Chicago suburbs adjust to
medical marijuana

Chicago Tribune, by Alexandra Chachkevitch, George Houde

As state officials enacted the rules that will govern the rollout of medical marijuana in Illinois, dozens of individual communities updated their zoning codes to determine where grow centers and pot stores can and cannot be located. Now, with the state poised to begin accepting applications next month for businesses and patients, many suburbs have moved from the theoretical to the concrete as they consider specific proposals from people who want to grow or sell legal marijuana within town borders. Communities including Naperville, Elgin, Glenview, Woodstock and LaGrange have all been eyed by would-be pot purveyors as potential sites for

Why are people so dumb.

There IS no such thing as medical marijuana. It´s just a big scam. All the dispensaries, with fun party names for the plants, and edibles, and all the people smoking for pictures and having a good gay old time....and not a sickie amongst them.

The same thing will happen there as here--phony doctors write phony prescriptions and there´s your buyers. And the older looking kid in high school will get a phony script and buy for all his buddies back at school, just like what happened at my son´s school.

If you want to have a discussion about the notion of legalizing drugs, that is one thing. But please, stop with this BS about medical marijuana.

Actually marijuana can be very effective in treating migraines and the nausea caused by chemotherapy. Just because I don´t smoke it doesn´t mean I have to oppose its use by others.

#3, doesn´t matter. My point is that the dispensaries aren´t there selling to sick people. They sell to potheads. The whole medical marijuana scam was created for lo-fo people to think this is some sort of compassionate move.

Who´s behind the push for medical marijuana? Those that profit from it. And the profit is from teen kids and other potheads, not the sick.

I have yet to find a medical condition that MM enthusiasts don´t say is treated by marijuana. According to them, it will do everything but give you a pedicure. Perhaps we should just go out to our yard and start drying and smoking every plant we can find. Oh, and by the way, THC tablets, which wont get you high, wont work, of course.

The childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is for sale in Manhattan at $44 million. The recently renovated 1929 duplex retains its traditional architecture but has been updated with modern finishes and a contemporary look. The 17-story Art Deco building was designed by architects Arthur Loomis Harmon and Rosario Candela, who made a name for himself designing apartments in New York City in the 1920s. Candela’s name is often associated with luxury buildings and coveted addresses. Onassis’ grandfather, James T. Lee, was the builder. Jeddah (Saudi Arabia)- King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has warned that the West will be the next target of the jihadists sweeping through Syria and Iraq, unless there is "rapid" action. "If we ignore them, I am sure they will reach Europe in a month and America in another month," he said in remarks quoted on Saturday by Asharq al-Awsat daily and Saudi-backed Al-Arabiya television station. "Terrorism knows no border and its danger could affect several countries outside the Middle East," said the king who was speaking at a welcoming ceremony on Friday for new ambassadors, including a new envoy

Even the most ardent immigrant rights advocates are saying it: Reform legislation is dead this year — and for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, all eyes have shifted to the White House, where President Obama is weighing unilateral changes to his immigration policies in the face of congressional inaction. In March, the president asked the Department of Homeland Security to review its approach to deportations in search of blanket ways to conduct them "more humanely." With the results of that review – and Obama´s subsequent policy response – expected next month, both sides of the immigration debate are

ISIS is a cancer that must be stamped out, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrote Saturday in an opinion piece for The New York Times. Kerry called the Islamist extremist group, known for beheadings, crucifixions and terror campaigns against religious and ethnic minorities, a "unifying threat to a broad array of countries" that needs to be confronted. His article appears in the aftermath of the political uproar that engulfed the White House this week after President Barack Obama said "we don´t have a strategy" on ISIS in Syria. NEWPORT, R.I. — President Obama dropped into the City by the Sea Friday to spend a summer evening at a lavish seaside estate where he held company with members of the state’s top Democratic echelon and those willing to offer up as much as $32,000 to attend. The fundraising event for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee attracted about 60 guests to Seafair, the rocky shoreline home of Richard Bready, former Nortek chief executive officer, and Betty Easton. And if any of the dinner guests took a particular shine to the Ocean Drive citadel as they enjoyed their plates of prime sirloin

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Football may be back at Coachella Valley High School, but the mascot is gone. Coachella Valley Unified School District confirmed Friday that it has retired the school´s controversial Arab mascot that prompted objections from an anti-discrimination group last year. When the Coachella Valley football team takes the field against Rancho Mirage High for its season opener on Friday night, the mascot will be absent. The Arab mascot costume was a cartoonish, headscarf-wearing man with a hooked nose, a thick beard and a devilish mustache. He often appeared with a belly-dancing genie during halftime. The state Senate on Friday gave final legislative approval to a measure that would phase out single-use plastic bags in supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores as part of an effort to rid beaches and streets of litter. The measure, which now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown for consideration, would allow stores to charge customers 10 cents to provide paper or reusable plastic bags as an alternative to single-use bags. California would be the first state government to approve such a ban although the bags are outlawed throughout Hawaii because of local jurisdiction laws. Sen. NEWPORT, R.I.— President Barack Obama on Friday blamed dysfunction in Congress on a Republican Party he said is captive to an ideologically rigid, unproductive and cynical faction, urging like-minded Democrats to show up for November´s midterm elections. Addressing Democratic donors at a fundraiser in Rhode Island and another in New York, Obama said Republicans had realized that blocking all progress led Americans to become cynical about government. Republicans consider that "a pretty good thing" because they don´t believe in government to begin with, Obama said.

Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.
