Obama’s Monty Python Foreign Policy
Commentary Magazine, by Peter Wehner

Speaking to a group of donors gathered at a Democratic National Committee barbecue in Purchase, New York over the weekend, President Obama decided to put his own peculiar spin on world events. While conceding, “I can see why a lot of folks are troubled,” the president said this: “And the truth of the matter is, is that the world has always been messy. In part, we’re just noticing now because of social media and our capacity to see in intimate detail the hardships that people are going through.” According to Mr. Obama, “If you watch the nightly news, it feels like

FTA: "We now have a presidency that resembles a Monty Python movie. Apart from the Islamic State, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Gaza, Iran, Pakistan, Libya, Crimea, Ukraine, Russia, China, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria, North Korea, and other nations, the world is a sea of tranquility."

This just cracks me up. It is horribly sad to say that it is true! You know, the sky would be green if it weren´t so danged blue.

The world now resembles a grade 9 classroom when the teacher has been absent for too long. We are at the stage where even the class suckups are on the verge of entering the madhouse antics.

This is the time when the door needs to open and in steps not the wishy-washy regular teacher but the authoritarian vice principal.

Power grid groans, blackouts roll

Power outages linked to L.A.´s intense heat wave rolled across the city Tuesday. As temperatures approached dangerous highs, harried crews restored service to one area only to be sent to another blackout. The scorching heat wave has pushed demand for electricity to an all-time high, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power dispatched extra crews to respond to damaged equipment that had left thousands of customers without service. As of 10 a.m., there were 3,300 customers without power, most of them in Los Feliz and Hollywood.

It may be thought that as an Australian I have no right to publish an opinion on American politics, but the whole world has an interest in who leads America. Your hopes and fears are ours. So, as one who has watched Obama’s policies of defeatism, retreat, and serial blundering with dismay, here goes. Dr. Ben Carson has many qualities that make him superbly suitable for high office: he has, pre-eminently, brains and force of character. No one can read his biography and fail to be impressed by his achievements and credentials. He is a fine speaker, and his background is, unlike

Bill Clinton never inhaled. Rush Limbaugh says he never smoked it. Marco Rubio won´t answer whether he ever did smoke pot but Sarah Palin admitted she smoked it in her youth and didn´t like it. Those pushing to have more states legalize marijuana consider this drug rather harmless, medically beneficial and liberal politicians consider this issue one that will attract voters. I don´t blame Rubio for not discussing whether he indulged n his youth or not. He is a public official with young children and carries a different responsibility than the rest of us. My own experience with marijuana was somewhat similar

U.S. on long-term track to waste

On the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, President Obama used the occasion last week to remind Americans that “our combat mission in Afghanistan will come to an end” in three months. But the cost to U.S. taxpayers for reconstruction in Afghanistan will continue. The U.S. has spent $104 billion to rebuild Afghanistan’s security forces, infrastructure, economy, and health care and education sectors. America is spending more on the effort this year alone than it’s spending on foreign assistance for Israel, Iraq, Egypt and Pakistan combined, said John Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction.

As a select House committee probing the 2012 attacks in Benghazi convenes Wednesday, three Democratic outside groups are mobilizing to protect Hillary Clinton from any fallout. In a plan shared with POLITICO, officials with the pro-Hillary Clinton group Correct the Record, working with the Democratic research super PAC American Bridge, said they will launch a new website, www.benghazicommittee.com. It’s a research hub that is designed like a news site and will issue detailed, rapid responses to charges against Clinton — mimicking the way a campaign would defend a candidate in real time during a presidential debate.

A car bearing Vatican diplomatic plates was stopped in France with 4kg of cocaine and 200g of cannabis on board. The car belongs to the 91-year-old Argentinian cardinal Jorge Mejia, emeritus librarian at the Holy See, who retired in 2003 and who is bedridden after a heart attack. Pope Francis, a fellow Argentinian, visited Mejia in hospital in Rome two days after being elected. French radio reported that the cardinal´s private secretary entrusted the vehicle to two Italian men to take it for its annual checkup. The two men drove to Spain to buy the drugs, thinking they would be protected by

Supporters of French President Francois Hollande have awoken each morning for the last four weeks thinking things surely could get no worse. Already, unemployment figures remained stubbornly high. Economic growth was close to zero. The president´s popularity was near rock bottom. Yet things have gotten worse. It started with a public rebellion by a handful of government ministers, resulting in a government reshuffle. Among those sacked were Housing Minister Cecile Duflot, of the Green Party, who described Hollande as "the president of nobody" and "Big Ears

WASHINGTON — The Islamic State militant group, which once relied on wealthy Persian Gulf donors for money, has become a self-sustaining financial juggernaut, earning more than $3 million a day from oil smuggling, human trafficking, theft and extortion, according to US intelligence officials and private experts. The extremist group’s resources exceed that “of any other terrorist group in history,” said a US intelligence official, who, like others interviewed, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss classified assessments. Such riches are one reason that American officials are so concerned about the group even while acknowledging they have no evidence it is plotting

Three days after Christmas last year, 13 members of Congress boarded planes across the United States bound for Morocco. Their all-expenses-paid trip lasted a week, and included visits to the cities of Marrakech, Rabat, and Casablanca. But much of what the lawmakers did while abroad—where they stayed, where they dined, what tourist sites they may have visited, and even how much the jaunt cost—remains a secret. That´s because the trip was underwritten by the Moroccan government, making it exempt from the tightened travel reforms enacted seven years ago in the wake of the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal.

President Obama said Wednesday night the United States is going to war "to degrade and ultimately destroy" the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. So right off you know one thing we will not do: destroy it. The only thing more reliable than the habit of American presidents of starting wars is the inability of wartime presidents to achieve their goals. President George W. Bush went into Afghanistan pledging to wipe out al Qaeda and the Taliban. He invaded Iraq to eliminate Saddam Hussein´s weapons of mass destruction, while promising that the creation of "free Iraq" would be

On all three of the issues referred to, President Obama finds himself forced by events to do something he dislikes — and he´s in trouble with much of his Democratic Party base for doing so. Obama seemed ill at ease before the camera and teleprompter on the evening of Sept. 10. Sending troops into Iraq and Syria is probably the last thing he expected to do when he set out running for president in 2007. There’s a lot of competition for Barack Obama’s biggest lie. The man who could assure the American public with a straight face over thirty times that they could keep their doctor under his health plan, when he knew that to be completely false, is one hellluva fibber. But execrable as that serial prevarication may have been, it doesn’t hold a proverbial candle to his most recent whopper — that the Islamic State is not Islamic — not to mention its corollary, or perhaps subsidiary lie, that real religions do not indulge in murder. Is a mutiny happening around President Obama? It appears possible that the president may not have made two of his most recent decisions with complete free will. The announcement that he would delay his immigration initiative until after the election and his formal announcement that the United States would take military action against the Islamic State could have been coerced. Maybe Democratic leaders in Congress and a few members of the Obama team have had it. Could it be that, after President Obama briefed Democrats in Congress on the immigration plan, they balked?
