Opposition to cease-fire comes
from across political spectrum

Jerusalem Post [Israel], by Lahav Harkov

Original Article

Murmurs of dissatisfaction rose from the political Left and Right Tuesday night, after Israel agreed to a cease-fire. Meanwhile, Eshkol Regional Council chairman Haim Yellin indicated that he does not trust the cease-fire will last, saying residents of his constituency who evacuated should not return to their homes. "It doesn´t interest me what the government or Hamas say. I will only call on residents to return when I feel like there´s a real cease-fire," Yellin told Channel 10 news. [Snip] Just as half of the cabinet ministers were opposed to the cease-fire, many in the coalition expressed similar opinions.

Ah, it was me. Netanyahu is on the verge of a revolt. His popularity has plunged from a high of 82% seven weeks ago to 38% today. He has to finish Hamas off. The Israeli public is in no mood to make concessions to Hamas.

None of us is privy to Bibi´s thinking, but it may be that keeping good relations with Egypt was a factor.

Very frustrating from our perspective. OTOH, keep in mind that Netanyahu knows at least as well as any of us the bestial nature of Israel´s enemies. He is not a naïve American liberal.

Irish UN troops "almost certainly" would have been killed or taken hostage during fighting last week if it were not for Israeli soldiers saving them, senior sources told the Irish Independent on Sunday. The crisis would likely have been similar to the ongoing hostage situation with Filipino and Fijian UN troops in the buffer zone along the Syrian border. The Philippines´ soldiers managed to escape into safety in Israel, while the 44 soldiers from Fiji still remain in captivity. Residents of the German city of Wuppertal have expressed concern after a group of young radical Islamists started taking to the streets late at night, trying to deter revellers from drinking and gambling. The self-styled "Sharia Police" have been patrolling an area around the city´s main train station, declaring the popular nightlife area to be a "Sharia Controlled Zone". Deutshe Welle reports that witnesses have seen them handing out leaflets urging people not to drink alcohol, attend concerts, gamble, watch pornography or visit prostitutes. When GQ, the glossy men’s magazine, announced that Tony Blair had won its Philanthropist of the Year award, the former prime minister beamed with delight as he collected his trophy at its glittering awards ceremony. Here was vindication for his efforts since leaving Downing Street, including setting up three charities in his name. The Charity Commission has told The Sunday Telegraph that it will meet representatives of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation (TBFF) over concerns brought to its attention by a former

Barack Obama´s presidency continues to be degraded and destroyed. The beheading of a second American journalist by Isil (for dealing with which Obama recently said he has "no strategy"), coupled with Vladimir Putin´s continued provocations in Ukraine, only reinforce an image of impotence and malaise. So this should be the perfect moment for the Republican Party to begin the campaign for a new direction. Fortunately for them, in less than 60 days the Congressional mid-term elections will be held. A US state department spokeswoman said Washington would also not "share intelligence" with Iran. Iranian sources earlier told the BBC Iran´s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had authorised one of his top commanders for such contacts. But Iran´s foreign ministry also denied the report as incorrect. Iran has traditionally opposed US involvement in Iraq, an Iranian ally. "We don´t co-ordinate military action or share intelligence with Iran," state department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
