By Global Standards There Are
No American Poor; All In The
US Are Middle Class Or Better

Forbes, by Tim Worstall

A fascinating little paper from the Brookings Institution looking at different ways of measuring poverty and then using these different methods to compare US to the accepted global standards used to describe poverty. The end result of all of this is that if we measure poverty in the US the same way that the World Bank does for the world then there’s actually no poor people at all inside the United States. That War on Poverty has been fought and we who would aid the poor won. It should be said though that the definitions of poverty used are not

Poverty is a family of six living in a refrigerator crate. Poverty is not knowing whether you´ll be able to feed your kids tomorrow. Poverty is...well, poverty is something rarely or never seen in this country.

I just repatriated after living 18 months in a 3rd world South American country. Many there wish they had it as good as our poor here. I find the need to tell people the difference between absolute and relative poverty.

The problem is, if people don´t feel they are badly off, they don´t need liberals. So liberals number one job is to make people feel bad and misreport reality. Liberals lowest priority is to actually fix problems (not that they know how) because that would dissolve their constituency.

Just looking around, there is housing, food, transportation, medical care, education, and other free opportunities for those willing to take advantage of it. The truly destitute in this country are mostly those with some form of mental illness that makes it impossible for them to interact in society.

In the Land of Obama, the moral of the article headline is we Americans are not as poor as the rest of the planet so let´s get to work and lower our standard of living so others around the planet will not feel so bad about themselves. After all, it´s only ´fair´.

Hurdles for ObamaCare

Potential complications await consumers as President Barack Obama´s health care law approaches its second open enrollment season, just two months away. Don´t expect a repeat of last year´s website meltdown, but the new sign-up period could expose underlying problems with the law itself that are less easily fixed than a computer system. Getting those who signed up this year enrolled again for 2015 won´t be as easy as it might seem. And the law´s interaction between insurance and taxes looks like a sure-fire formula for confusion. For example: -- For the roughly 8 million people who signed up this year, the administration has set

Yet another beheading. What´s the

After the beheading of another Western captive by ISIS, an international conference convened Monday in Paris to talk about how to tackle the threat posed by the Islamic extremist group. The Sunni jihadist group underlined its barbaric credentials over the weekend, posting a video showing the beheading of British aid worker David Haines and threatening the life of another hostage from the United Kingdom. It was the third videotaped killing of a Western hostage released in less than a month. The latest killing, ISIS said, was "a message to the allies of America" -- a direct challenge to the United States. President Barack Obama

DENVER -- The calls to 911 raised an instant alarm: One caller said he shot his co-workers at a Colorado video game company and had hostages. Another in Florida said her father was drunk, wielding a machine gun and threatening their family. A third caller on New York´s Long Island claimed to have killed his mother and threatened to shoot first responders. In each case, SWAT teams dispatched to the scene found no violent criminals or wounded victims - only video game players sitting at their computers, the startled victims of a hoax known as "swatting." EDINBURGH - Scottish support for independence has declined, a poll for Survation showed on Saturday, widening the lead for the pro-union campaign just 5 days before Scotland votes on whether to separate from the rest of the United Kingdom. A Survation poll on behalf of the pro-union Better Together campaign found support for staying in the United Kingdom was at 54 percent, while 46 percent were planning to vote for independence on Sept. 18, once undecideds were excluded. The poll comes as a boost to the anti-independence campaign after the latest "poll of polls" on Friday showed the vote remained

Members of Congress and the White House anticipated a peace dividend by winding down America´s foreign wars, closing bases and shedding tens of thousands of troops. But President Obama´s new, open-ended strategy to confront Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria is likely to eat into some of the nearly $500 billion in Pentagon spending cuts that were planned over the next decade. The first five weeks of U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq has cost $262.5 million, according to the Pentagon, and Obama personally lobbied key members of Congress in recent days to appropriate $500 million to help train and arm Syrian

The unelected and unaccountable sages at the World Health Organization (WHO) can’t seem to help themselves or resist the temptation to try to regulate the behavior of everyone on the planet. This is a shame, really, because a group like that could actually do some good if they stuck to trying to get basic supplies and medical care to people in remote, poverty stricken countries. But rather than devoting themselves to such laudable goals, they’re once again pushing to get every government on the planet to jack up sin taxes on tobacco.(This is something they’ve tried before, as I wrote

CHICAGO/MILWAUKEE — A federal appeals court has reinstated Wisconsin’s voter photo identification law. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck the law down as unconstitutional in April, saying it unfairly burdens poor and minority voters who may lack such identification. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago to overturn that ruling. The 7th Circuit issued a ruling late Friday afternoon lifting Aldeman’s stay and allowing the law to go into effect before the November elections. State attorneys asked a three-judge 7th Circuit panel during oral arguments on Friday to immediately reinstate the law. Van Hollen’s appeal remains

Even someone as savvy about everything as Michelle Obama sometimes flubs an outfit — or to put it more politely, wears something that doesn’t enhance her natural attractions. Which is not to say that’s all that matters about the first lady, who’s been busy with a variety of public events this week: registering voters in Georgia, cutting the ribbon on the renovated White House Visitors Center, commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks, even appearing in a videotaped shout-out to Prince Harry. This week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slandered a group of Middle Eastern Christians who were trying to raise awareness of their struggle to avoid a genocide in the Middle East. His cynical grandstanding was rightly condemned — but he was hardly alone. Cruz agreed to speak to this group, which included bishops of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, ostensibly out of solidarity, but took the occasion to antagonize them over their insufficient praise for Israel, then smeared them as anti-Semites before dropping the mic. The Washington Free Beacon publicized this flameout — their publisher said the room

Voter turnout during last month´s primary races was a little too good in some counties, Arizona elections officials said Friday. Some precincts in northern Arizona tallied more ballots cast than there are registered voters, the Arizona Capitol Times reported. According to officials, errors made by poll workers and elections officials in Apache and Navajo counties led to the miscalculations. Initial reports from some precincts showed a turnout of anywhere from 200 to 400 percent. In Apache County, the Puerco West precinct reportedly had 100 votes cast, but only 23 voters are registered there. The voter turnout added up to 434

Let’s start with the end. When it’s over — when you make it through the marathon that is Ken Burns’s beautiful, seven-part documentary “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” which begins Sunday night on PBS — you may find yourself with a lingering, nebulous grief. You’re sorry it’s over. You’re sorry they’re over. You’re sorry a certain expression of American ideals is, or often appears to be, completely over. My study habits haven’t improved since college; like an idiot, I put off watching all 14 hours of “The Roosevelts” until I absolutely had to watch them on a deadline binge this week.
