John Morgan´s profanity-laced medical
marijuana speech gets notice

Ledger [Lakeland, FL], by Gary White

LAKELAND | John Morgan, the leader of a campaign to pass a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana, made his case to an audience Thursday during a forum at Lakeland´s Harrison School of the Arts. A few hours later, Morgan stood on a stage at a much different venue — the Boots N Buckles Saloon in North Lakeland — and used considerably saltier language in seeking votes for Amendment 2. At least one patron at the nightclub captured Morgan´s monologue on a phone and posted two video clips on Facebook. The clips show Morgan still garbed in the dark suit

Comments:
From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. For many years this most unfriendly-looking fellow has camped out on our airwaves far beyond the point of distraction, delivering his beggar thy neighbor in court homilies (e.g., "Slip and Fall? Call Morgan & Morgan," or "Dogbite? Call...." Although I support the medical marijuana law (which will pass easily), having Morgan the Pirate on my side is unsettling. I wish a dog would bite the Coun´slur right in his fat butt.

Morgan is a big Crist fan. Crist landed in the Morgan & Morgan firm when he lost his hold on his government job.

Pinellas schools add M16

ST. PETERSBURG — The Pinellas County School District has purchased 28 M16 rifles for its internal police department, according to Law Enforcement Support Office documents. The guns aren’t currently in use, but school police officers will begin training to use and store the weapons, school district spokeswoman Melanie Marquez Parra said. “Our hope is that our officers never have to use this equipment,” Parra said. The rifles, which cost $499 each, give school officers access to “comparable equipment” as other law enforcement agencies strictly for “worst case scenarios,” like an active shooter on campus, Parra said. In addition to its

“President Barack Obama today decisively silenced speculation by America’s generals that US ground troops could return to Iraq in a rare example of the White House publicly overruling the military.” Raf Sanchez of the Telegraph adds, "Mr Obama was forced to repeat his pledge of “no boots on the ground” after General Martin Dempsey told a Senate hearing there may be situations where Iraqi forces need American advisers during combat. The suggestion angered and alarmed Mr Obama’s liberal supporters and prompted the White House to hastily rule out the possibility of Americans on the front line." Of course the Enemy

It is well known that, when faced with a legal prohibition the first instinct of lawyers is often to seek a loophole around it. (Snip) Obama can claim with lawyerly accuracy in his memoirs that he never engaged in War like that rascal Bush did. This charade can go all the way into the 22nd century and all conflict, legally speaking, will be George Bush’s fault. The modern Western world has managed to abolish war simply by refusing to use the word. It’s word magic by modern shamans. You may say it is self deception: yes, but it is self

Once a week, members of a Wellington, New Zealand, book club arrive at a cafe, grab a drink and shut off their cellphones. Then they sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour. The point of the club isn´t to talk about literature, but to get away from pinging electronic devices and read, uninterrupted. The group calls itself the Slow Reading Club, and it is at the forefront of a movement populated by frazzled book lovers who miss old-school reading. Slow reading advocates seek a return to the focused reading habits of years gone by, before Google,

The signs of the times as read by the Roger Cohen of New York Times at least in his piece The Great Unraveling throw shadows upon a doubtful scene. (Snip) It was a time of catastrophe because it was equally a time of folly. For it was a time when people got Nobel Prizes unearned by achievement; when people reviled their heritage the better to free themselves of the past as well as the future. It was time when they cast away the victory of the Cold War and the result of the Second in the vague belief they could

TAMPA — Investigators from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission say they have solved the mystery of what happened when an alligator bit a woman last month while she was in her canoe on the Hillsborough River. Andrea Reese and a friend, Morgan Fusselman, were vacationing from Youngstown, Ohio, when they decided to rent a canoe at John Sargeant Park on Aug. 7. The two women had paddled for about 45 minutes and were outside park boundaries when an alligator jumped partway into the canoe and bit Reese on the calf and thigh. The attack surprised wildlife officials because the

The sheer ruthlessness and ferocity of Islamic-style warfare was underscored by the decimation of ISIS’ main rival by persons unknown. (Snip) Once the “moderate” nucleus is gone — where we can define moderate as SOBs who are our SOBs — you are essentially forced to choose between alternatives defined by your enemies. People who imagine that playing the clandestine card is a cheap and uncomplicated substitute for traditional warfare should think again. The game Obama is trying to play is not a “safe” alternative. There is an unfortunate tendency to regard organizations like ISIS, Hamas or Hezbollah as a rag-tag agglomeration of mindless fanatics. (Snip) Churchill is full of admiration for the Islamic warrior, but he is brimming with contempt for its productive flank. The neglected, boring area of workaday life is the secret sword of the West. Ronald Reagan’s America beat the Sovs by outflanking them. Even though the Cold War was militarily stalemated in the late 1980s the Soviet productive front was wide open and the West rampaged through it. The punditry struggled to find something enlightening to say about president Obama’s strategy to degrade … defeat … inconvenience … manage ISIS — whatever you want to call it — because there was almost nothing to hold on to. (Snip) As I also predicted, Russia is already busy muddying the waters. “Russia blasts Obama for planned ‘act of aggression’ against ISIS as Iran and Syria warn he could trigger ‘first sparks of fire’ in the Middle East.” Russia, Syria and Iran are forming a coalition against Obama’s coalition. Richard Epstein at the Hoover Institution has an interesting article on president Obama’s apparent reluctance to use certain kinds of force to defeat ISIS. (Snip) But too much of a focus on the president’s world view risks perpetuating the false problem between the doves and the hawks and emphasizing the bogus choice between those who are temperamentally inclined to peace and those who thirst for war. These characterizations are beside the point. In reality all good security decisions — even those that use war or violence as much as those which do not to attain their aims are ultimately violence
