Liberia´s armed forces have reportedly been given orders to shoot people trying to illegally cross the border from neighbouring Sierra Leone, which was closed to stem the spread of Ebola. Soldiers stationed in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties, which border Sierra Leone, were to ´shoot on sight´ any person trying to cross the border, said deputy chief of staff, Colonel Eric Dennis, according to local newspaper the Daily Observer. The order comes after border officials reported people continued to cross the porous border illegally. Grand Cape Mount county had 35 known ´illegal entry points,´ according to immigration commander Colonel Samuel Mulbah. Illegal crossings

Comments:
Over here, we hand them free housing, free transport, free diaper service, free meals, free vaccinations, free medical care, free drivers´ licenses, free education, plus their very own leftwing lawyer. The Liberians have different ideas about these things.

Politics: Now that the indictment of Texas Gov. Rick Perry is coming up as the mother of all nothingburgers, and even Democrats are steering clear, it´s time to look at those behind this scam: George Soros-funded front groups. Friday´s news erupted with a Texas-sized gusher of political mud — Gov. Perry indicted on two felony counts of corruption and abuse of office! And it was all over his decision to defund a "public integrity office" run by a convicted drunk whose failure to resign left an office unable to straighten itself out. With the news breaking late at week´s end, the governor´s

One in 10 Venezuelan claims to be seeking information or making arrangements for leaving the country, according to data disclosed by the latest Omnibus survey conducted by research firm Datanálisis. The figure exceeds the numbers pertaining to the highest peaks of emigration from Venezuela in the last decade: after the coup of 2002 and after the presidential recall referendum in 2004. Luis Vicente León, the president of Datanálisis, explains that the survey consists of three basic questions about emigration. First, interviewees are asked if they have a family member who has left the country. Twenty-seven percent of respondents replied affirmatively. This means that

Violence continues in Ferguson, Missouri. It began on August 9 with the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager cut down by a white cop’s bullets. Peaceful demonstrations turned into looting, the local police went in with rubber bullets and tear gas, all hell broke loose and, eventually, Missouri’s governor pulled out the local police and sent in state officers instead. But the rioting only paused; it didn’t cease. [Snip] Observers might ask, “How can this be happening in an America that has elected a black president?” How can black kids still get killed by white cops and how

The White House has been cagey about why the president needs to be back in Washington for those discussions. He´s received multiple briefings on both issues while on vacation. Historians will have the rest of the century to unravel the mess that is the Barack Obama presidency. While they can explore these years of foreign policy disaster and domestic malaise at leisure, the rest of us have 29 more months to see just how awful things can get before he slides off to a lucrative retirement. But those who want to start the post-mortem on this historic presidency would do well to read Jackson Diehl’s most recent Washington Post column in which he identifies Obama’s hubris as the key element in his undoing.
