The jihadists who savagely took the life of an American journalist sent his employer an e-mail a week earlier threatening the execution. “We received an email from the captors on Wednesday night of last week stating their intention to execute Jim,” Philip Balboni, the founder of the online news service site Global Post, told WCVB Boston. “The email was full of rage.” The White House knew about the threat against Foley’s life and did not engage in negotiations with the terrorists, Balbonio said. Comments:
With 0bama going on vacation, there was no way to plead Foley´s case for help in release or rescue mission. Our Black Joker is losing his ability to negotiate, even with his terrorist buddies that gave US Bowe Bergdahl, an Army deserter for five of their worst leaders being freed. Where are they now, Mr. pResident?

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has been going on August ice cream runs, speaking with reporters and getting ready to schmooze with conservative activists in New Hampshire this weekend. Oh, and he also got booked on two felony counts. Five days after a grand jury indicted him, Perry is going about business as usual -- and his stock in the Republican Party has seemingly risen. Early signs suggest that Perry´s political career won´t be sunk by simultaneous campaign and courtroom tracks as he weighs another presidential bid -- that, in fact, the dual process might actually give his primary season prospects a boost. Unless, of course, he was actually

Switzerland has long had a permissive law on assisted suicide, and a new study has found an increase in the number of people from other countries traveling to Switzerland to end their lives under the auspices of right-to-die organizations. The study, published in The Journal of Medical Ethics, looked at assisted suicides in Zurich, where Dignitas, the most prominent right-to-die organization, is based. The researchers found that 611 people from 31 countries had committed assisted suicide from 2008 to 2012. Since 2009, the number of those arriving from other countries for help with suicide has increased steadily, to 172 in 2012.

If there’s one thing that has epitomized the relationship between the White House and the Republican-controlled House over the past three and a half years, it has been the extent to which showdown politics has become a regular part of governing in Washington. Less than six months after the GOP took control of the lower chamber of Congress, Washington was gripped by a showdown over the budget and the extension of the debt ceiling that lasted right up until the last minute and resulted in a deal that nobody really liked, but which supposedly would never really be implemented because of the “super committee” that would solve all our

Before the murder of American James Foley was captured on video and posted online recently, the journalist once suffered “brutal punishment” because his captors believed he was planning to escape, a former fellow hostage told ABC News. “James was a bit punished for a presumed attempt to escape, but it had no real chance,” French freelance reporter Nicolas Henin told ABC News, after saying he once attempted to escape himself but was caught after wandering in the Syrian countryside for a few hours. Henin said Foley was met with “brutal punishment” inspired both by his captor’s suspicions and, as Henin put it, “the American war

When I bodysurfed with my three brothers as a kid, I didn’t hate wiping out as much as I hated my brothers’ laughing at me when I emerged from the wash of a big wave spluttering and gasping for air, swimsuit askew. I had a choice, I could either stop bodysurfing (and thus get left behind) or get used to getting dumped. Eventually I figured out a solution: wipe yourself out so you get used to it and don’t dread it as much. What I discovered after a few self-imposed poundings was that if you can find the sand, you can find the air; it’s in the exact opposite direction. And the wave is always happy to introduce you to the sand.

President Obama returned to his vacation home at Martha’s Vineyard after briefly interrupting his vacation for two days of meetings in Washington, D.C. Obama met with his economic team Tuesday before leaving the White House at 4:22 pm to return to his vacation home. He did not react to the news that broke later that evening about an ISIS video that showed the beheading of American journalist James Wright Foley. The National Security Council reacted, however, in a statement provided by spokesperson Caitlin Hayden. “We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by ISIL,” Hayden said.

In July, after Germany trounced Brazil 7–1 in the semifinal match of the World Cup—including a first-half stretch in which the Brazilian soccer squad gave up an astonishing five goals in 19 minutes—a sports commentator wrote: “This was not a team losing. It was a dream dying.” These words could equally describe what has become of Barack Obama’s foreign policy since his second inauguration. The president, according to the infatuated view of his political aides and media flatterers, was supposed to be playing o jogo bonito, the beautiful game—ending wars, pressing resets, pursuing pivots, and restoring America’s good name abroad.

From nearly 1,000 miles away, several Redskins players used the Monday Night Football stage to draw attention to the situation that has been unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri by running onto FedExField with their hands up in the air. Ferguson is where unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer on Aug. 9. Witnesses have said he was not aggressive toward the officer and had his hands raised above his head before he was shot. As a result, the words “hands up, don’t shoot” have become a rallying cry of protesters, both in Ferguson and online.
