How USC´s Josh Shaw has access

Los Angeles Times, by David Wharton

Among the many questions swirling around the Josh Shaw story at USC, one more has popped up. How does a college athlete end up with a high-profile lawyer whose client list has included Rihanna and Snoop Dogg? Shaw, who lied about how he injured both ankles last weekend and has been suspended indefinitely from the team, is being represented by Los Angeles attorney Donald Etra. "I do not discuss financial agreements between me and my clients publicly," Etra said when asked about how or if he is being paid. "It´s a privacy issue and a matter of professional ethics." There are plenty of well heeled alums from USC who would cough up big bucks to support the football program.
Winning isn´t everything but losing sucks.

These "high profile" lawyers come out of the woodwork and volunteer their services whenever they smell a lot of media publicity. And maybe some sort of bogus lawsuit.

Think Gloria Allred...

And in Shaw´s case there may be a burglary (or attempted burglary) involved.

FTA:

Attorneys often seek out clients in the public eye, be they football players, actors or politicians. The publicity is good for business.

And when it comes to college athletes accepting such help, the NCAA sets a standard that seems tricky to prove.

Rule 16.02.3 permits student-athletes to receive pro bono legal service from an outside agency provided the service is not based on the player´s athletic ability and would be offered to non-athletes.

Etra volunteered. Pro bono. Business may be slow. Those high-profile cases mentioned were a while ago.

Etra is a criminal defense attorney. Shaw is implicated in an attempted burglary at the Orsini Apartments. He lives there, supposedly with a another football player, and his girlfriend lives there also. He and the girlfriend lied about his whereabouts, although she is the one who fingered him as matching the description of a big guy in dreadlocks scaling a balcony at the apartments. Just after a woman screamed.

Police department says no charges pending, but police department also continues its investigation. An onion-peeling exercise as they try to get to the facts, which attorney Etra is now trying to obscure by forbidding his client to talk with the police.

Somehow Shaw looks more guilty of some criminal act with the entry of Etra and his restrictions on his being forthcoming.

A certain rapper, married to Beyoncé , is now a thug sports agent. He probably has the kid signed already and got him the lawyer to protect his investment. USC is among the most crooked programs in college football (see Reggie Bush and how his family got a house to live in).

Josh Shaw didn´t scream "RACIST!" That was another player on the same team that called his coach (Sarkissian) a racist in a tweet. Hollywood take note; this has the makings of a soap opera.

The GOP’s favorite punching bag in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet is calling it quits. After six years of hostile exchanges at congressional hearings, scores of lawmakers calling for his resignation and a historic House vote holding him in contempt, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday that he plans to leave by the end of the year.
