California passes plastic bag ban,

Sacramento, CA - The California state legislature enacted a ban on plastic grocery bags on Friday near the end of its two-year session, a measure that if signed into law would become the first of its kind in America. A number of cities and counties in California and other U.S. states, including Hawaii's Maui County, have made it illegal for grocery stores to pack purchases in plastic. But at the state level, opposition from plastic bag makers has usually prevailed. The California Senate voted 22-15 for the bill, which must be signed into law by Sept. 30 by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has not signaled a position on the

Comments:
I simply refuse anything but plastic bags from supermarket. Anyone who shops knows of tears in other food packaging (like meats with blood), as well as placing unpackaged fruits and vegetables in a cloth bag is unsanitary.

May every single person there responsible for this by vote or support come down with a really bad gut-related disease from bacteria accumulating in their cloth shopping bag. That is after they break a couple dozen containers of eggs from liquid tears in their paper bags.

As for the few conservatives left there, and I know there are some here, I am very sympathetic but have little advice on what to do except move!

This is maddening. Some cities near us have this ban; some don´t. Guess where I choose to shop?

Smart & Final has packs of 1000 bags for about $17. Or did the last time I was there. I won´t pay stores for grocery bags. I have been hoarding paper and plastic. Isn´t that insane?

The reusable plastic bags, according to a survey article in the Los Angeles Times about a year ago, are all made in China. And they REALLY don´t degrade when discarded.

Having been affected by a citywide plastic shopping bag ban for a couple of years now, I have a mound of re-usables in the car, in which I stuff one of my own personal plastic shoppers so that leak prone products are contained - - it takes the counter clerks a little longer at the check out - it´s not their fault that some stupid politician thought he could garner some extra greeny votes. What grieves me most is to see how customers plonk their dirty re usables on the moving counter - who knows where those bags have been resting ?

Washington - As the United States begins what could be a lengthy military campaign against the Islamic State, intelligence and law enforcement officials said another Syrian group, led by a shadowy figure who was once among Osama bin Laden’s inner circle, posed a more direct threat to America and Europe. American officials said that the group called Khorasan had emerged in the past year as the cell in Syria that may be the most intent on hitting the United States or its installations overseas with a terror attack. The Secret Service on Saturday launched a security review to learn how a man carrying a knife was able to get inside the front door of the White House Friday night after jumping a fence and sprinting more than 70 yards across the North Lawn — the first time that has ever happened. Within seconds, the man who relatives said served as a sniper in the Iraq War got to the front double doors of the North Portico, turned the brass knob and stepped inside the vestibule. There he was grabbed and subdued by an officer standing post inside the door. He was carrying a folding knife with a 2-1/2 inch serrated blade.

On a scalding July day five years ago, I found myself hiking in Red Rocks Park, just outside Denver, with Gary Hart. The copper cliffs were brilliantly lit in the midday sun, which burned our uncovered heads as we trudged up a steep incline toward the amphitheater that Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration ingeniously carved into the boulders. We had come because Hart wanted to show me something, and as we made our way uphill, I was soon breathing heavily in the mile-high air. But I was more aware of Hart, who, at 72, labored audibly despite his legendary ruggedness.

When Jeff Bezos tells writers to keep quiet, they obey. Every fall, Mr. Bezos, the founder of Amazon, hosts Campfire, a literary weekend in Santa Fe, N.M. Dozens of well-known novelists have attended, but they do not talk about the abundance of high-end clothing and other gifts, the lavish meals, the discussion under the desert stars by Neil Armstrong or the private planes that ferried some home. Writers loved it. There was no hard sell of Amazon, or soft sell, either. The man who sells half the books in America seemed to want nothing more each year than for everyone to have a good time. All he asked in return was silence.

Local Motors, the Phoenix-based 3D-printing company that built the car with help from Oak Ridge National Lab and the manufacturing company SABIC, says it´s the first to 3D print both a body and chassis together. Other models, such as the Urbee, also use 3D-printed parts, but with a more traditionally manufactured frame. Everything in the Strati that could be made

Since he traded five imprisoned Taliban leaders for Bergdahl, the US Government Accountability Office has declared the swap illegal, and nearly two dozen House Democrats have joined Republicans in officially condemning the move for making “Americans less safe.”
