Obama’s Faux Pragmatism
National Review Online, by Jonah Goldberg

Original Article

So much for non-ideological foreign policy. When Barack Obama ran for president he vowed to be non-ideological. He was a pragmatist and a problem-solver. It wasn’t just that George W. Bush’s ideology was awful, ideology itself was a kind of sinful stupidity. “What is required,” Obama declared the day before his first inauguration, “is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives — from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry — an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels.” On foreign policy in particular, Obama had been singing this tune

FTA: "As Bret Stephens recently noted in the Wall Street Journal, Obama has expressed personal rage at only one nation: Israel. Why? Because the Israelis don’t sufficiently hide their contempt for Obama’s incompetence and his secretary of state’s haplessness."

Jonah, Obama expressed personal rage at another group - the GOP - because they aren´t all bowing from their ankles at legislation Barry wants to pass.

Since Barry can´t muster much outrage over ISIS, I wonder if he´ll take a cue from them over how to deal with his GOP adversaries? I wouldn´t put anything past Barry who wants only one thing - to get his way.

Single adults now

It’s official, we’ve become the United Singles of America! Unmarried American adults outnumber their married counterparts for the first time since the federal government began tracking that data in 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 124.6 million single Americans in August, accounting for 50.2 percent of the 16-and-over US population, BLS data showed. That number has been hovering just below the 50-percent mark since 2013, before finally getting over the majority hurdle this summer. Back in 1976, the unmarried crowd accounted for 37.4 percent of the adult population and it’s been trending upward ever since. Unmarried

WASHINGTON — President Obama doesn’t plan to ask Congress for explicit authorization to take out ISIS terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Asked repeatedly if the White House would seek approval for the use of force, White House press secretary Josh Earnest on Monday would only offer that the president is interested in getting “buy-in” from Congress. “As a general matter, what I can say is that the president is interested in their buy-in, is interested in a congressional debate and is interested in consulting closely with the leaders in Congress so that they feel bought in to this process and they feel

WASHINGTON — More people newly insured by Medicaid under ObamaCare are seeking treatment in hospital emergency rooms — one of the most expensive medical settings, a study released Monday concludes. The analysis by the Colorado Hospital Association found that the average number of ER visits in states that expanded Medicaid increased by 5.6 percent, when the second quarter of this year was compared with the same period in 2013. The increase was more than three times larger than experienced by hospitals in states that did not expand. The jump was also outside the range of normal year-to-year fluctuations. “When this newly insured population is

One wonders just how stupid the Obama administration thinks people are. In claiming he is only delaying his immigration amnesty announcement for the good of the people, President Obama is either lying to us or to himself. He could be lying to himself, I grant it, because for Obama to admit that he is doing something out of rank political considerations puts way too much stress on his self-image. Either way, not since I took my kids to see “Frozen” have I come across such a fanciful story. Here first, ripping several pages out of Animal Farm, is White House Press Secretary

The Ravens decided to cut ties with Ray Rice on Monday, hours after a video of him cold-cocking his then fiancée in an Atlantic City elevator was published by TMZ. In the video, Rice can be seen lunging at his fiancée several times as he tries to intimidate her outside the elevator at the Revel. She angrily gives him a backhand slap before they make their way towards the open doors. Once they get on, Janay Palmer — who is now Rice’s wife — keeps her head down and appears not to say a word, but the New Rochelle native’s intimidation tactics continue.

But buried inside her write up of Todd’s performance is a little slight at his colleague Luke Russert. In her latest column, Stanley characterizes Todd as the anti-David Gregory, the guy who Todd replaced. “Mr. Todd doesn’t look like other anchors,” she writes. “For one thing, he has a goatee and speaks in a direct, conversational manner, without punchy diction or pomposity.” She writes that Gregory, on the other hand, “appeared too eager to please and too

The devil makes work for idle hands – and it’s striking how much support Jihad finds among idle Westerners. According to one poll, more people in France support Isil than people in Gaza do and, according to the Daily Beast, identification with fundamentalism is fuelled by middle-class ennui. In a fascinating portrait of Aqsa Mahmood, a public school girl who is believed to have volunteered to become a Jihad bride, journalist Jamie Dettmer makes the following observation: Mahmood is one of at least 50 British women and girls who are thought by security experts to have joined ISIS in Syria,

The United States expressed concern on Thursday that Syria’s government might be harboring undeclared chemical weapons, hidden from the internationally led operation to purge them over the past year, and that Islamist militant extremists now ensconced in that country could possibly seize control of them. Russia invades, China bullies, Iran spins centrifuges, the Islamic State (a terrorist threat “beyond anything that we’ve seen,” according to the defense secretary ) threatens — and Washington slashes the military. Reason stares. Several arguments are advanced to justify the decimation of our defense. All of them are wrong. The president asserts that we must move to “a new order that’s based on a different set of principles, that’s based on a sense of common humanity.” The old order, he is saying, where America’s disproportionate strength holds tyrants in check and preserves the sovereignty of nations, is to be replaced.

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
