Calif. legislature votes ´yes means yes´
USA Today, by William M. Welch

LOS ANGELES -- California´s legislature wants to define in law just when "yes means yes´´ on college campuses. The state Senate unanimously approved legislation Thursday that, according to its sponsor, will change how campus officials investigate sexual assault allegations. The bill goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who has until the end of September to sign it into law. Rather than using the refrain "no means no," the definition of consent under the bill requires "an affirmative, unambiguous and conscious decision" by each party to engage in sexual activity. If it becomes law, the measure would apply to all colleges and universities accepting

It would be wise to get the "yes" recorded on a phone app and a signature notarized or, at least, witnessed:-)

Isn´t this racist? I mean, "yes" is English. The state of CA does everything is 17 different languages. English is almost unheard of in CA anymore.

New York Times Public Editor Margaret Sullivan is right to side with news consumers who are concerned about journalists from the paper meeting for off-the-record sessions with President Obama. One such session occurred last Wednesday, just before the president gave his speech on the response to the Islamic State. As the Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone reported, well-known figures from the New Yorker, The Post and the Times were among those in attendance. One reader, Tom English, complained to Sullivan: “To me, it really looks like the meeting was held to run talking/propaganda points by the media to see how best

The Census Bureau reported Thursday that the nation’s marriage rate is the lowest since 1920, and the first-time inclusion of same sex married couples did little to reverse the decline. According to Pew Research Center analysis, the marriage rate of Americans 18 and older hit a bottom of 50.3 percent in 2013, down from 50.5 percent in 2012. In 1920, the first year mentioned, 65 percent were married, and the marriage rate hit a high of 72.2 percent in 1960. The new data did not put a number on the homes hosting same-sex married couples, though the Census last year

State police continue the round-the-clock manhunt for the man they say ambushed state troopers at the Blooming Grove barracks. Cpl. Bryon Dickson II was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass seriously wounded in the Friday night attack. Police say suspected sniper Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, stalked police from a hidden, wooded area across the road from the barracks, around 11 p.m., and then shot the troopers during a shift change. "Based on our investigation, it is clear to us that Eric Frein has a longstanding grudge with law enforcement and government in general since 2006," said state police Lt.

WASHINGTON – In a symbolic show of support for Ukraine´s fledgling government, President Barack Obama is meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the Oval Office on Thursday after the leader of the former Soviet republic speaks to a rare joint session of Congress. Poroshenko arrives in Washington seeking more robust U.S military assistance to help his country in its fight against Russian-backed rebels. Obama so far has resisted Ukraine´s request for lethal assistance, though the U.S. has provided about $60 million in nonlethal aid to Ukraine´s military. White House officials made clear that Poroshenko´s visit -- his first to

Brown eyes. Dimpled chin. He would be waiting at the State Cafe. And she was to charm every secret she could out of him. Of course, Quinaux didn’t know this. The Republican Party is, more than ever before in its history, an anti-urban party,” the New York Times op-ed page declared after the 2012 elections, a contest that saw the GOP trounced in city after blue-tinged city—and not just at the top of the ballot. Last year, Politico’s Alexander Burns dubbed urban Republicans “perhaps the nation’s most severely endangered political species,” and noted that the largest America city to elect one of these rare creatures recently was Indianapolis, Indiana—all the way down at 13th on the population charts. Cities have long been Democratic Party strongholds, but in recent years Democrats

It is no coincidence that much commentary on the Obama administration revolves around the crime analogy. Michelle Bachmann, on the House floor in 2009, said that the Obama Administration is guilty of “gangster government.” Even the normally circumspect Michael Barone echoed that very term a few years later. David Freddoso even has a book by that title, and throws in the term thugocracy for good measure. Similar references from Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other talkers are too numerous to reference. Rush has been particularly eloquent on the issue of political money laundering by way of government unions. In a
