A top North Korean banker in charge of Kim Jong-un´s slush funds is seeking asylum after fleeing Russia with approximately $5m (£3.01m), a South Korea newspaper has reported. According to the JoongAng Ilbo daily, Yun Tae-Hyong, a senior official at North Korea´s Korea Daesong Bank, disappeared in the Russian port city of Nakhodka. "Currently he is seeking asylum in an (unspecified) foreign country", an unnamed source, quoted by JoongAng, said. I would be willing to bet that if he tried to come to the US Obama would make him return the money first. Obama takes better care of our enemies than our friends.

Senate Republicans are preparing an agenda for their first 100 days in power next year in case they win majority control of the upper chamber, The Hill reported. The agenda includes authorizing the long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline, approving “fast-track” trade authority, rolling back new Environmental Protection Agency regulations and repealing Obamacare’s unpopular tax on medical devices. Republican senators insisted they were not “measuring the drapes” in anticipation of a wave election sweeping them into power after years in the minority. “We will have to be prepared if we are in a position to govern,” Sen. Bob Corker said. “You

Newly discovered witnesses to the Aug. 9 fatal shooting of Missouri teen Michael Brown are largely corroborating previous accounts, saying that after a police officer shot the unarmed teen once, the youth threw his hands up and pleaded with the officer to stop shooting. Two construction workers who were nearby at the time have told investigators from the St. Louis County police and the FBI that they "starting hearing pops" and looked over to see Brown staggering and running. "And when he finally caught himself he threw his hands up and started screaming, ´OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK,´" one of

There’s a fable in Democratic circles about the time Bernie Sanders, Vermont’s self-described socialist senator, who is visiting Iowa this weekend as he considers a presidential bid, apologized to Bill Clinton. It was right after “Hillarycare,” the health reform plan championed by Clinton’s wife, went down in flames. (snip) Not so, the senator says. “If I run, I would like to win. That’s why I would run,” he told msnbc Thursday. He’s not interested in being a protest candidate, he insists.

OKLAHOMA CITY — A GOP state legislator and the chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party are standing behind anti-Muslim remarks the lawmaker posted to his Facebook page, and both said Thursday they have no plans to apologize. Leaders with several civil rights organizations have called for state Rep. John Bennett, R-Sallisaw, to apologize after he posted a comment to his Facebook page urging people, especially Christians, to “be wary of the individuals who claim to be Muslim-American.” Bennett also said in his post that the Islamic holy book, the Quran, calls for the killing of non-Muslims. Michelle Obama hasn’t given any indication that she’ll run for political office, but Sen. Mark Kirk is suggesting otherwise. The Illinois Republican sent a fund-raising letter to supporters referring to the “press and rumor mills” that Obama may run for Kirk’s Senate seat in 2016. The letter was first reported by the Chicago-Sun Times and confirmed by Kirk’s office. Kirk even compares Obama’s potential run to speculation in 1999 over whether then-First Lady Hillary Clinton would run for the Senate. She eventually did. So is Kirk looking for supporters to connect the dots?

Here is a multiple-choice question. See if you can get it right. Asking for advice from Dick Cheney on foreign policy is as sensible as: A. Getting advice from Anthony Weiner on appropriate texting B. Asking Ted Cruz for counsel on the virtues of silence C. Expecting Vladimir Putin to say he’s sorry D. All of the above OK, the answer—(D)—is pretty obvious. Maybe too obvious. Maybe this subject is so plainly straw-mannish that it’s not even worth writing about. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday criticized former Vice President Dick Cheney’s views on foreign policy, describing his advice to House Republicans as “terrifying.” “Taking advice from Dick Cheney on foreign policy? That’s a terrifying prospect. We should be learning from our past mistakes, not repeating them,” Reid, D-Nev., said on the Senate floor Wednesday. “They’ve got to be really careful with advice they take from Dick Cheney. Dick Cheney is more responsible than anyone else for the worst foreign policy decision in the history of the country -- the invasion of Iraq,” Reid said.

Qua speech, Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing. To appreciate just how bad and bizarre it was, compare the president’s speech announcing a new air campaign in Iraq and Syria to Dwight Eisenhower’s 1958 statement on his decision to intervene in Lebanon with 14,000—14,000!—troops. The statement contains no chest-thumping about America’s leadership in science and medicine. No pivot to the auto industry and medical research. Eisenhower simply explained what had been done, and why.

Mr. Bush gained explicit congressional consent for his invasions (Snip) Mr. Obama may rightly be frustrated by gridlock in Washington, but his assault on the rule of law is a devastating setback for our constitutional order. Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. SAN DIEGO — African-American elementary students in California were chronically truant at nearly four times the rate of all students during the last school year, according to a state report released Friday. The report by the California Attorney General´s office is the first time the data has been broken down according to race and income levels. Officials say such data is needed to address the problem. Poverty and suspensions are contributing factors. Overall, more than 250,000 elementary school students missed 10 percent or more of the 2013-2014 school year or roughly 18 or more school days. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. ISIL is an insurgent group that controls enormous territory in Iraq and Syria that it governs. It maneuvers conventional light

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. Check your hygiene privilege. Cabbies who smell badly are probably just oppressed folks who came directly from their terrorist training camp to the airport and didn’t have time to change. Body odour is among 52 criteria that officials at San Diego International Airport use to judge taxi drivers. Cabbies say that smacks of prejudice and discrimination. It does discriminate between cabbies who smell like an open sewer and those who don’t. It further prejudges what a good smell is.
