AMERICAN CANYON -- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck 3 miles northwest of American Canyon (Napa County) at 3:20 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was felt widely throughout Northern California and had a depth of 6.7 miles, officials said. In Benicia, several miles from the epicenter, the quake was strong enough to knocked pictures off mantles. Officer Albie Esparza, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, said a "roll call" of all police stations in San Francisco was conducted shortly after the quake hit, and that "all facilities reported no damage at this time, and operations

I live in Napa and that was the most violent shake I´ve ever felt. I lived in San Rafael during Loma Prieta and this was worse. Lots of broken glass, but will have to wait for daylight to see about any other damage.

"I didn´t know what to do," said Sunshine Hamilton, adding that her "legs were shaking" from the experience. "Everybody ran outside, so I ran outside too. No one grabbed chips or anything like that."

I think her brain must have been shaking as well, but isn´t that what earthquakes do?

I just read that 2 major injuries were reported and many moderate ones. Thousands are without electricity, and there was a water main break. They reported fires and some masonry collapses. This is not a typical Sunday morning for many people.

I live in Los Angeles, but have been very earthquake-sensitive the past week, suspecting tiny quakes at every turn, and sometimes checking on usgs where I found I was usually right. I woke up at exactly 3:30 am this morning. I´m 500 miles away but it was a big one. I wonder if I felt the quake.

With Napa the epicenter, it´s worth noting that the Bay Area has changed a lot since I left San Francisco in the early 1990s. The enviros and nimbies have chased population growth out to the hinterlands, to places that were either very rural or downright backwaters when I lived there. Benecia was a nothingburger when I lived in SF, as was Fairfield, Vacaville, Vallejo - and Napa was so far out it was not considerered the Bay Area. Today it is and the highest population cities outside Silicon Valley in the Bay Area are in that area. So there will be a high impact. Let´s hope the damage is not too bad and nobody died in that big one.

I live south of San Diego proper, a few miles north of the Mex border and I, too, woke up at that time...odd. My sister lives very nearby Napa but they are fine--I´m traveling there this week and we´d hoped to go to Napa for tastings.

It´s accepted wisdom that Americans don´t hold Washington in high regard. Now, new research from political scientists at John Hopkins University shows that the feeling is mutual. (Snip) That´s what researchers Jennifer Bachner and Benjamin Ginsberg wanted to find out. They surveyed upwards of 850 Federal employees, Hill staffers, contractors, consultants, lobbyists and think tankers. While we know plenty about our elected lawmakers, we know much less about this group of Beltway insiders, who you can think of as the "policymaking community." The lobbyist — who pleaded guilty to illegally funneling $386,000 in campaign donations to lawmakers — said a representative of Visclosky’s office first approached him in 1997 and told him earmarks were “for sale” for $10,000 to $15,000 in campaign cash for Visclosky, the documents show. Foreign governments and their citizens are forbidden from contributing to U.S. elections. If a foreign government hires a lobbyist to influence the legislative or executive branches of the United States, that lobbyist must disclose his contracts and activities with the Justice Department in compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act. FARA is so strict that it applies not only to lobbyists, but to any American who works within the United States to influence our politics on behalf of a foreign interest. Break the law, and you go jail. Yet there is a loophole for foreign contributions to U.S. think tanks.
