Hedonism and beheading:

The murder of American photojournalist James Foley by hooded thugs in the Islamic State ought to unite our country in a passion for justice, but it won’t. Our country no longer strives for justice. Otherwise the death of James Foley would never have happened. The terrorists who now control nearly half of Iraq and a good portion of Syria would have been exterminated long ago like the pestilent plague they are. It’s not just our failure to wage war against evil overseas either that reveals our decline as a great nation. You only have to look to the disaster in Ferguson, Missouri,

Let´s begin to cure the stupidity:

1. Any state with a Republican governor and Republican-controlled legislature should pass voter photo ID laws - NOW!
2. Pass state a/o federal voter qualification laws - NOW! [Simply breathing and holding a pre-marked voting card should not be qualifying criteria.]

Good article. While reading the first sentence, I thought, we cannot unite as a country against the brutal actions of
Islam as long as our government leaders have one definition (and public statement) of what we are facing and common sense Americans hold another view. Just the simple truth.

Demand truth about Benghazi

Are you tired of being lied to yet? My guess is no... because Americans seem to have developed an infinite capacity for patience with a federal government that is increasingly mettlesome, mendacious and menacing.[SNIP] This last Friday night, an interview was aired which should convince American citizens once and for all that their government is not telling the truth about what happened in Libya two years ago. That’s been obvious to many of us for months, but despite the naming of a select committee by the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate what could have happened, what should have happened,

Conservative readers question me on a regular basis about why the Daily Inter Lake publishes the somewhat confrontational column by liberal Gene Lyons every week. The straightforward answer is because liberals exist and therefore they need a column to read. Far be it from me to shut down the free exchange of ideas.(SNIP)What brings me out of the closet as a Lyons reader, however, is last Thursday’s column in which he bravely but foolishly defended the bedraggled climate scientist Michael Mann from the ripostes of Mark Steyn, perhaps the most capably armed social critic since Edmund Wilson.According to Lyons, Steyn

The absurd attacks on Israel for exercising its right of self-defense in the past few weeks have only been surpassed in foolhardy dangerousness by the world’s virtual silence about the genocide being practiced against Christians and other minority religions in the Islamic State formerly known as northwestern Iraq. No matter how you try to wrap your head around the hypocrisy of people calling out Israel for supposed war crimes while at the same time closing their eyes to the uncomfortable truth of the barbaric genocide being waged by Islamic fundamentalists, you cannot do so. Hypocrisy of this dimension is almost demonic.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas recently ordered 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the state’s border with Mexico to assist the Border Patrol in responding to the growing crisis of illegal entry.[SNIP]The only problem is that Perry’s deployment order is symbolic, not serious, and it won’t do any good until it becomes serious. It is unlikely that Perry is any more likely than any other politician to put his own personal interest second, and the needs of the nation first, but the fact of the matter is we don’t need 1,000 troops on the border, we need 10,000, maybe more.

Let’s put it in context: If John Walsh had plagiarized while working in the newsroom at the Daily Inter Lake, he would have been sent packing. That’s because credibility is the gold standard for a newspaper or any other news gathering organization. Plagiarism — taking credit for someone else’s words — is at its root another form of lying, and a newspaper has no credibility if it tolerates lying. Whether the same standard applies in the Senate is up for debate. A story in the New York Times last week demonstrated conclusively that Sen. Walsh had plagiarized large portions of his 2007 master’s thesis at the Army War College in

The Constitution is under assault. So is our way of life. Do you care?Too many people don’t, or at least won’t do anything to stand up for it, which is why it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the proud experiment in liberty called We the People is about to end in abysmal failure.Case in point, the June 30 opinion by the U.S. Supreme Court known colloquially as the Hobby Lobby decision.[SNIP]the court’s ruling does not in any way protect our individual religious freedom; what it does instead is uphold the right of the government to decide for us what religious

Sarah Palin and John Boehner should kiss and make up. They owe it to the country, no matter how uncomfortable the idea makes them or us feel! Palin is the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate who has become a Tea Party maverick, and Boehner is the Republican speaker of the House who is a GOP establishment dinosaur. Last week the battle lines were clearly drawn between these two camps of the Republican Party. Palin called for the impeachment of President Obama, in particular because of his abdication of responsibility for defending our southern border. Boehner, on the other

When I was growing up in Stony Point, N.Y., I was surrounded by reminders of the birth of our nation, and the sacrifices that were made to wrest our liberty from the yoke of a tyrant. [SNIP]Is there any reason to harp on the battles of yesteryear? To ask such a question in today’s politically correct climate is almost to invite calumny. After all, we are at peace, aren’t we? Oh wait, no, we are at war. But yet there is no immediate danger to our sovereignty, is there? Oh wait, there is an entire worldwide culture which would destroy

Less than 48 hours ahead of a planned address to the nation on how the U.S. plans to combat Islamic State terrorists operating in Iraq and Syria, President Obama dined at the White House Monday with a slate of foreign policy experts. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State John Kerry were joined by some of Washington’s most established foreign policy hands, including Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger and Zbigniew Brzezinski, who held the same position during the Carter administration. Former Obama national security adviser Tom Donilon was also at the dinner, as was former Undersecretary for Defense Policy

The comedienne sent Hollywood into mourning when she died Thursday, days after suffering a cardiac arrest during a routine throat procedure. Her funeral was held in her New York on Sunday and attracted stars including Hugh Jackman, Whoopi Goldberg, Kelly Osbourne and Sarah Jessica Parker, and it has now emerged Rivers had previously drawn up a wish-list of famous faces who should stay away. In one of her final interviews, conducted just weeks before her death, she

Half of all bird species in North America — including the bald eagle — are at risk of severe population decline by 2080 if the swift pace of global warming continues, the National Audubon Society concluded in a study released Monday. "The scale of the disruption we´re projecting is a real punch in the gut," said Gary Langham, chief Audubon scientist. (Snip) By 2080, the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, could see its habitat decrease by 75%, the report says. Washington — Panera Bread on Monday asked customers not to bring firearms into its restaurants, joining a growing list of retail and fast-food chains that have declared their establishments gun-free zones. The company said it wants to ensure that "customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome” in its restaurants. “We ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer," the eatery chain, which boosts 1,800 locations in the United States and Canada, said in a statement Monday. "Panera respects the rights of gun owners, but asks our customers to help preserve

This morning, New York Times reporter Kim Severson spiced up her obituary for Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy by tagging him "a symbol of intolerance" who presided over a "restaurant chain [seen by some] as a symbol of hate." Here´s the relevant excerpt (emphasis mine): When he introduced himself, S. Truett Cathy often played down his job. “I cook chicken for a living,” he would say. And on the surface, that was true. Mr. Cathy, who died on Monday at 93, was by all appearances a humble Christian man from Georgia with little education who sold a simple sandwich: a

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with

Churchill came under intense scrutiny and was fired by the University of Colorado at Boulder. What concerned Kelly most in the first part of the interview was that “little Eichmanns” comment, the argument being that Eichmann played a role in horrible atrocities even though he didn’t directly carry out the Final Solution, which he views as similar to the financial

Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
