Search for James Foley

Boston Globe, by Bryan Bender and Noah Bierman

WASHINGTON — It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2012 when top executives at the Boston-based GlobalPost received an e-mail from one of the news service’s freelance correspondents near the Syrian border. “Hate to be writing this to you but Jim has gone missing in Syria,” she wrote. The prospect that James W. Foley had been taken hostage left GlobalPost co-founder Charles M. Sennott with “a terrible, sinking sense of deja vu” — a “here we go again” feeling. Foley, the New Hampshire-born war correspondent beheaded by militants from the terrorist group calling itself the Islamic State, had previously been kidnapped in

That he didn´t learn his lesson the first time speaks volumes.

That he had no problem denouncing the US before his execution and telling his brother in the military to think about what he was doing speaks even louder.

He risked everything to support a murdering ideology and it turned around and bit him. I wonder if he missed the US when he was in the custody of these monsters.

What We need to care about is neither Zippy nor any of his staff were sent to his family, or that of a general shot in the back, yet he gave a speech for Michael Brown, sent EH, and then staff to the funeral of a two bit thug.

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

At the very end of Matt Bai’s New York Times Magazine feature about Gary Hart that could be titled “Hart-less: The Original Bimbo Eruption,” there’s a short passage that puts on full display the irrepressible presumption of liberalism—or perhaps it’s another example of Bush Derangement Syndrome. Here’s how the piece ends: “It’s what he could have done for this country that I think bothers him to this very day,” Lee [Hart] said. “Well, at the very least, George W. Bush wouldn’t have been president,” [Gary] Hart said ruefully. This sounded a little narcissistic, but it was, in fact, a hard premise to

With his decision to use force against the violent extremists of the Islamic State, President Obama is doing more than to knowingly enter a quagmire. He is doing more than play with the fates of two half-broken countries—Iraq and Syria—whose societies were gutted long before the Americans appeared on the horizon. Obama is stepping once again—and with understandably great reluctance—into the chaos of an entire civilization that has broken down. Arab civilization, such as we knew it, is all but gone. The Arab world today is more violent, unstable, fragmented and driven by extremism—the extremism of the rulers and those in

The 2014 November midterm elections are nearly here, and Democratic and Republican candidates across the country are bracing for the inevitable conclusion to months of campaigning. But even as certain forecast models downgrade the GOP’s chances for taking Congress’ upper chamber, several recent polls signal that Republicans will indeed walk away from November with many victories and perhaps a Senate majority. Here are the top nine polls from this week that hint at good news for the GOP: Colorado: In a Quinnipiac survey released Thursday, Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., holds a 48 percent to 40 percent lead over Democratic Sen.

FOR THE sake of the cameras, President Obama assured Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at a White House meeting Thursday that “not only do we support Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence in words, but we’ve also been supporting it in deeds.” If only that were true. The reality is that the beleaguered Ukrainian leader left Washington backed by considerable rhetoric from the Obama administration but little with which he can turn back the continuing Russian aggression against his country. In an emotional address to Congress, Mr. Poroshenko described Ukraine as fighting for Western democratic values as well as its own survival, and he

The seven-month scandal that is threatening Roger Goodell´s future as NFL commissioner began with an unexpected phone call in the early morning hours on a Saturday in February. Just hours after running back Ray Rice knocked out his then-fiancée with a left hook at the Revel Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Baltimore Ravens´ director of security, Darren Sanders, reached an Atlantic City police officer by phone. While watching surveillance video -- shot from inside the elevator where Rice´s punch knocked his fiancée unconscious -- the officer, who told Sanders he just happened to be a Ravens fan, described

The family of Glen Doherty, the former Navy SEAL killed in the 2012 Benghazi terror attack, has filed a $2 million claim against the CIA and the State Department. Barbara Doherty, the CIA contractor and former SEAL’s mother, filed a claim last week with the two government agencies for $1 million each. The family does not believe there was adequate security at the U.S. diplomatic outpost and a CIA annex when they were attacked Sept. 11, 2012. Dean Boyd, a spokesman for the CIA, said the agency would have no comment on the potential litigation, the Associated Press reported Friday. The

The conventional wisdom concerning the comparative generalship of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant was established almost immediately after the Civil War. Despite his role as, in the words of Frederick Douglass, “the rebel chieftain,” Lee has been portrayed as surpassing all others on both sides of the conflict not only in soldierly virtue but also in magnanimity and humanity. Indeed, for decades, no Civil War figure, not even Abraham Lincoln, has exceeded the reputation of Robert E. Lee. Lee has been described as the perfect soldier — a Christian and a gentleman as well as a peerless commander who

With little fanfare, President Obama has enjoyed remarkable success in his project to remake the federal courts in his own ideological image. How much more he achieves during his final two years in office depends in large part on whether Republicans win control of the Senate this November. Obama’s success is most marked in the federal courts of appeals, the intermediate level of the national judicial hierarchy. When Obama took office, only 1 of the 13 appellate courts had a majority of Democratic appointees. Now 9 do. Obama’s number of confirmed appellate nominees—53—only slightly exceeds President George W. Bush’s six-year total

Why commissioner and not GOP nominee? The 2016 field is “insanely wide open,” after all, and she’s got plenty to commend her — sterling academic credentials, years of diplomatic experience at the highest level, popularity among both wings of the GOP, and a trailblazer narrative that can trump even Hillary’s. She’d be seen, rightly or wrongly, as the “adult” in a field of Republican neophytes, someone whose

The American people’s reaction to Muslim thugs of the “Islamic State” ritually knifing off the heads of people who look like you and me boils down to “let’s destroy these bastards”—which is common sense. But our ruling class, from President Obama on the Left to The Wall Street Journal on the Right, take the public’s pressure to do this as another occasion for further indulging their longtime preferences, prejudices, and proclivities for half-measures in foreign affairs—the very things that have invited people from all over the planet to join hunting season on Americans. This indulgence so overwhelms our ruling class’s perception

Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. The U.S Senate passed a bill Thursday evening that will give President Barack Obama the authority to arm moderate Syrian rebels, which is a key part of his plan to fight the jihadist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS and ISIL). The U.S. military campaign against Islamist militants in Syria is being designed to allow President Barack Obama to exert a high degree of personal control, going so far as to require that the military obtain presidential signoff for strikes in Syrian territory, officials said. The requirements for strikes in Syria against the extremist group Islamic State will be far more stringent than those targeting

What was the Islamic State thinking? We know it is sophisticated in its use of modern media. But what was the logic of propagating to the world videos of its beheadings of two Americans (and subsequently a Briton) — sure to inflame public opinion? There are two possible explanations. One is that these terrorists are more depraved and less savvy than we think. They so glory in blood that they could not resist making an international spectacle of their savagery — after all, they proudly broadcast their massacre of Shiite prisoners — and did not quite fathom how such a
