A Prominent Location to Remember
Veterans Who Were Wounded

WASHINGTON — On a patch of land in the shadow of the Capitol’s dome, a new memorial for soldiers will, for the first time here, honor the living as well as the dead. It is unusual in another way, too: It is the only monument in Washington dedicated solely to those who have been disabled in the nation’s wars. The 2.4-acre memorial honors “not only the four million who are alive today, but the millions that have gone before us and those, unfortunately, who will come after us,” said Arthur H. Wilson, who was one of the leaders in the

A single trip for Obama to play

cost taxpayers about $700,000

Taxpayers had to cough up $1,159,823 in just one month to fly President Obama to New York and Denver to raise money for Democrats and attend an LGBT event, according to documents obtained by a taxpayer watchdog group. Judicial Watch told Secrets that the Air Force just provided expense reports detailing the flight costs of Air Force One to the cities in July. The documents show that president’s July 8-9 fundraising trip to Denver cost the taxpayers $695,894.10. His July 17-18 fundraising trip to New York City cost taxpayers $463,929.40. Travel costs are typically a small portion of presidential trips.

Fallon Roasts President After Chicago

Count Jimmy Fallon as the latest person to poke fun at President Obama. The late night host railed on Obama in the wake of last week’s news that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel quashed plans to name a new $60 million high school after the president. “More bad news for the president: Chicago is reversing its plan to name a high school after President Obama because it received multiple complaints from people in the community,” said Fallon. “I guess parents were afraid their kids would spend eight years at the school and still get nothing done,” skewered the “Tonight Show” host.

WASHINGTON- The Arabs are in. Turkey is on the fence. Britain, still smarting from an earlier Iraq war, is cautiously edging toward expanded action. Even Greece wants to help - if someone would tell it how. Two weeks after he announced plans to form a "broad coalition" to fight the militant group Islamic State, President Barack Obama´s hopes for international support for actions in Iraq and Syria appear to be gelling. But it remains to be seen whether this motley global crew, whose members have widely differing goals, can hang together for a mission that Obama has acknowledged could last

An Armenian Apostolic church constructed in memory of the victims of the 20th century Armenian genocide was “rigged and dynamited” on Sunday by forces loyal to the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS), according to reports from Syria’s government news agency. The Armenian Holy Martyrs Church in Der Zor, located in the Syrian desert 280 miles northeast of Damascus, was constructed in memory of the victims of the 1916 Armenian genocide and consecrated in 1991. The site was chosen because Der Zor is believed to have housed death camps in which an estimated 150,000 to 400,000 Armenians

There was no doubt that California would be ready to “represent” at the People’s Climate March on Sunday in New York to kick off the United Nations Climate Summit. Arriving in NYC aboard the People’s Climate Train, which travelled across the country from Emeryville California, Sister Ayya Santussika, a Buddhist nun, said that climate change is a “moral issue” and affects everyone of us. “The power of coming together as people of different faiths and speaking about this as a moral issue… I think this is powerful.” Zia Grossman-Vendrillo, from El Cerrito California, told KQED News that she doesn´t have a

Rush Limbaugh apparently tips generously, which sometimes makes people who dislike him feel quite awkward. In one case, a waitress-turned-award-winning-author revealed that she felt so awkward, that she donated both of his $1,000 tips to an abortion charity. Merritt Tierce, whose debut novel Love Me Back chronicles her time at a high-end Dallas steakhouse, revealed in an interview with Dallas News that, at the time, she was also the executive director of the Texas Equal Abortion (TEA) Fund, which provides financial assistance to low-income women seeking abortions.

After clinching the Republican nomination for the Alaska Senate race, Dan Sullivan has now surged six points according to a new Public Policy Polling poll. An August poll conducted prior to the primary showed Begich leading Sullivan 43 percent to 37 percent. But now Sullivan leads 43 percent while Begich has fallen two points. Begich suffered from campaign missteps earlier this month after his campaign was forced to pull a controversial negative ad. The poll surveyed 880 likely voters from September 18th to 21st - right after Begich cast the deciding vote to defeat an amendment proposed by Sen. Jeff Sessions

Richard Halpern, owner of Zachary´s Pub in Mashpee, said the Afghan officers were at his place Friday night for several hours and left at closing at 1 a.m. Mashpee Police Chief Rodney Collins also confirmed the officers were at the strip club. "They probably spent two or three hours in there," Halpern told the Herald. The officers are in custody of U.S. immigration personnel

