Joan Rivers, a Comedic Stiletto, Dies at 81
New York Times, by Robert D. McFadden

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 9/4/2014 3:44:52 PM

Joan Rivers, the raspy loudmouth who pounced on America’s obsessions with flab, face-lifts, body hair and other blemishes of neurotic life, including her own, in five decades of caustic comedy that propelled her from nightclubs to television to international stardom, died on Thursday in Manhattan. She was 81. Her daughter, Melissa, confirmed her death. Ms. Rivers died at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was taken last Thursday after reportedly losing consciousness while undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords at a doctor’s office on the Upper East Side. Doctors at the hospital placed her in a medically induced coma.

Comments:
R.I.P., Joan. You were fun to watch your acid humor and commentary. I do feel, however, the talk of lawsuits while she was in a coma was unseemly. I´m sure if she were alive, Joan would have found humor in that event.

I was hoping she would pull through but her age was definitely a factor.
I admired her stamina and her focus on all that she did. I will miss her.

Watch that --no talent--Letterman try and cash in on her death, after he was so classless as to walk off his own show on her. He´s pathetic.

In the early 80s, Joan had herself photoshopped into the British royal family portrait from Princess Diana and Prince Charles´ wedding--she was all dressed up with a fancy hat and holding a blender with a big bow on it. I think it was on the back of one of her comedy albums. I still get a chuckle out of that one--it was priceless. RIP, Joan.

Rest in peace Joan. You earned it.
She had a lot of chutzpah and worked her tuchis off. Nobody handed her anything.

For those that think Williams was kinder and funnier- Joan was never a drug addict.

This evening they played a piece where she described her funeral. I want one like that too.

Condolences to Melissa and Cooper.

Washington - The current threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, will test not only the resolve and strategic judgment of America and its allies, but also our nation’s fidelity to a basic constitutional principle. Our Constitution reserves to Congress the power to declare war and designates our president as the commander in chief, but our recent history has been characterized by executive overreach and legislative abdication in the initiation of military action. The current crisis gives us an opportunity to restore the proper balance between the branches. America’s history since 2001 should compel us to fix the way

Washington - Militants for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have traveled to Mexico and are just miles from the United States. They plan to cross over the porous border and will “imminently” launch car bomb attacks. And the threat is so real that federal law enforcement officers have been placed at a heightened state of alert, and an American military base near the border has increased its security. As the Obama administration and the American public have focused their attention on ISIS in recent weeks, conservative groups and leading Republicans have issued stark warnings like those that ISIS and other extremists from Syria

Washington - Army Specialist Donald P. Sloat’s squad was conducting a patrol through the dense jungles of Vietnam in January 1970 when a soldier triggered a booby trap in their path and Specialist Sloat quickly picked up the live hand grenade. With no time to toss it away, Specialist Sloat, 20 at the time, closed his body around the grenade as it exploded, his sacrifice shielding his fellow soldiers from harm and ending his life. Nearly a half-century later, Specialist Sloat’s spontaneous act of valor has earned him the nation’s highest honor. In a White House ceremony on Monday, President Obama presented the Medal of Honor

The Muslim Brotherhood’s top official Mohamed Badie and 14 others were sentenced to life in jail today on charges of murder and inciting violence during a protest near Cairo last year. The court session had been designated for witness statements to be heard but the judge issued a verdict. Badie, the general guide of the Brotherhood, is among hundreds of the group’s members who were sentenced to death in mass trials this year, which drew criticism from Western governments and human rights groups. The death sentences are subject to appeal. In what is known as the Bahr al-Azam case, Badie and the other defendants were convicted of

Washington - A federal judge ruled Monday that a Tampa, Florida, woman can pursue her lawsuit alleging that the government invaded her privacy in the scandal over former CIA director David Petraeus. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Jill Kelley can press her claim that the FBI and Defense Department violated her privacy when officials allegedly leaked information about her to the news media. The ruling does not deal with the merits of the case, but as the lawsuit proceeds, it could reveal more about the role various government agencies played as the scandal unfolded two years ago.

On the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, President Obama used the occasion last week to remind Americans that “our combat mission in Afghanistan will come to an end” in three months. But the cost to U.S. taxpayers for reconstruction in Afghanistan will continue. The U.S. has spent $104 billion to rebuild Afghanistan’s security forces, infrastructure, economy, and health care and education sectors. America is spending more on the effort this year alone than it’s spending on foreign assistance for Israel, Iraq, Egypt and Pakistan combined, said John Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction.

There’s a lot of competition for Barack Obama’s biggest lie. The man who could assure the American public with a straight face over thirty times that they could keep their doctor under his health plan, when he knew that to be completely false, is one hellluva fibber. But execrable as that serial prevarication may have been, it doesn’t hold a proverbial candle to his most recent whopper — that the Islamic State is not Islamic — not to mention its corollary, or perhaps subsidiary lie, that real religions do not indulge in murder. Is a mutiny happening around President Obama? It appears possible that the president may not have made two of his most recent decisions with complete free will. The announcement that he would delay his immigration initiative until after the election and his formal announcement that the United States would take military action against the Islamic State could have been coerced. Maybe Democratic leaders in Congress and a few members of the Obama team have had it. Could it be that, after President Obama briefed Democrats in Congress on the immigration plan, they balked?
