Kerry: Sotloff Beheading ‘a

Secretary of State John Kerry addressed the beheading of Miami native Steven Sotloff this morning, calling the news “a punch to the gut.” “Yesterday, the world bore witness again to the unfathomable brutality of ISIL terrorist murderers when we saw Steven Sotloff, an American journalist who left home in Florida to tell the story of brave people in the Middle East, taken from us in an act of medieval savagery by a coward hiding behind a mask,” Kerry said in a statement, his first remarks since the video emerged Tuesday afternoon. President Obama said in Estonia today that the authenticity

“Islamic State” (IS) terrorists publicly executed eight Sunni men in a small northern Iraqi village on the weekend for allegedly plotting against the group, an eyewitness from the village told Reuters on Sunday. The killing began on Friday night when a pair of masked IS gunmen openly murdered a police officer in Al-Jumasah village after the group accused him of spying for the Kurdish and Iraqi military forces, the witness said. A host of media outlets have shown surprise that Pope Francis would officiate the wedding ceremony of couples with a sinful past. On August 29, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis would be celebrating the wedding ceremony of 20 couples in St. Peter’s Basilica on September 14. This will be his first time officiating the marriage ceremony as pope, something his immediate predecessor never did. The event will take place just over two weeks before the Vatican will begin a formal summit to study the question of contemporary marriage. WHEN the long, grim history of Christianity’s disappearance from the Middle East is written, Ted Cruz’s performance last week at a conference organized to highlight the persecution of his co-religionists will merit at most a footnote. But sometimes a footnote can help illuminate a tragedy’s unhappy whole. (snip) The fact that he was widely lauded says a lot about why, if 2,000 years of Christian history in the Middle East ends in blood and ash and exile, the American right no less than the left and center will deserve a share of responsibility for that fate.

Douthat wrote: If Cruz felt that he couldn’t address an audience of persecuted Arab Christians without including a florid, “no greater ally” preamble about Israel, he could have withdrawn from the event. The fact that he preferred to do it this way says a lot–none of it good–about his priorities and instincts. What ISIS videos and X-rated movies have in common. In his 2008 book Blood and Rage: A Cultural History of Terrorism, the historian Michael Burleigh observes in passing that jihadist martyrdom videos have a similar structure to porn movies. He doesn’t dwell on the point, although he does allude to the climactic “money shot”: in the jihadist case, the moment when the bomber detonates his explosives. In light of the many ISIS propaganda videos that have circulated this summer, Burleigh’s point deserves further analysis and refinement. One of the most striking aspects of the more violent among these videos—especially the

The temptation to engage in false accusations for purposes of revenge or pique will be great, and given the temper of the times, rather than an incident becoming a “he said, she said” issue, it is likely to be a “whatever she said goes as the truth” matter. Some precincts in northern Arizona tallied more ballots cast than there are registered voters, the Arizona Capitol Times reported. According to officials, errors made by poll workers and elections officials in Apache and Navajo counties led to the miscalculations. In Apache County, the Puerco West precinct reportedly had 100 votes cast, but only 23 voters are registered there. The voter turnout added up to 434