Today is the First Time Obama

Today is the first time President Obama has uttered the word “Khorasan” in public. Indeed, we can find no example of any White House official ever mentioning this al Qaeda cell by name in public. The group has never even been mentioned in any of the White House background briefings on the terrorist threat emanating from Syria (and there have been several such briefings). It’s quite extraordinary to see military action against a group the White House has never talked about. There is one official outside the White House who did talk about Khorasan, briefly, last week. WASHINGTON- A second fence has been erected along part of the White House grounds, pushing tourists and passersby farther away after a fence jumper got into the executive mansion. The new waist-high barricade, which closes off part of the sidewalk on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the White House, went up late Monday or early Tuesday. It is about 8 feet (2.4 meters) from the regular spike-topped fence. The barrier was erected after Iraq war veteran Omar Gonzalez, 42, allegedly scaled the 7-foot (2.1-meter) fence on Friday, ran across the White House lawn and entered the building through an open

On Tuesday, shortly after announcing to the American public that the United States was now bombing ISIS in Syria, the President of the United States flew to New York to address the United Nations – on climate change. His speech mixed high-flown sentiment with apologies for America, and pledged American sacrifice in the name of a lofty goal without evidence that such sacrifice would in any way contribute to attaining that goal. In other words, it was a typical Barack Obama whirligig. Even as American warplanes struck targets in Syria, even as regimes tottered in Jordan and Iraq and Yemen,

President Obama is supporting the Secret Service in the wake of a deeply troubling incident in which a disturbed man jumped the White House fence, sprinted across the North Lawn, and actually entered the White House Friday evening. The man, 42 year-old Omar Gonzalez, had a folding knife in his pocket and had left 800 rounds of ammunition in his car not far from the White House. Gonzalez had also drawn the attention of authorities at least twice a few weeks ago — once in Virginia, when he was found with a sniper rifle, a sawed-off shotgun, and a map with

President Barack Obama saluted a pair of United States Marines on Tuesday while holding what appeared to be a styrofoam cup in his saluting hand, a breach of military regulations that won´t win him fans among veterans and servicemen. Obama is known for drinking tea, not coffee, when he travels, especially before delivering speeches. His quasi-saluting gesture was an instant embarrassment for the White House, and not because his environmentally taboo drinkware clashed with the green-policy speech he was on his way to deliver at a UN Climate Summit. He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

Lois Lerner says she is no Jeffrey Dahmer. The former Internal Revenue Service official referenced the infamous cannibalistic serial killer as she broke her silence for the first time about last year’s IRS scandal. Lerner told the website Politico that she has been the recipient of threats and hate mail, describing how one person called her “the worst person ever in the United States.” “I just thought, ‘Boy, worse than Jeffrey Dahmer?’” Lerner quipped. Lerner, who led the tax-exempt division of the IRS, was forced out of the agency after she found herself at the center of the scandal over the agency’s targeting of conservative groups

One of them—the last—was less good, given he had gone MIA for the better part of three weeks and I had a sneaking suspicion he had a girlfriend. We hadn’t slept together, but the kisses had been the type of kisses you walk away from with shaky knees and blind hope. There was something there, and we both knew it, which is why we are attempting to hash things out over the phone at some ungodly hour.

The decision was made “with equality and inclusion in mind,” school President Michael Roth and Trustee Chairman Joshua Boger wrote in an email to students on Monday, Business Insider reported. “Our residential Greek organizations inspire loyalty, community and independence. That’s why all our students should be eligible to join them.” The school has focused on issues with Greek life ever since a woman filed a lawsuit against Wesleyan two years ago

The United States and allies launched airstrikes against Sunni militants in Syria early Tuesday, unleashing a torrent of cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs from the air and sea on the militants’ de facto capital of Raqqa and along the porous Iraq border. American fighter jets and armed Predator and Reaper drones, flying alongside warplanes from several Arab allies, struck a broad array of targets in territory controlled by the militants, known as the Islamic State. American defense officials said the targets included weapons supplies, depots, barracks and buildings the militants use for command and control. Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired

The Republican Party’s top leader in Congress is catching flak for a comment that appears to call the jobless lazy – a comment that has rekindled an old challenge for the party: appearing insensitive or uncaring toward Americans who are poor or in financial difficulty. House Speaker John Boehner was asked after a speech last week to comment on a plan for addressing poverty – promoted by a Republican colleague, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Speaker Boehner gave a response that was favorable toward Representative Ryan´s plan, but not so favorable about Americans’ work ethic.
