The National Hurricane Center is tracking two low pressure systems in the central Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 19) that show potential for forming a tropical depression during the next five days. "Disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity continues in association with an elongated area of low pressure that extends from the northeastern coast of South America into the central tropical Atlantic," said senior hurricane specialist Michael Brennan in a tropical weather outlook message issued by the center at 1 p.m. "Environmental conditions are forecast to be more conducive for gradual development of this system during the next few days

We are already up to "L" (Lowell) in the Pacific. They are smallish storms that head straight out to sea, however.

Seriously, #2?

Did I imagine Sandy?

I spent 20 hours cowering in a corner of my basement for nothing, apparently.

#3, by the time Sandy made landfall, it was a tropical storm. Perhaps that is what #2 is referring to.

However, having been inconvenienced by Sandy for two weeks or more, and known several families that lost their homes, I share your pain.

I´ll resist quibbling about whether some hurricane is a tropical storm, I just think it would be really nice for some ´weather´ to really sock it to Martha´s Vineyard...Right Now!!!

CBS is putting its Hillary-inspired drama "Madam Secretary" on Sunday nights next to "The Good Wife." In Friday´s New York Times, TV critic Alessandra Stanley discussed the two shows and slammed Hillary. "Hillary Rodham Clinton is the obvious inspiration, but this is Hillary with a human face," she wrote. During the Cold War, reporters would suggest a kinder, gentler Marxist regime was "communism with a human face." Stanley continued: "Téa Leoni, who has a husky voice and a loose, engaging manner, is an unusually likable beauty. As Elizabeth McCord, she has all the brains and determination of the original and none

President Obama has taken time out of his busy schedule to share with the nation a new PSA to combat sexual assault on college campuses. Obama announced the campaign during a press conference on Friday, where he cited the NFL football stars who have recently made headlines for domestic violence and child abuse. "From sports leagues to pop culture to politics, our society does not sufficiently value women. We still don´t condemn sexual assault quite like we should," he said during the conference. Vice President Joe Biden, Kerry Washington, and Jon Hamm also lent their voice. "We´ve been working on

Sophia Loren´s beauty and talent is exceeded only by her wit and wisdom – and after an 80-year journey from rags to riches, the Italian screen legend has seen it all. Born on Sept. 20, 1934, to an unwed mother from a poor family in pre-war Italy, her early life was a far cry from the movie diva she was destined to become. After barely surviving the devastation that befell her town during WWII (she still bares a scar on her chin from the bombings), Sophia tapped her real-life experiences to play a young widow struggling to save her child in

A teen was shot to death and at least 14 other people, including a 12-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The most recent shooting was a homicide that happened about 4:10 a.m. Saturday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, and the boy killed was the seventh person shot in that area in the West Garfield Park and Lawndale neighborhoods on the West Side. The 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. Police had a difficult time finding the boy because the 911 caller gave a location of Jackson Boulevard and Pulaski Road

In an exclusive interview, Sen. Oh, to be a fly on the wall backstage. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had an awkward task at the Democratic National Committee´s Women’s Leadership Forum on Friday. She had to have back-to-back-to-back public encounters with the leaders of her party, who gathered there a day after a scathing and deeply reported story suggested that Democrats are all but done with her as chairman. One by one, she introduced Vice President Biden, Hillary Clinton and President Obama. And it was essentially air-kisses all around. But the subtext was hard to miss, even as they praised her as the something amounting to the best

IRBIL -In the part of his Sept. 10 speech on confronting the Islamic State that probably drew the least attention, President Obama mentioned the need to help Christians and other minorities, expelled from cities and villages in northern Iraq, return from where they came. “We cannot allow these communities to be driven from their ancient homeland,” he said. Obama got that wrong. Christians, of whom around 120,000 have taken refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan, will not be going home even if their tormentors suddenly disappear. I spent 10 days talking with Christian refugees in Irbil, the capital of the northern autonomous region

Billionaire investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban is generous with his advice. He´s talked about the keys to the perfect pitch, what it´s like to become a billionaire (while naked), and the cookies he just can´t stop eating. He has also shared some important personal-finance advice. When we asked him what he wishes he´d known about money in his 20s, he said: That credit cards are the worst investment that you can make. That the money I save on interest by not having debt is better than any return I could possibly get by investing that money in the stock market.

When President Obama took office in 2009, congressional Democrats were euphoric. With control of the House, Senate and the White House, and high public approval for their new party standard bearer, Democrats eagerly embraced Obama and all the long-awaited policy initiatives he’d surely help them achieve. In that first month, congressional Democrats mentioned Obama during floor speeches 200 or so more times than Republicans. In the next year and a half, the parties referred to the president at similar rates, sometimes with the Republicans having more to say, other times the Democrats. One can reasonably assume that when the Democrats

Military gets ´sensitive´ under Obama

The military is growing more “sensitive” under the Obama administration, Pentagon observers say, by relaxing long-standing restrictions on soldiers’ religious and personal liberties. The efforts by the Defense Department to adapt to cultural change go beyond the moves to end the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and allow women in combat. In recent weeks, the Pentagon has backed off controversial hairstyle regulations that critics said discriminated against black women and made the phrase “so help me god” optional in the oath for airmen. Earlier this year, the military loosened its rules for soldiers who want to wear turbans or

Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Even as the administration has received congressional backing for its strategy, with the Senate voting Thursday to approve a plan to arm and train Syrian rebels, a series of military leaders have criticized the president’s approach against the Islamic State militant group. Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, who served under Obama until last year, became the latest high-profile skeptic on Thursday, telling the House Intelligence Committee

Washington - The Secret Service is coming under intense scrutiny after a man who hopped the White House fence made it all the way through the front door before being apprehended. President Barack Obama and his daughters had just departed the White House on Friday evening when an intruder scaled the north fence, darted across the lawn and into the presidential residence, where agents nabbed him. The security breach triggered a rare evacuation of much of the White House, with Secret Service officers drawing their guns as they rushed staffers and journalists out a side door.
