Britons are to be the first in the world to test a new vaccine against the deadly ebola virus. Altogether 60 healthy volunteers will be given the vaccine next month in a trial led by Oxford University scientists. If the vaccine performs as well in humans as in monkeys, the trial will be extended to 80 people in The Gambia and in Mali. [Snip] Latest figures show that more than 1,550 people have died from the virus, with more than 3,000 confirmed cases--mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. It is the worst epidemic since the disease was first identified 38

A publication produced by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) this week has called for jihadists to launch deadly attacks during Friday prayers so as to avoid harming fellow Muslims. The sickening online magazine also suggests US targets for "lone-wolf" attacks such as New York City´s Times Square and popular Las Vegas casinos and nightclubs. Vladimir Putin´s creeping annexation of

You might not have noticed, but Russia has invaded Ukraine. Back in June, I wrote that Ukraine´s military offensive against pro-Russian rebels in the east had a good chance of succeeding--and, if it did, then Vladimir Putin would have to decide whether to rescue his friends or "sit back and watch them be vanquished". Sure enough, Ukraine´s army has gained ground against the insurgents, pushing them back to their strongholds in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. And Putin´s response has become clear: he has indeed intervened to save the rebels. Let's be blunt: to all intents and purposes, Russia has now invaded Ukraine.

Philippine peacekeepers trapped by rebels in the Syrian Golan Heights are "under attack", Philippine Defence Minister Voltaire Gazmin says. He said the assault had started early on Saturday, but gave no details on any casualties. In recent days the Syrian rebels have taken 44 Fijian peacekeepers hostage in the area and surrounded 75 Filipinos manning two separate UN posts. The rebels have also seized a crossing point into the Israeli-occupied Golan. They are believed to include members of the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda´s affiliate in Syria. Mr Guzman told reporters on Saturday that the Philippine soldiers had been attacked at one post, identified as camp 68.

The Department of Homeland Security quickly denied claims on Friday from a watchdog group that the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has militants stationed in Juarez, Mexico who plan an ´imminent´ attack against the United States. A DHS spokesman was bewildered, telling MailOnline that ´we are aware of absolutely nothing credible to substantiate this claim´ made by Judicial Watch, a center-right group. The organization calling itself the Islamic State has risen from the fog of war in Syria and Iraq in recent months and drawn the attention of the world with major victories on both sides of the Euphrates River that have claimed swaths of territory for its declared caliphate, or Islamic State. Now in the organization´s new English language publication, Dabiq, aimed at young Muslims in western states, the extremist organization declared, "Islamic State will do everything within its means to continue striking down every apostate who stands as an obstacle on its path towards Palestine."

Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) is working on biological weapons, according to data reportedly recovered from a IS-linked laptop, upping the ante in the global terror group´s pledge to spread Islamism around the world by force. Washington rushed to defend President Barack Obama´s comments Thursday night that the US has "no plan" to combat Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria, clarifying at a press conference that its options are "still under review." The key word missing, apparently, is "yet." “The president hasn´t yet laid out a specific plan for military action in Syria,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. “And the reason for that is simply that the Pentagon is still developing that plan and he is still reviewing it.” “The president was candid about the fact that the Pentagon is still reviewing options that

A third of Americans are now on welfare benefits, prompting calls to raise the minimum wage and encourage more people to stay in work. New census data has revealed that around 110 million Americans are receiving government assistance of some kind. The number includes people receiving ´means-tested´ federal benefits and subsidies based on income. Those receiving food stamps, subsidised housing and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are also included in the total. At the end of 2012 around 83 million were collecting Medicaid and 51.5 million were on food stamps, with some benefitting from multiple programs.

The United States has begun delivering nearly $20 million of arms including assault rifles, anti-tank missiles and mortars to bolster Lebanon´s army after Islamist insurgents seized a border town for several days this month, US officials said on Friday. Lebanon, a country of about 4 million which borders Israel, has long been buffeted by the rivalries of regional and international powers including Iran and Saudi Arabia, who back its opposing politicians largely along sectarian lines. But the threat of expansion by militants who want to build a "caliphate" stretching from Iraq to the Mediterranean has created an unusual common front among Lebanon´s

The Secret Service is investigating a possible threat made against President Obama. Authorities tell NBC News that there was a “potentially suspicious person and vehicle” near where Obama made fundraising stops tonight. Connecticut police have been informed of the report by the Secret Service, as well as being advised to be on lookout for this suspicious person. State law enforcement is currently looking for the car this person was driving, which they believe to be a blue Jetta with Connecticut plates. Obama attended one fundraiser in Connecticut tonight before heading to another one in Rhode Island

And it was successful, and the right to vote, again, so precious, so hard fought...We hope women will continue to exercise forcefully, because then all of the issues we care about, whether it´s equal

Megyn Kelly was incredibly bewildered Thursday night at President Obama‘s comment about having no concrete Syria strategy yet. Ed Henry was very blunt in telling Kelly that this is an unqualified “disaster” for the White House. Henry admitted he was “stunned” that none of his colleagues in the briefing room followed up on that remark of the president’s, especially considering how quickly after the presser the White House jumped right into “damage control mode.” And whereas last night Henry blew Kelly’s mind by telling her Obama would be attending one fundraiser on Friday, he told her tonight that actually, it’s going to

Karl Rove is at it once again. The so-called “strategist” is again confusing strategy with tactics, and is about to blow easy Senate pickups in Arkansas and North Carolina. This is not merely snatching defeat from the jaws of victory -- this is snatching defeat from the bowels of victory -- in astonishing tone-deaf fashion. There is absolutely no excuse for not winning these two races. So how is the one-time “boy genius” doing this? By running ads attacking Senators Mark Pryor and Kay Hagan from the left. During the Great Depression, the Communist scribes at the Daily Worker were forever assuring the more skeptical among their colleagues that the heroic spark was near. Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

At least four hostages held in Syria by the Islamic State, including an American journalist who was recently executed by the group, were waterboarded in the early part of their captivity, according to people familiar with the treatment of the kidnapped Westerners. James Foley was among the four who were waterboarded several times by Islamic State militants who appeared to model the technique on the CIA’s use of waterboarding to interrogate suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The victims of waterboarding are often strapped down on gurneys or benches while cold water is poured over a cloth covering

intelligence community has observed a “significant increase” in chatter among terrorist organizations as the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks nears. “We’ve noticed a significant increase in chatter among Islamic terrorist organizations overseas both on the Internet and phone lines,” a U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Blaze. While the intelligence community can not pinpoint whether or not an attack is planned, the official said that agencies “did see this kind of increase in chatter before the September 11 attacks.”

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

Despite how unsavory and barbaric Islamic groups and persons around the world have been behaving—whether Nigeria’s Boko Haram, Mesopotamia’s Islamic State, Somalia’s Shabaab—perhaps few things are as disgusting and cowardly as the Muslim rape of nuns: defenseless Christian women who sacrifice much of their lives to help sick and needy Muslims. The latest such attack comes from Bangladesh, which is over 90% Muslim in population. In early July, dozens of men armed with machetes, knives and iron rods attacked the convent of PIME (Pontifical Institute of Foreign Missions nuns in Boldipuku), a village mission in north Bangladesh. “The nuns were
