13,000 evacuate as out of
control wildfire rages near Yosemite

A wildfire burning near Yosemite National Park is threatening 500 homes, has triggered 13,000 evacuation orders and prompted the Madera County sheriff to declare a local emergency. The fast-moving Junction fire had burned 1,200 acres and was 0% contained overnight, prompting local school officials to close five campuses Tuesday. Authorities have also closed California 41 leading in and out of Yosemite National Park and have sent out an additional 2,500 phone calls warning residents they may have to leave if the fire spreads in their direction. Prayers for those affected. The drought is taking its toll.

Those who have never lived in CA need to understand that wildfire, and not earthquake, is the major danger outside of the urban areas.

Under Obama, racial hope

Six years ago, Barack Obama’s election was going to usher in a new era of racial understanding. That hasn’t happened. Few, if any, anticipated that the man whose election itself was historic would be in a constant lose-lose situation as president when it came to race. The protests and violence in Ferguson, Missouri, following the police shooting of Michael Brown have crystallized a larger sense within the African-American community, and civil rights leaders say they feel they’re a long way from Grant Park and a lot closer to “here we go again” on the Trayvon Martin shooting. “Things got somewhat

Ben Carson Battles Jesse Jackson:
Ferguson ‘Has Nothing to Do with Race’

Neurosurgeon and rising GOP star Ben Carson phoned in to Fox News Sunday (due to technical difficulties) this morning and debated Reverend Jesse Jackson over whether race was the predominant factor in the shooting death of Michael Brown and subsequent unrest in Ferguson, MO. Jackson had called Brown’s death a “state execution” and linked it to a pattern of law enforcement violence against African Americans, violence that almost always goes unpunished. Carson responded that the incarceration and violence in black communities was largely a matter of personal responsibility, not racial disparities. “If you take race out of the issue altogether

The White House press pool, with President Obama in Martha’s Vineyard to cover his every movement, seems to have had enough of their 16-day assignment. After being snubbed by the active president who didn’t show his face to reporters on Friday or Saturday, the press “pool” on Saturday turned to mockery as Obama hit the links -- again. “Subject: Travel pool report #2 - golf o´clock,” said the second press pool report issued Saturday morning. “Those of you expecting more golf...will not be disappointed. After an uneventful drive, we have arrived at the Farm Neck golf club at 10:47 a.m.

The Navy is sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Asia Pacific region amid new tensions with China over a dangerous aerial encounter between a Chinese interceptor and Navy P-8 surveillance craft. The strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson departed San Diego for the Pacific on Friday, the Navy said in an announcement of what it terms a “planned” deployment. China’s military on Saturday, meanwhile, demanded an end to all U.S. monitoring flights and called U.S. criticism of dangerous Chinese jet maneuvers false. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said in a statement that a Chinese fighter

Four men were shot dead in separate attacks early Sunday morning and at least 13 other people have been wounded during shootings since Saturday afternoon, authorities said. A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Little Village neighborhood at around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. The boy, who police said is a documented gang member, was standing on a sidewalk in the 2200 block of South Marshall Boulevard on the Southwest Side when he was approached by two males who shouted gang slogans at him and then opened fire. It’s no wonder British Prime Minister David Cameron cut his vacation short and rushed back to London: It was that darned Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary again. British media outlets and the New York Post are reporting that Bary, who rapped under the name “L Jinny,” is a suspect in the beheading of American journalist James Foley. (You can find this scum’s videos on YouTube if you’re in the mood to be nauseated.) In truth, British intelligence probably knew who he was almost immediately. The latest poll in the New Hampshire Senate race, released last week, shows Republican Scott Brown surging into a statistical tie with Dem Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. The WMUR Granite State Poll shows incumbent Shaheen leading Brown by two points, 46-44, within the polls margin of error. In July, Shaheen was leading Brown by 12 points. Shaheen, who is still fairly popular, is weighed down by Obama´s continuing unpopularity. Just 37% of voters in New Hampshire approve of his job performance. Shaheen has also been dragged down by Brown´s relentless campaigning against amnesty and the Obama Administration´s disjointed response to the

Circumstances surrounding the events of the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., on Aug. 9 continue to unfold and dominate national headlines. A family, community and country have been captivated by the events that evolve daily. The events in Ferguson are tragic on many levels. A young man lost his life, a police officer’s future hangs in the balance, and the aftermath of the shooting includes nightly protests and the looting of property, on display for the world to see. Another misfortune was the swiftness of how this unfortunate situation was hijacked and exploited by outsiders seeking to

Sometimes a round of golf is just a round of golf. And sometimes it reveals the essence of a man. President Obama’s decision to hit the links and yuk it up with pals immediately after speaking about the beheading of James Foley was no ordinary mistake. Nor was it a simple gaffe. The decision continues to cause an uproar because, like an X-ray, there is no escaping the image. It shows there is no there there. With even his media praetorian guard appalled, the golf outing is sparking a wider understanding that Obama is hollow, empty of the routine qualities Americans expect from

We wuz robbed. Admit it, you neo-cons, paleo-cons, compassionates, country clubbers and decline-to-states: right now, in a just, moral, ordered universe, Mitt Romney should be President. He was right on Iraq and Benghazi, right on healthcare, immigration, and Russia. But he was so mendaciously smeared that voters possessed the ludicrous mindset that Mitt didn’t “care about someone like me.” Feckless Republican operatives allowed data-mining splashed with voter fraud to seal the defeat. Twenty months later, numerous polls indicate significant voter remorse. This genuine sentiment has naturally provoked calls of “Run, Mitt,

At last, we know the reason why comedy writers don’t make fun of President Obama much. It turns out the man is completely unmockable. We learn this from Jim Downey, the longtime “Saturday Night Live” specialist in political japery. “If I had to describe Obama as a comedy project, I would say, ‘Degree of difficulty, 10 point 10,’” the writer says in the expanded new edition of the “SNL” oral history book, “Live from New York.” “It’s like being a rock climber looking up at a thousand-foot-high face of solid obsidian, polished and oiled,” Downey says. “There’s not a single thing to grab

We are not engaged in a religious war. This is not a confrontation between Islam and the West. To start from that premise is to place Isil (which should not be called by its presumptive title “Islamic State”) on precisely the ground it wishes to occupy. [Snip] The contest is not modern liberal democracy versus the Dark Ages. This is to impose meaning on what is, in truth, meaningless. There is nothing coherent or comprehensible at the heart of the homicidal Isil frenzy. It is just what it looks like: psychopathic nihilism. Indeed, it may be worse than counterproductive to

President Obama is still vacationing in Martha´s Vineyard as this is written. But he may have experienced a jolting encounter with a grim reality. The problem with Obama is too often there is no "there, there" with his words on foreign policy issues. Most infamously, he drew a red line Syria, warning of terrible consequences if the Assad regime used chemical weapons. Then, when the Assad regime did use chemical weapons, Obama unexpectedly deferred to Vladimir Putin to broker a deal that rendered the red line irrelevant. There is no doubt that Obama, to this point in his presidency, has been epically

Ferguson, MO - Conditions calmed this week in Ferguson after nights of sometimes violent unrest stemming from the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer. But a delicate and crucial question lingers: What happens if the grand jury now considering the case doesn’t return a charge against the officer? The fear among some local residents and officials trying to maintain peace in Ferguson is that failure to charge the officer could stoke new anger among a community profoundly mistrustful of the legal system. Many say they just hope the grand jury’s decision, whatever it is, has irrefutable facts to back it up.
