Lauren Bacall leaves
thousands to pampered dog

Telegraph [UK], by Rob Crilly

Lauren Bacall, one of the last great actresses of cinema´s golden era, has left $10,000 (£6,000) to her pampered dog Sophie. The star, nicknamed "The Look" for her smouldering on-screen presence, died this month at the age of 89 in New York, the city where she was born and raised. Her estate documents show she left $26.6 million, split between her three children, plus a special bequest to her beloved papillon dog. That money will go to her youngest son, Sam Robards, 53, to ensure that Sophie continues to live in the manner to which she is accustomed. Neighbours frequently

Comments:
Crilly, c´mon, that´s not pampered. To those of us who think we should, um, pamper our pets, it sounds normal.

When Mr A and I had eight cats we willed the house to our vet if she would take care of the cats in their accustomed home as we would. Now that we have only two left, my son is able to care for them (and any others if I succumb to one or two from the cat window in PetSmart), along with his two. And he gets the house now.

Way to go, Betty! (Pun int.)

Pretty paltry sums from a $26 million.

I agree. Doesn´t seem excessive to me but the DM is frequently guilty of overblown or lurid headlines. I love to read it but it sometimes approaches one of those UK scandal sheets.

Adopting a dog makes YOU responsible. 10k is not "pampered" it just ensures that the dog is properly vetted. It is getting up in age and will need proper doctor´s care and that costs $$$$$.

Considering some of the vet bills I´ve been slapped with over the years, $10,000 doesn´t sound like nearly enough.

Completely agree with other posters. $10,000 will keep the pup in kibble and checkups, and that´s about it. At the age of 89, she was probably out of touch with what things cost these days. I think it´s nice that she tried to defray the costs to her son who will care for her dog, though. A gesture, and a thoughtful one.

I hope her son cares as much about her dog as she did, or the first time it coughs it will be "Doc, go ahead and put her to sleep"...

However, considering he got almost $9,000,000 from his mom, I´m guessing he will honor her wishes.

That is one lucky dog...

I think what someone does with their own earned income is totally up to them up to and including any and all household pets. That she loved her children enough to have them share and share alike, is a tribute to what a family can accomplish in terms of unity.

Depending upon the age and health of the little pup, Sophie can retire from her companion duties in style. Bless them both.

I have no problem with her leaving $10,000 to care for her dog, for which her son will provide a home.

But she could have done better than $15,000 to her maid of 15 years, I think.

A British man convicted and jailed for Islamic terrorism in 1999 has, in a lengthy and indulgent feature with Sky News, blamed violent computer games for “dehumanised” young Britons going abroad to fight for the Islamic state. The twelve minute report – which showed at regular intervals yesterday on Sky News – features a number of recorded interviews with British Muslims expressing their opinions on the reasons for the radicalisation of young muslims. One, a rapper, blames ‘injustice’ and cites Muslims in the UK who are so distrustful of the government and media they don’t even believe the political executions

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has released a video of an imam in Gaza who was filmed during a Friday sermon while brandishing a gun and saying that weapons were the Palestinian Arabs´ only means to establish a caliphate. He was arrested again, and was sentenced to complete his 10-year term in prison. In July 2013, after threatening to go on a hunger strike, he was released and deported to

Last night, David Cameron made his final appeal to Scottish voters to remain part of the Union. In a passionate speech in Aberdeen, he sought to spell out to Scots the full scale of the awful and momentous choice that faces them--whether or not to break up the country “that all of us call home”. The Prime Minister has been accused by the Yes campaign of “scaremongering”: but as he said, it is his duty to set out the true consequences of such a vote, and to explain how disastrous it would be not just for Britain, but for Scots

The announcement that he would delay his immigration initiative until after the election and his formal announcement that the United States would take military action against the Islamic State could have been coerced. Maybe Democratic leaders in Congress and a few members of the Obama team have had it. Could it be that, after President Obama briefed Democrats in Congress on the immigration plan, they balked?
