The growing acceptance of weed

Turning once again to what the sociologists call “coping mechanisms”: There is marijuana, and then there is alcohol. They are increasingly the civilized options. Consider alcohol. I´m not sure I consider anyone who ruins good scotch by adding soda to be "civilized."

Excellent article. Maybe this explains our President´s behavior and lack of emotion. He smoked too much pot when he was a teenager.

I think I am slowly changing my opinion from keeping drugs illegal to legalizing all drugs.

I would be willing to legalize everything with the exception that if you are caught selling drugs to a kid, automatic 20 year prison term, no exceptions.

Why this change of heart? Because of the careful consideration of new evidence. One, is that pot is much more potent than it used to be, and appears to create more brain damage earlier. And that´s a good thing!

So let´s legalize it all...it will be painful for a short period of time as us non-druggies will have to put up with those whose reason for living and excitement is taking dope--but the long term effects are wonderful. Keep juicing up the content of drugs, and let these freak shows kill themselves.

The druggies always scream about going to jail, I say, no jail! I´ll exchange their costly prison stay with a pine box.

Gene pool cleaning of the best kind. Why, in 10 years or less, most of the trash will be gone or incapacitated to a point of not harming or influencing others, and the rebuilding of societies and areas torn apart by drug use can begin.

Awesome.

With the usual fanfare and self-regard we have come to expect from the New York Times editorial board, the prestigious paper has changed its mind about pot. It now believes that the federal ban on the substance should be lifted and that the whole issue should be sent back to the states to handle. Not only did it issue a big Sunday editorial (the equivalent of a secular fatwa in my native Upper West Side of Manhattan), but it has since been flooding the zone on the issue with essays from members of the editorial board.

Eric Holder Says Mandatory Minimums

In a speech to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers today, Attorney General Eric Holder reiterated his criticism of mandatory minimum sentences, calling them "outdated and overly stringent." He also questioned the argument that mandatory minimums are necessary to encourage "cooperation": “Like anyone who served as a prosecutor in the days before sentencing guidelines existed and mandatory minimums took effect, I know from experience that defendant cooperation depends on the certainty of swift and fair punishment, not on the disproportionate length of a mandatory minimum sentence.”

The decriminalization of sex work could significantly decrease global HIV infections among female sex workers, leading to a reduction of at least a third in three countries examined by researchers, according to a new study. In a paper presented Tuesday morning at the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia, researchers who studied HIV among female sex workers in Canada, India and Kenya concluded that infections could be reduced by 33 to 46 percent in those countries.

President Obama was nowhere to be found during the beginning of a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission in Wales on Thursday. Obama was "noticeably absent" from the start of the meeting, according to a White House pool report, although U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute was in attendance.Obama was late to the Ukraine meeting because of other meetings on Afghanistan and a meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan, according to a White House official.Back at the Ukraine meeting, leaders were addressed by NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen, who urged Russia to stop the "illegal" annexation of Crimea. “We call on Russia

It is one of the world´s most famous ancient sites. And tonight it seemed Barack Obama could not resist a chance to see Stonehenge for himself - ordering his helicopter to make an unscheduled stop on his return home from the Nato summit. After flying out of Newport in south Wales, Marine One made an unannounced landing at Boscombe Down Airbase in Wiltshire. The President´s motorcade then weaved its way for 20 minutes across Salisbury Plain, to the amazement of passing drivers. Under grey skies, the President then embarked on tour of the prehistoric stone circle and henge with Heather Sebire, the curator

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Five commandos who survived the Benghazi attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, made the allegation in a new book, accusing the CIA station chief of delaying a rescue mission. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

Bush´s associates aren´t actively contacting potential supporters, the Journal reports, but they are answering inquiries from fundraisers and strategists

LAS VEGAS — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the U.S. should become what she called the world’s 21st-century clean energy superpower, during remarks resembling both a campaign speech and a call to action at the annual National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. Clinton cast the threat of global climate change as real, and “the most consequential, urgent, sweeping collection of challenges” faced by the nation and the world. “The data is unforgiving,” the former New York senator and first lady said to a standing room crowd of more than 800 people at a Las Vegas

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, called for a progressive estate tax on multi-millionaires and billionaires during a speech on Saturday. “A nation will not survive morally or economically when so few have so much while so many have so little,” Mr. Sanders said at the Vermont AFL-CIO annual convention. “We need a tax system which asks the billionaire class to pay its fair share of taxes and which reduces the obscene degree of wealth inequality in America,” said Mr. Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats. According to Mr. Sanders, taxing the top .25 percent of wealthiest Americans is the fairest

There is reportedly better than a 50-50 chance that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush will run for president. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Bush´s inner circle of "advisers have been quietly spreading the word that they should avoid committing to other possible presidential candidates until he decides on his own course after the November election" and have been actively dismissing "speculation that the former Florida governor has ruled out a 2016 run." Jim Nicholson, "a Bush supporter who served in President George W. Bush´s cabinet," told the outlet: "I think the chances are better than 50-50
