of us out here? Keep you button down shirt out of OUR business. Civil Rights??? Are you kidding?? So you going to file a law suit with Baltimore because of how cramped and nasty down towm...heck that whole town is? It´s populated by minorities!
If you want bacon, get in your limo and get the heck out of our way!

Our "uniter not divider" president´s administration sees everything in terms of race, and race alone. Remember that fraud of no red America and blue America? No, just a white America which has been suppressing good Americans of color for way too long.

I grew up in NJ in the 1940s and 1950s. My grandmother lived in Manhattan, and we drove through Secaucus everytime we visited.
Yet, more and more people kept moving to NYC, even though the wind blew the smell of the pig farms to NYC.

For members of Charlotte’s gay and lesbian community, there has always been out. Now there’s a new out. Rapid legal and cultural change are transforming interactions between the straight and gay worlds. For heterosexuals, that might mean more open – and potentially uncomfortable – conversations at home, church or work. For gays, especially older ones, the pace of change can be startling. While it has opened new pathways into mainstream Charlotte, it has also disrupted intentionally private lives. Finding a balance is not always easy. Sunday, Cathy Fry and Joanne Marinaro will join tens of thousands of other LGBT members

Feng Liu had a lunchtime routine that his colleagues and lab partners at the UNC-Chapel Hill school of pharmacy knew well. The 59-year-old Durham resident usually had a bite to eat and left his lab for a brisk 30-minute walk on campus or through nearby Chapel Hill neighborhoods. Typically, he returned cheerful and invigorated by the midday exercise. On Wednesday, the research professor at UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy never came back. A second Boggs Paving executive pleaded guilty Tuesday morning in connection with charges that the company received more than $87 million in road projects by misrepresenting the role a minority-owned contractor played in the work. Prosecutors say a third high-ranking company official will plead guilty on Wednesday. Kevin Hicks, the chief financial officer for the Monroe-based company, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Department of Transportation and conspiracy to launder money. He will be sentenced at a later date. Hicks, 43, of Monroe, faces up to 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine.

After declaring war on the Tea Party and often showing nothing but contempt for grassroots conservatives that powered Republicans to record gains in the 2010 midterm elections, Karl Rove whined that the GOP may not take back the Senate this year because of the lack of enthusiasm for his establishment-approved candidates. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Rove notes that even though Obama´s "job approval numbers are lousy, no Democrat in a competitive Senate race polls regularly above 50%, GOP enthusiasm is high, and independents are trending Republican... each passing day provides evidence as to why a GOP Senate majority is

WASHINGTON — Kurdish fighters battling ISIS desperately want more guns and armor, but they already have a secret weapon: The fanatics they’re fighting fear that if they get killed in combat by a woman, they won’t go to heaven. “They have many female battalions, as you know who fought very bravely,” Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), who chairs the House International Relations Committee, told The Post of the Kurds. Royce, who met this week with the foreign minister of Kurdistan, cited recent reports of young female Kurdish troops “laughing” at ISIS forces they had turned back. “These ISIL soldiers apparently believed that if

That rare respiratory illness sickening children around the country continues to crop up in new places. It has been confirmed in 22 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, appearing in three states where it had not been previously: Georgia, Michigan and Washington state. These children are facing an uncommon enterovirus strain. While enteroviruses in general are quite common, this particular strain — enterovirus 68 — has not cropped up terribly often since it was first identified in 1962. It can cause severe breathing problems, a particular danger for children who may suffer from asthma or other

Washington - The Secret Service is coming under intense scrutiny after a man who hopped the White House fence made it all the way through the front door before being apprehended. President Barack Obama and his daughters had just departed the White House on Friday evening when an intruder scaled the north fence, darted across the lawn and into the presidential residence, where agents nabbed him. The security breach triggered a rare evacuation of much of the White House, with Secret Service officers drawing their guns as they rushed staffers and journalists out a side door.

However, strange bedfellows arise if the Obama administration so chooses to uphold Kerry’s claim that we are at war with the enemy(s) of Islam. The following displays that Secretary

The French did for President Obama on Friday what they refused to do for his predecessor — they joined the fight in Iraq. Two Rafale fighter planes armed with laser-guided bombs “entirely destroyed” an Islamic State munitions depot and killed dozens of ISIS fighters, making France the first coalition country to make good on its promise to battle the murderous militants. “Other operations will follow in the coming days with the same goal — to weaken this terrorist organization and come to the aid of the Iraqi authorities,” French President Francois Hollande vowed. (Video)Friday during the White House press briefing, National Security Advisor Susan Rice abruptly left in the middle of a question after confusing reporters with her announcement President Barack Obama was going ahead with air strikes in Syria. When reporters began to grill Rice about whether the president had already given the authorization to the militarily to bomb in Syria, Rice kept repeating they would not be releasing information on the timing of those air strikes. Reporters continued to push with several trying to explain their question is if the president has already given authorization. Laughing uncomfortably Rice exited the room

The National Security Advisor of the United States did something astonishing yesterday. In the middle of a reporter’s questioning, she bolted from the podium of the White House pressroom, saying, “Nice to see you,” fleeing a situation she evidently was unable to cope with. The question that caused Ms. Rice to flee was a fairly simple one: whether or not the president has authorized the bombing of targets in Syria. Rice responded multiple times that the timing of strikes would not be released, but that was not the question at hand, and reporters pressed her on whether her boss had authorized

SALEM, N.H. — Voters have soured on President Obama. National and statewide trends favor Republicans. And here in his new home state, Scott Brown’s truck is gaining speed. Analysts and recent polls have found Brown closing in on US Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the Democratic incumbent he is vying to unseat, in a race that has become increasingly nasty and expensive. Once largely dismissed by critics as an unlikely second act in a state he moved to only last year, Brown’s Senate bid is increasingly seen as a plausible path back to the US Capitol. Observers see a race that may be largely determined
