USA Today Axes Dozens;
Marched Out, Email Cut

Breitbart Big Journalism, by John Nolte

Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. The layoffs came as no surprise after the Gannett Company followed the lead of many other companies that have already separated and spun off their dying publishing business into separate companies. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. Nonetheless, The New York Times reports that

The big question on everyone´s lips; What Now? I guess they keep right on whipping the dead leftist horse. Liberals and progressives never can see they themselves are the actual problem. Just like Frankin´s failed leftist radio, Air America; Just like Turner´s flailing CNN- they will never get it. It seems to be a kind of mental disorder, which demonstrates that crazy people never know they are crazy.

The functioning part of the USA Today business model was that travelers wanted a paper with news, stories, weather, sports, etc from every region in the US. This competed well with the second and third papers in big cities and even fairly well against the lead paper in medium sized cities, but the internet blew this model apart. It wasn´t bad for toilet reading, but there wasn´t enough there to occupy the mind for more than 5 minutes.

Former investigative reporter and producer Lowell Bergman observed, “You can have all the information you want in the world. If you don’t have the people raising questions and looking beneath the surface, and people being paid to do this, you’re not going to find the answers.” Over the past several months, a variety of polls and reports have documented the declining trust of the American people in the news media. A starting point for reversing this trend is for the heads of major American news organization to look in the mirror and ask whether their organizations or their journalists are

One small Virginia town is the target of a racial discrimination complaint from a fair housing group and a shuttered college that would have benefited from a plan to house undocumented minors. When word broke this summer the federal government—at the original suggestion of Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Bill Hazel and Secretary of Education Anne Holton—was pursuing a contract with the closed St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville to house what could be hundreds of immigrants, locals made it clear they had serious concerns. In what could be a pivotal error in the war against the Islamist terrorist group, the Iraqi military accidentally provided Islamic State jihadists with food, water, and ammunition meant to have been air-dropped to needy Iraqi soldiers on the front lines of conflict. With President Obama blaming his intelligence functionaries for his failure to anticipate the swift advances of ISIS in Syria and Iraq, the intelligence community has responded in stories such as the Baker/Schmitt round-up yesterday in the New York Times (discussed by Paul here).
